Maybe that was part of the genius of the composer - beginning the musical narration of the story with high drama (and indeed the story is filled with drama) and then contrasting it with a succeeding and less dramatic (and even sad) part of the narrative. I don't know anything about Tchaikovsky's personality but personality aside, I have no issue with these contrasting moods. Just a thought.

If the title has adagio or andante in it and the composer is Tchaikovsky, always expect a gorgeous and heart-melting melody.
How does one even come up with a melody like that of the valse? Pure genius.
Sleeping Beauty is such a masterpiece no wonder it was his favourite ballet.
