I'd love to hear a follow up to this video about the things that you made for the postpartum period and how they have worked out or what changes you would make!
I think I would also go back and add the layer of pink on the upper back to make it look more like a cardigan over a bra.
I think it turned out great, but you're right, it looks disconnected in the back. I think a panel to fit over the area would do the trick. Also, maybe bias tape to stabilize the slits in the under dress would lay flatter than the elastic?
It reminds me of modern Barbie dresses that don't continue the print or trim all the way around to the back.
I don’t find it to be such a problem :) it works either way, and if she wears her hair down, it’s going to cover some of her back anyways. But I guess, whatever she likes and feels comfortable with is the best option! :)
@@luciatat4084 with baby grabby hands maybe she won't have her hair down much but you are right that the back is fine
I would probably double layer the front pink fabric or put a panel of the white fabric behind the pink to make it more opaque.
For the pink back layer, I would go back to the time, where you sewed the pink on the shoulders to the white. There I would put a wider copy of the back under the pink for the front and keep it on the back. If you double layer the pink, maybe you could finish it differently.
I think you could easily go for an illusion back. Take the pattern, split it in line with where the pink cups would end on the side seam, then sew a piece of the pink to the floral then use that as one big panel. The look of layers without actually layering because trust me, breast feeding mommas get hot. Your metabolism is working harder than you realize to make milk, and when combined with the constant lifting, crouching, and pacing of caring for a little one... the less layers the better.
I could easily see this pattern as a one color shirt where the cups look like an empire waist. Very cool project for sure! Thanks for sharing!
I use a glue stick instead of sticky tape to join PDF patterns together. Once I cut out the pattern pieces I then use tape to reinforce any areas that may need it. I hope your little family of 3 are doing well and that you are getting some sleep with a newborn. Take care 🌸🐨🌸
That is a very pretty dress! I really hated not having dresses I could wear while breastfeeding. Good choice!
This turned out so beautifully! 😊 And I think the back is cute the way it is. I hope you are feeling well and have the opportunity to use this dress right now. 😊
I love this. A panel would be great. Just use pattern to cut it out with a small seam allowance. Hem the bottom if you want the "bolero look". Fold over all around and lightly press. Hand-stitch it to the seams. It may be possible to sew neck area with machine. Good luck! Let us see what you do.
Hi sunshine.
Just a little advice for you. I have bin sewing thousands of meters of knit fabrics and have a serger but never used it for knit’s.
I know it sounds strange, but the reason why is: (1) that I don’t like the bulk it creates at the seams. (Especially when the fabric is on the thinner side. 2) uses way to much thread. Not to mention. sergers are very expensive.
Instead I use the regular sewing machine. I just set it on the stretch stitch ( your machine has it as number 7) it’s the stitch that takes one forward, one back, two forward and one back. It reinforces the seam to it stretches without the thread snapping.
I give it a regular seam allowance and the seam automatically part’s so it’s ready to iron. And it leaves you with an almost invisible line where the seam is.
I teach sewing for work. I hope you give it a try and see if you like it. All the best on your new adventures. Rina.
Congratulations! Your dress turned out very cute. Don't worry about adding anything. Just make another one to have more choices.
I agree! This looks adorable and might look strange with an after thought panel added to the back. If she plans to breastfeed for many months, it would definitely be worth it to make another with the tweaks she wanted. I would have doubled up the bolero fabric over the chest to add more coverage too.
you should always stretch the elastic a little bit when sewing it to the fabric, careful not to stretch the knit fabric underneath. this helps with the elastic being visible in the hem. stretchy fabrics are a bit tricky, but you are already getting great experience with them and will master them in no time!
also thanks for showing me this pattern, i'm currently at thw 39th week and have zero nursing tops. this seems really nice and not too long to sew up :)
Lovely to see you glowing in the last stages of your pregnancy!
Amazing! I hope you've already had chance to nurse in this since baby was born💕
This was quite a bit of shock after seeing your mother's day post, haha. I hope you are enjoying all the snuggles!
It came out so cute!!! I love the fabrics you picked out! The pink is adorable.
I’ve sewn several 5 out of 4 patterns and I love them! If you want the contrasting overlay in the back in future, I’d probably go back to the pattern and slice the top off then add seam allowance to that and the rest of the back piece. For this dress, I think your idea of adding a layer of the pink in the back has merit, especially since it’s so lightweight-you might not want it to stand on its own back there. I think if you had used clear elastic, your milk access areas would have had a bit less bulk to them, but the final product is lovely! And don’t feel like you need to add anything to the back-just rock it as a design choice!
That's the comment I was looking for. The clear lingerie/bathing suit elastic goes on much flatter and less bulky and gathered. Cute design. I might not go to the trouble of adding a pink panel on the back of this dress but I would make it again and do it on the next one. I think she should make the top from the pattern for her redo of the bolero part of the top. Then she'll have something to wear with pants and skirts.
Not sure how difficult it would be to adapt from this pattern (let alone from the finished project), but it could be cool to make the dress and pink cardigan as separate items and giving the cardigan a back piece. Then they can be mixed and matched with different outfits
It turned out adorable!!! I love the fabrics you chose perfect for spring 💕
the pink fabric is so cute
Looks great,lovely fabric choices.
If you do pull apart the side seam to add in a back for the top, I would also use that time to add a second layer of the pink to the front to make the milk access points a little less visible through the “cardigan.”
Love the dress! So pretty!
cute! the clear elastic I have access to is much thinner and more flexible, so might not show as much as the stiffer elastic. probably an easy swap if you're out and about, but certainly not necessary
That's adorable! It turned out so well! But yes, add the panel in back. Right choice!
Dress is very pretty! I dont have talent to sew like that, my mom used to sew and make such nice things when I was a little girl.
The dress is so pretty
Omg that spice world ruler! I had the exact same as a kid
Love this! Great job!
I think instead of the elastic, a overlay flap something would have been much better. Idk how to explain it properly in sewing terms, but like how men's underwears are.
And yes you need the pink on the back.
I personally feel like any front button dress (or hook, or wrap, any front opening) with some cosy cardigan will be more versatile
It's so pretty ❤
Lovely! Absolutely Lovely
Lovely! ❤
It's super cute!!
Stunning❤
I'm 29 weeks in my pregnancy and it's so awesome that you are as well and I get to see some maternity dresses getting made! Thank you 😆
I guess I really like watching you because I have no intentions of having children and I got burned out on sewing years ago.
Maybe detach the pink pieces from the dress and add a back section so that you can use the pink bolero on other dresses if you wanted?
I think it’s pretty the way it is.
This is a pretty dress❤
Very cute
Its unique without the pink on the back..
Even just a strip of pink across the back could be cute. Regardless, I love the dress.
😮❤
pretty dress 🩷
you look so beautiful
Your decision to breastfeed is one of the best decisions a mother can make in her own entire life, even though you will be tired and feel like a cow for a while, but everything passes and you will be fine. Try to lay down when your baby is napping, even if you do not fall asleep and let other people help you with tasks even if they do not do them right. Your most important task is to eat well, to be healthy for your baby, and to nurture him. Everything else can wait. It is the greatest privilege and blessing to be able to nurture your child in this way and many women are being still indoctrinated not to realize it. You are very blessed, and you know it! Congratulations!
Obviously I have nothing to do with your life however as a viewer of channel for over 7-10 yrs I am disappointed that is all about baby and pregnancy. As someone who doesn’t want children and doesn’t even like them very much, I don’t want to see pregnancy stuff constantly. Yes it’s not mandatory to watch, and definitely I don’t but I regret it nonetheless but I enjoyed the content before pregnancy
Love the dress!
She had addressed that her channels will not be child focused. I feel like the last few videos, although had a thread of her child/pregnancy still had a core theme of decorating and sewing. I'm also childfree, and generally avoid family based channels. This video was mostly the process of her sewing a dress but not really focused on motherhood. I'm not into renaissance fairs, but I still enjoy watching her sew those types of garments for the process; same theory applies here. She is also a mother now, which is a huge part of her life so we will hear about it from time to time.
@@ldg44 I agree! And I would like to add that these are pre-recorded videos for her maternity leave which means that in the short amount of few months she had to make more videos than usually so naturally the topics are about what is currently happening in her life and preparing for the near future. I can imagine it's quite difficult to come up with different kinds of ideas that would suite all her viewers.
I don’t think she’s focusing only on baby and pregnancy. I completely agree with another comment in here that a sewing video can be about sewing many things but it’s a sewing video. If anything I really admire how she’s really mixed it up
Its interesting to see how pattern adaptations work.
