    Really disappointed with all the recognition Emilia Pérez is getting. Mexican and Latin American voices have been shouting that it is such a disrespectful film that took no care in their depiction of Mexico and the harm that is being caused with it to victims of violence in Mexico because of this lack of care. The director outright said they never stepped foot in the country or cared how it was depicted.
    Just awful to see our culture being exploited for some Europeans' fever dream while local victims are disregarded and local artists are not given a voice and ignored. From what I've seen, it literally sounds like a film written in google translate, it's disrespectful.

    Demi Moore, Sebastian Stan, and Tadanobu Asano's wins were the biggest highlights! They were so completely deserved -- and, in Tadanobu's case, overdue -- and I hope Moore and Stan will continue to receive nominations/wins, as award season progresses.

  • @Erasureeraser
    @Erasureeraser 16 днів тому +50

    You're telling me that Demi Moore has been in the industry for 40 years and this is the first time that she win anything? I'm scratching my head to understand how this happens, although it's nice to know that Demi wins for the right movie as The Substance is easily the best work that she has done so far and it's a breath of fresh air that the award recognises horror given how much the award shows tend to underestimate the genre

    • @DanMurrellMovies
      @DanMurrellMovies  16 днів тому +24

      Prior to her win for The Substance, she had never won an award from a major awards or critics group, other than an Independent Spirit Award as part of the ensemble for Margin Call. A few like the MTV Award, Saturn Award, People's Choice, etc.

      @@DanMurrellMovies "other than" and you mention a bunch of awards. What is a major award? GG and Oscar? But it doesn't mean the rest are nothing and she's some underrated poor woman. Like this speech sounds like. They're just trying to make people feel sorry for her and this way support more. But there are a million people out there I'd rather feel sorry for than her. This woman is well known and not only in America. She's popular. She has almost half a billion $ that she earned during her carrier. She has a life that most people here will never get. But people are ready to feel sorry that she didn't get some particular award like she's some kind of a unknown person who deserved to such but didn't get it. Please, guys. Be more real. She's not. She's already a successful, influential and very rich woman. Even without gg.

      Have you looked at her filmography? Why are people acting like she's Meril Streep and not Demi Moore? If anyone on planet earth thinks her performance this year was the best female performance they are flipping crazy. She won because they wanted to give the award to 60 something Demi Moore (in a movie about how hard it is to age as a woman in the entertainment industry) and not 25 year old Mikey Madison. But also, this is the Globes, Moore's studio shelled out more for her to win.

      @@BatAmericaRoma & BlacKKKlansman weren't game changers 😂. Roma should have Won. But let's not rewrite history. Also isn't Emilia Perez just as much a big swing as The Substance & Anora?

    • @BatAmerica
      @BatAmerica 16 днів тому +1

      @@Gavin48 I'm glad we agree, though how am I rewriting history? Roma uniquely covers class disparity by framing it through the lens of an everyday person who remains that way throughout while accurately characterizing a realistic setting. BlacKKKlansman's ending invites audience anger rather than the safe, palatable relief of changing racial attitudes over time.

    • @BatAmerica
      @BatAmerica 16 днів тому +4

      @@Gavin48 With respect, how am I rewriting history? Roma was a Spanish film that had an impact on American audiences that covered class disparity without changing the protagonist's life for the better. BlacKKKlansman's ending draws audience rage toward racial injustice instead of going for the more palletable approach of changing attitudes over time.
      I would argue that it is not because The Substance and Anora have timeless themes and are told with deep knowledge of their subject matter. In contrast, Emilia Pérez tries to tackle trans issues and crime cartels but inaccurately depicts both in an otherwise realistic setting.

    • @Gavin48
      @Gavin48 15 днів тому

      @@BatAmerica Most people sadly didn't even finish Roma when they watched it on Netflix. BlacKKKlansman is a movie people have pretty much forgotten about. It's no "Get Out". As much I don't think Green Book should have Won Best Picture. It has stuck with the general public outside of cinephiles like you and I. Sometimes you gotta look outside our cinephile bubble. Green Books win isn't even that bad when you compare it to films like CODA & EEAAO. I don't want Emilia Perez to win either. But the way people are going on like it's the Worst movie ever etc etc. Is just ridiculous. The film is in no way offensive.

It may still do well as the oscars in technical awards, but it should be getting a better push for best directer, screenplay and picture. I also beleive if the movie would have made over a billion dollars it would have got more awards consideration too, as this is rightly or wrongly taken into account. I dont beleive Avatar way of water and Top Gun Maverick would not have recevied best picture nods if they flopped (even if the movie was still the same quality).

    I haven’t seen the brutalist yet but I’m happy Adrien Brody seems to be back on top, given how he’s one of those actors whose career changed for the worse after winning an Oscar. Like Halle Berry or Cuba Gooding Jr. Most of them seem to eventually find their footing again and I’m happy that’s happening to Adrien.

      I'm from South America and I only head about the movie a couple of months ago, but mainly in social media and from actual Mexican and other Spanish-speaking content creators who were talking about the controversy the film earned in México due to all of the inaccuracies, that none of the main characters are played by actual Mexicans, the unintentional bad use of Spanish language and plenty of other criticisms

  • @paulinaortiz8902
    @paulinaortiz8902 16 днів тому +8

    You will not be as much of a hater as mexican's critics are of Emilia Pérez, since they believe the movie is a caricature of Mexico, treating lightly and with no depth the presence of cartel's and the subsequent dissapereance and violence crisis that comes with it. Done by a french director who doesnt understand the country. I have not been able to see it for myself since it has not premier in Mexico yet.

    Only two head-scratchers for me: Anora getting nothing, and Zoe Saldana winning over Arianna Grande. Which I get, but just disagree pretty firmly with. The Substance has been the fun plot line this awards season. I've heard a lot about how Demi isn't even in the movie enough to warrant an Oscar, but shes in for more than 13 minutes which is how long Anthony Hopkins is in Silence of the Lambs and on the list of Oscar complaints I've heard over the years, he doesn't come up.

    I think the discussion for Flow will be interesting. It is my personal favourite of these nominees, the storytelling is something that Hollywood is really lacking, however it’s undeniable that the animation quality is significantly less than the others. Though that’s likely just due to budget.
