Spin Indexer Build - Part 1

  • The prices for machining equipment in New Zealand are unbelievable. Even the cheaper items from China are priced too high. In the United States a (Chinese) spin indexer will set you back around $65 ($113 NZ). But, in NZ the exact same model is $493 NZ. That is just too high, so in this video I start building a spin indexer. This is part 1 where I build the base and body.

    The spin indexer will require it's own lifting gear and radar guidance system for mounting on the mill. But no one can say say it's not well built. Very nice work.

    I'm picturing some random person breaking in your shop to steal your spin indexer 😂🤣😆 I lost my Milwaukee cordless drill the other day looked all over, I kept thinking why would some one steal my drill with all this other equipment laying around... I found it under my bench, it fell off and got kicked under the bench 🤣😂😅

    Gday, great progress so far and when it’s all done it’ll be a very handy tool to have, the prices are completely out of control there and that makes it really hard for the hobbyists on a budget, there bad enough here in Australia, im really looking forward to seeing the steady rest build, brilliant job as always mate, Cheers

    Can't help to think it would make sense to roll the dice with the many online companies that sell Chinesium equipment and ship worldwide my friend..there's even services that offer purchase Agents that are basically shipping middlemen to get you whatever you need to wherever in the world for a small fee of course but still way cheaper then those loan shark mark ups.. this actually maybe opportunity knocking as you can bring in equipment for resell to other hobbyist.. aliexpress..banggood.. US ebay..etc there's dozens available places..I'd check next door in Australia 1st..due to shipping cost..Best Wishes my friend..I'm in the US if you really need something you just can't get there perhaps I could help..Let me know..Cheers..

      That may be something to look in to. I think there is some one in NZ who does import this type of stuff as I brought a mill vise from them. But, it still cost the same as it would if I purchased it direct from China.

    Good work there. Well done. On the one hand the barrel was hard work to turn because it is very hard, on the other hand it will last a long time because it is very hard.

    I have that exact spin indexer you pictured if you need a measurement or spec of it..and yes it's only $72 shipped to my door but then another $90 for the round stock 5C collets..they offer hex, square collects..there's an adapter collet to go 5C to ER32 that's rather popular for them too..the spindle has 2 inch of lateral movement to use, to mill 2 inches of flutes I'm told..so it couldn't hurt to make the spindle as long as feasible for that added feature..

      @thehobbymachinistnz  Рік тому +1

      Thanks. I may take you up on some measurements once I get back on that project. I did try looing for a data sheet but I could only find the basic dimensions.

      @agentcovert Рік тому

      @@thehobbymachinistnz I would need an email address to simplify communication of specs if needed.. What most people are unaware of about Chinesium equipment is they are more less kits that need to be reworked, squared, milled flat, threads chased etc and are simply assembled as not to lose parts in transport vs actually working straight out the box..the spin indexer in question is 12.7 lbs and requires the base to be reworked the inner bore to be honed that alum thumb screw on top to be threaded inside its inner bore for a ball bearing and spring and cap bolt to dail the run out to acceptable tolerances and spindle to be packed in Petroleum jelly to get it within a few thou of run out..basically just a good kit to start off with..as every piece of Chinesium equipment needs to be disassembled, deburred, all hardware replaced etc..

    I've decided to bite the bullet and add a Spin Indexer to my project list for next year, but I will be cheating a bit, I only have ER32 collets, so it will be based around that. But like you, I am going to have to make a steady rest before I tackle that. 👍

    • @thehobbymachinistnz
      @thehobbymachinistnz  6 місяців тому +1

      ER32 should be fine. I brought some extra after market collets which go up to 25mm for my ER32 holder. The 25mm collet is quite a thin collet, but it has worked well.
      Can you not buy a spin indexer cheap in Thailand? I made mine because the exact same $67 spin indexer in the USA was over $500 in NZ.

    Import duties on things from Chinia should be duty free in general, 10% at max for steel and machinery. So that Chinian indexer should be 200NZD at max! I might be missing something, but I just looked at a couple of NZ tax and tariff sites to check.

    • @thehobbymachinistnz
      @thehobbymachinistnz  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for your comments. I don't think it is a tax thing. I think it is more that the market is so small here and there are not many importers for these types of items. Therefore, they double, triple or even more the price to the end user.
      I can't do much about these heavy items, apart from making them myself because the shipping from China can be $200-300 alone. But, I can save a lot of money importing smaller items like the tool holders for a quick change tool holder. I use to have a locally brought one for my lathe and the tool holders are $100 each here. That soon adds up if you need 10 tool holders. I can get the tool holders from China for $17 each, which is almost 1/6th the cost.

    I guess ill hit you with double comments. A fly cutter would be great for surface milling. Also yet another butt weld without chamfer lol I'm just joshing you. I hit you with some extra subs on my alt accounts. Good stuff I'm liking your content.

    • @thehobbymachinistnz
      @thehobbymachinistnz  Рік тому +1

      I have a fly cutter but I don't use it much as you have to turn the X axis really slow. It takes ages on large items. I will use it more once I install the power feed on mill. Thanks for the subs!!

    • @thehobbymachinistnz
      @thehobbymachinistnz  7 місяців тому

      Yes, shipping is sometimes 2 or 3 times the cost of the item when it is a heavy item. I was also looking at dividing heads, but they are too much to ship. Thanks for watching.

    on the subject of cost & asks to the perches of things. like spin indexers, we in the uk Ex Experience the same exploitation. on sail. So we Mack & sell to our self. in a home markit & often [vessel at a cheaper cost]. than the world markit I suggest you lean to do the same the product you own product. The one have just maid will be adequate in quality in my book . the suggestion is simple the markit is already. there & a penny or tow as a side income is possessable . we ues old hydridic Cylinders as the holder for the spin indexer often Found as scrap. & a useful supply. i get several out of one Hydralike Cylinder Mack & sell in batches we in the uk could export to Newzzeland if Export duty was Sufficiently low to encourage the practice . AT 50 Quid per unit . I have no hider what that is in dollar's ?

    10 holes in a 90° arc for the 1° locking pin divisions, 36 holes in the main plate for the 10° divisions.
    For 0.5° divisions you would need 20 holes in the same 90° arc with a 36 main plate.
    You might be able to use a pair of locking pins with a half diameter tip for 0.5° increments, one set in the division you need then turn clockwise until it butts against the dividing plate, you can fit the other in the next hole so that it can't turn backwards, each pin should be touching one side of the dividing plate holes.
    With your 1/2 dia pin in the 0 hole at 10° turning it clockwise gets you 10.5° turning it anti clockwise gets you 9.5° (if you turn back you would need to pin the hole before)
    If it works this post is my pattent 😉 💹.
