Go Arnett go! He was a master. You can listen to his music every day and discover something new in it. I love the stuff he did with Lockjaw.

I have been pleasurably edified by all the great comments on Arnett about whom I had read and of whom I had heard very little. I can hear Ben Webster, Stanley Turrentine, Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis, Sam 'The Man' Taylor ,Johnny Griffin, Willis Jackson, and King Curtis ( when not doing R & B, Pop, Soul ) in Arnett's playing. Voila Texans!
These guys made the Tenor sound like a Tenor . The intended, traditional sound voice, if you will! They know how to communicate and how to tell a story with the avoidance of monotony and repetition. Speed appeared to be of the least importance to them; they wanted to be the best expressive musical raconteurs . They naturally succeeded beautifully.
James Carter has often demonstrated that rarely- seen ability to take up the musical cudgel almost unchallenged.

The guy in the right corner at 1.08 with the perpetual smile and Stevie Wonder moves is John Walker my Grambling Univ. classmate and excellent Trumpet player. John and Arnett Cobb both are from Texas.

Actually the biggest influence of Mr. Arnett Cobb was Joe Thomas (1909-1986), who played a very powerful tenorsax in the big band of Jimmy Lunceford from 1933 to 1947.

I totally agree with Eddie. A tone like Arnetts takes years to develop. Most of these new guys play from the neck up! There were many, many great players before Coltrane.

LIONEL Hampton one of the great musicians.
He make a great duo with Benny Goodman, together they recorded few classics of jazz.
I wonder who is the sax.....!!

that looks like thurman green on trombone right behind arnett. and at 5:48 that's mr. bill green on baritone sax; next to him is mr. charles owens on tenor sax. (they are my two master teachers on woodwinds).

Its a pity the volume is so low, the sax deserves a better sound.
