Looks like there's now a second edition of the Classic Dungeon Design Guide, with a better layout. Thanks for the video; I don't RPG but the more I watch your channel the more it calls to me!
Ah that's good to know. I will check it out... the layout of this certainly needed improvement! And glad to know you are enjoying my content even if it could lead you back down the RPG road!
Thank you very much for this! I really appreciate your videos and reviews!
I like it! Thank you for the wonderful review. I especially like the first book and can see me using it for the peeps I roll with. There are some great ideas in those books from the looks of it. Cheers, Ryan
Awesome video as usual. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much!
How would you compare/contrast this series of books with the Tome of Adventure Design?
I prefer the Tome of Adventure Design by a thousand miles. It's better organized and the sequence of tables feels very "natural" if you choose to follow the flow proposed. It has two different indexes to find the table you're after and I find it easier to adapt its content to sci-fi, horror or other scenarios.
All the different Castle Oldskull books I have, always feel "oh, it's just that", despite the monstrous amount of tables.
In a strange way they feel both more focused and less focused at the same time than the Tome. They're much cheaper though, also in printed form, each one is at least half the price of the Tome.
I love these books.
Have you considered doing a play through of Agon? It’s a Greek mythology style rpg. I have it but don’t know where to start.
Have never heard of it… will look it up but not really my area of interest for gaming
I've had this book for a while. It has some good points and I've used the charts now and again for inspiration. The biggest blunder for me is the layout is really, really bad. So it's ok, but I wish there was more meat to it and that it was better organized and presented.
Yep layout is an issue…the content in the first volume at least has been of use to me despite that though
These books were originally written to be pdfs and later were printed. Physical layout wasn't a consideration.
Do you have the dd guide III? I think I’ll get all four.
I don't....
Have you ever checked "How to Host a Dungeon", it an interesting solo game about creating a dungeon during different eras.
It's not a strategy game, is more of procedural story maker.
Yep! I have done a video discussing it. :)
It’s my “indie supplements” vid
I think my comment got eaten by the link eating gremlins. I was saying that digital versions on drivethrurpg, all the Castle Oldskull books are pretty cheap and they often go on sale and for a ridiculously low price, like 1 or 2 dollars.
Thank you for the review. I got excited by the title but these books seem usless in a world with the internet.
I’m an analog gamer.
Maybe it's just me but this seems like too much material to read through just to play through a dungeon. I know you could pick and choose certain sections and tables but you would still need to become pretty familiar with it. Two Thick books on dungeon design plus another just on traps? It does sound interesting but not 3 books interesting. Maybe if it was contained in a single book I would be more inclined.
