As a tourist in San Francisco, I would never recommend renting a car. As a matter of fact, even if I was given free rental on a car while staying in San Francisco I would not even take it.
I used to drive a lot to have a good time in San Francisco as I was only living a few hours away. When in San Francisco, I never use my car except to come back home. Due my ignorance I’ve only discovered this past few years that Amtrak will take me to San Francisco and it’s cheaper and I could just relax on my way there.
We were told by our hotel not to bother getting a car while we are in SF, a lot of cars are being stolen or the windows bashed in and the contents stolen.

That seems like the norm in San Francisco nowadays. But even if that’s not the case I wouldn’t need a car anyway when in San Francisco. There’s always taxis and Uber but public transportation and walking are by far the best form of transportation in San Francisco.

How about AIRBNB for solo woman traveler? is it safe? can you recommend some if you would know, Thanks so much
We didn't stay in an airbnb during our time in San Francisco but they are available but can often work out more expensive than budget hotels, especially for solo travellers.
