    Most of us die twice. Once when we leave our bodies, and the second when our names are forgotten .Dave Hum has gained immortality, his music, his name (the essence of who he is) will live forever. Now he plays in the halls of Odin.

    Dave Hum came and went from this life but not before leaving some treasure. Seeing this brings joy and tears at the same time.

    ...and shortly after that, I came by, heard Dave playing, had a chat and bought his cd. (Also have a Huckleberries cd) ~ Was off next day to Japan and drove around listening to Dave's banjo. Three months later returned and was shocked to find (from one of his fellow buskers) that he'd passed away. This is a fitting tribute to him - I believe that he loved busking; to have people spontaneously get up and dance to your music (and drop coins into your cup) - what could be better? A fine banjo player. Tragic loss.

    What a wonderful video, all that loving energy around Dave. The world still grieves at your passing, a hole remains where your music once was. Thank you for sharing you spirit with us Dave. I miss you my friend. When you looked over and smiled, a tear slipped from eye.

    It has been said that the violin is the nearest instrument to the sound of a human singing. And likewise Dave Hum so now proves the banjo is the nearest sound to a human dancing. What a gift.

    What a delightful gift to humanity Dave is. I use present tense as the spirit of his music lives on.
    Though I must say the streets that were graced by his gift are probably a little quieter now and the lampposts are a bit lonely these days.
    Though his return may not have increased his coffers I'm sure the smiles and the reactions from the crowds paid dividends that most of us cannot fathom.

    this video is actually what inspired me to not just wish I could play but to actually start playing banjo, Dave Hum was an amazing artist with the banjo. I could only dream of playing as beautifully as he does, but my goal is to learn this song, so far im just learning cripple creek, I have a long ways to go.

    PRICELESS SHOW!! INSPIRED BY A GREAT MAN...I just knew about him recently . And, as far as I can see, he was so rich (in love) that he spent last years sharing it to others with his music/interpretations. And this will continue with these great videos...R.I.P. Dave.

      @PolycarpusT 10 років тому +13

      In answer to your question, I am 72, play clawhammer (just) and this vid brings tears to my eyes too. Why, I think because it touches the inner soul. to see young people dancing for the simple joy of it. instead of heading off to beat somebody up or blow somebody to bits!. More of this entertainment and the world would be a much better place, for ALL of us.

      42yo here and it does me too. One of my favourites of Dave's vids. I really enjoy seeing the people around him actually enjoying and participating with Dave...enjoying the gift of music he is sharing. Music really is a God given wonder that speaks to our soul. Like many others I see comment on his videos, certainly, he wound up my interest in banjo (sufficiently to finally kick start). RIP Dave, thanks for the gift you've left us with.

    I come back occasionally and watch this wonderful vid....Dave made everyone feel like doing this, the youth seen here (and often the wee sprite, his daughter) acted on the emotion, and I just love this,....Dave, is sorely missed,..I'm sure there is pickin' n' strummin' and spontaneous dance going on in higher places, since he left this world. Kind wishes to his family this Christmas, take joy knowing your Husband and Dad brought such joy (and music therapy) to SO many folks. Love from out west, Laurie

      cinderellalifestyle I couldn't agree more. I lived in Bournemouth in the 90'sand would often see Dave play around the town, sometimes with The Huckleberries and sometimes alone. I could never walk past and just was transfixed at what a talented man he was. I decided today to search youtube and see if I could find some Huckleberry videos. Then I learnt that Dave had sadly passed away. He gave so many people such pleasure. In a time when the World is full of such evil acts, people like Dave Hum bring back and realize that there are truly some amazing people . Rest in Peace Dave - simply you gave me such happy times.

      *****
      his grace and dignity even in passing was amazing, inspiring. And his story of suffering a health issue earlier on which affected his arms and hands then his working around that, overcoming the setbacks to keep playing music always touched me. Be sure and look to his website too; he was not only talented as a musician but also an artist and very web/tech savvy. :-)

      His style combines, Scruggs, Classic banjo and Reno... his hand position is unique and is the result of cancer that effected his hands and eventually took him...one of the great banjo players from us.

    ok great that they dance to this great man's music, but shows they never learned what dancing is - they wanna act like little britney spears, that's not decent dancing - disgusting, they should teach dancing for girls (and boys) of the old west in the schools - but again, everyone should be dancing like but nobody today respects real music or any art for that matter, so they just sit there like morons. so another great man is gone who CAN NOT be substituted... soon the world will be left with total idiots who can't dance, play real music like dave or know anything proper, just jump around like britney spears... oh, I'm under the age of 30 so don't go off on a rant, there are people who love tradition and are young... just sayin
