- With heavy hearts, Clearwater Marine Aquarium announced Thursday that Winter the Dolphin died at approximately 8 p.m. that night as animal care experts from around the country worked to treat her gastrointestinal abnormality. The CMA family is devastated.
During preparation for a procedure, the CMA Animal Care team observed that Winter’s behavior and vital signs were declining. The medical team tried several life-saving efforts, but she died being held by her caregivers.
“While we are heartbroken by Winter’s death, we are comforted knowing that our team did everything possible to give her the best chance at survival. We worked with specialists and marine mammal experts from around the country to provide her with the best care available. Our staff worked around the clock during this challenging time,” said Veterinarian Dr. Shelly Marquardt, DVM, CVA. “I’m honored to work alongside such dedicated and talented professionals who gave their all for Winter.”
The CMA team expresses our deepest gratitude to the thousands of people from around the world who sent caring messages for Winter. She truly inspired hope and was loved by millions of people worldwide.

So devastating. I was a kid when I first watched Dolphin Tale, and since then I always wanted to visit her. When I heard the news of Winter’s death, I was so shocked and numb. I was sad that I never got to see her in person, but I know she’s having the time of her life in heaven now…with a real tail I’m sure.

I am crying, I love winter so much and was hoping that I could get a marine biology degree and get hired at CMA and be able to work with her I am only 13 but was thinking if she lived to be 40 like Panama I would get to work with her. I got to see Winter at the Clearwater Aquarium when I was a teenager and it was seriously the coolest thing ever. Rest easy, sweet girl.
I never got to meet Winter, but I still cared for her. And I used to think she'd never die and now I know it was a stupid thought, I honestly though she'd live forever and never go...I didn't expect her to go so soon and it breaks my heart into a million pieces. I hope that the other dolphins and animals are ok without you Winter, I don't know if you and Hope were really really close or not but, I'm sure she'll miss you a lot. A long with the other dolphins. Dolphins truly are my favorite animals.

You guys gave Winter a life past two months. That in itself is amazing. I can't imagine the lessons she has taught and I know all of that will go to good use in the future. Who knows maybe we will get a Spring or Summer soon that needs your help.

We had an Atlantic spotted dolphin that stranded in 2014. After her rehab at CMA, she was transferred to Dolphin Research Center and named Summer in honor Winter and the fact she stranded in the summer, July 4th to be exact.

I cried, I loved winter so much. Dolphin tale is my favorite movie ever. Dolphins mean so so much to me and I always dreamed of going to see her but I guess ill only get to play with her in heaven someday. When I received the news I couldn't breath or move for a few seconds. I didnt want to believe it and it weighs heavy on my heart tonight. Dear winter, sweet girl I loved you and I spent so many hours watching your live camera. Rest easy
I never saw the movies nor heard about her until recently, but I know just from the comments on Facebook and UA-cam about how much she meant to so many people. She was not only an ambassador for her wild counterparts, but she was an inspiration for people with disabilities as well as wounded Veterans and people who have prosthetic limbs. RIP Winter and thank you for showing people how to never give up.
Winter was a part of my childhood; I grew up with her. I remember when Dolphin Tale came out, I watched it every night for two years and was absolutely obsessed with Winter. She was an inspiration to millions of people and has helped me through really tough times. I'm so glad that I got to meet her when I did, I just wish I could have said goodbye. She left us way too soon.

Made me cry just once again. I've been down since I heard of it. I can't get any clear thought. I'm broken. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later, but I didn't think it's likely that she would be the next dolphin to die... She changed my life and every moment I spent 'with' her is a treasure. I'm grateful for having been able to get to know her virtually. It was my wish to see her personally, but my family unfortunately didn't have the money or time to travel thousands of miles. I appreciate everything you've done, but I'm sorry that in this case she was too weak to fight on. She will still be *the* hero among the dolphins. You saved her life and she saved many human lives and inspired them to keep fighting for another day.
She's the reason I love dolphins so much. She was the spark who caused a wildfire in me. Now the spark is gone. But the fire is still burning. And it will burn forever.

No matter how tragic the death of this beloved dolphin may be remember the wonderful staff that tried there best to save her life. I first went to see winter when I was really young and I immediately feel in love with her and I hope that her legacy inspires others from all country’s. Has me reflecting on my own chihuahua of 15 years. She passed away already (7/31/21), but given the circumstance of how much life she still had as Winter did in her final days, it brought tears to my eyes.

I remember that I was on a trip to Florida and we made a stop at a hotel close by to the place winter was at, and my mom and dad told me and I remember saying that I wanted to see winter, the next day, we got every thing into the car to go back to the trip, and we made a stop and spent half if the day there, I was so happy to see winter and hope, we will all miss you 💙

I volunteered at CMA for 4 years and worked with the MM department. It was always amazing to see her every time I was there. I rarely break down/cry. However, when I found out she had passed, that's the first time I had cried in years. Knowing how far the CMA has come and that the legacy will live on to continue with the CMA mission gives me peace of mind that we will continue to inspire, educate, and continue to grow. Thanks Winter, thanks CMA for everything.:)

Winter was the inspiration of me wanting to be in marine life science. I was hoping to one day work with Winter at CMA. This was devastating to hear after visiting Winter at CMA. I went around January for my birthday and I wanted to go back last month but me and my family didn’t have time to go. I regret not pushing my family to go. I’m glad I can at least make it to the memorial this weekend, stay strong, to the staff and Hope.

I Have Never Told Anyone This, But Winter's Story Made Such An Impact On My Life, In A Way That I Don't Think Anyone can Understand....I Suffer From Severe Anxiety and Depression, I first heard about winter when the First movie Came Out....I Watched it and By the End of the Film I Was Crying....I was Crying because She Had Just Faced the Biggest struggle of her life....I Was Struggling too, With Being bullying and Harassed in elementary School, she Also got me Through middle School and Through An Emergency Surgery on April 26th 2016....I told my Mom That "One Of these days I am Going to go to CMA and Meet Winter" because she is my Inspiration to Keep moving forward no matter what Life throws at me....I Was Never Able To Meet Winter Like I Really wanted to, due to travel (Orlando to Clearwater)...so when I heard about Winter yesterday....I felt like my Dream was Just Shattered into a Million Peices....and I don't know how to cope, she meant the World to me as She did to so many others...and I hope She Is Happy and Healthy under Heavens Brightest light and Protected by The Gracious Lord, Amen
