Thank you for the info in this video. One of my favorite groups, For King & Country, uses this instrument in their live shows. I always wondered about it. Now I know!
Dude!!! For King and Country had me looking into this too! In fact i just bought one so i could play a couple of their songs! It gets here tomorrow! But they led me to it too!
Great video! Which type of harmonium would you recommend to get the sound from TheBeatles’ “We Can Work It Out”? (I believe John used a big Mannborg unit with foot pedals, but are there smaller ones which can get that sound?)
I've heard on another channel thst you're supposed to give the harmonium a pump or two before playing to ready it for playing. He does manufacture harmoniums so he must know at least a thing or two. What do you think?
I've been playing since 8 years, in my experience, you may need to pump 1 to 2(at max) times, with the knobs open, if you have an old or improperly maintained harmonium. If your harmonium is new, you probably don't need to. The reason they tell you to pump a few times is to build a bit of pressure so that when you play any key, the sound is loud and clear. Tldr:- You don't "need" to pump your harmonium. Most that can happen is no note will play if you don't pump it enough. However if you overdo the pumping, you may destroy the bellows due to excessive pressure.
How many times would you have to pump air without playing before it damages it? I sometimes fill the chamber with air and then hold a key to let it out slowly.
A question: I bought a harmonium from India and the problem is that if I play a chord on the keyboard and lifts his fingers, even if he keeps the pumping motion, the sound is immediately cut off and stops. Can I change that so the sound stays for a couple of seconds? Maybe somebody can help me.
If the sounds stops immediately when you stop pumping, I’m afraid there is not much you can do. You can try to tighten the screws more so air chambers inside will hopefully close better. Otherwise you can also try to improve the springs inside the harmonium, they give counter pressure to the airbag inside.
@@TheHarmoniumEvolution It seems like you answered a question the person did not ask. If the player keeps pumping the bellows, but lifts his fingers off the keys, then naturally the sound will stop, because the key is not opening a valve. The sound does not linger like it does on a piano when the damper pedal is used to sustain the sound when the fingers are lifted from the keys. The person who asked the question should keep his fingers on the desired keys and stop pumping the bellows, which should allow the notes to continue playing until the air supply in the bellows and the chamber is depleted.
@@garysmith394 you are exactly right 😃 I overlooked “and lift his fingers” of course if you lift the fingers from the keys, the sounds stops immediately. This is indeed normal, as you say because it’s not like a piano with a sustain pedal. My mistake indeed to have misinterpreted the question @rena gertz
Let’s hope you didn’t pump too hard and too long… it shouldn’t break right away, but you can actually break the air bag inside the harmonium. In case you have damaged the harmonium you can try to find a harmonium technician in your area that might have a look at it.. I hope it will be allright.
so helpful! Just purchased my first harmonium yesterday, so thank you for this basic information from someone who knows nothing 😅🙏
