- Along with Johnny O'Keefe, Alan Dale was one of the original pioneers of Aussie rock 'n' roll back in the mid-late 50s, who's career achievements need to be motre publicly acknowledged. Alan had started out in 1951 as a big band singer until he saw Bill Haley performing Rock Around the Cark. It wasn't long before he formed Australia's first Rock & Roll band The Houserockers, and started the very first rock 'n' roll dance in Sydney with his band on Thursday February 7th 1957 at the Maroubra Memorial Hall. His popularity surged with the dances jam packed every week & they helped to launch the career of old friend O'Keefe's at the same time.
Record companies were reticent to sign young rockers initially, until Festival eventually signed Alan's main rival JO'K, then Col Joye & Dig Richards, all with much success. So EMI jumped on the bandwagon, signing Alan to their Columbia label & this song "Crackin' Up", was his first record, reaching the Sydney Top 40 in August 1959. Alan released several more singles over the next few years for EMI & Teen Records beore moving into cabaret & TV performances, while falling back on his roots to book & promote artists who performed at Sydney's most popular clubs.
He also created, produced, and promoted the hugely popular “Johnny O'Keefe Memorial Concert Show” in 1987, in tribute to his friend & which featured Dale's fellow vintage rockers like Lonnie Lee, Vikki Forest, Barry Stanton, Warren Williams, Bryan Davies, Del Juliana, Roland Storm & himself which toured nationally for more than 25 years,
In more recent years Alan Dale has not been well, but he still made the occasional appearance. However he died this week, sadly in much pain on Wednesday 6th September at the age of 88..ironically the day before the anniversary of JO'Ks untimely passing 43 years ago.
RIP Alan Dale. Now Sleeping Peacefully..and Pain free
