How I Concept Map and Take Zettlekasten Notes in Obsidian MD (University Note Taking Example)
The ultimate tool for concept mapping notes visually... (University Note Taking Example)
If you have any other video suggestions or tips, feel free to let me know!
In this video, I'll be sharing an example of how I concept mapped one of my university courses in obsidian. With the program's note connectivity and graph view, it acts as a perfect tool for seeing the bigger picture ideas and connections. If you want more example videos on how I take notes, let me know :D

Your video quality is freaking good. Keep up the nice work !
Tyty, appreciate the kind words, and will try to :)
Great vibe on these videos, nice work.
Thank you :))
very nice, thanks
jamming with the fukashigi no carte bg music
how do you do the status, tags and links part of the notes
Do you just use nodes or do you create folders and add nodes to specific folders? also another question, in this example, is the COGS 110 online course example your main note, almost acting as a homepage for all this information? I suppose if that is you wouldn't really need folders and just rely on the hierarchal system developed.
Thanks :)
nodes and yes it essentially id the homepage, i dont use folders for organizing concept notes :)
@@itsjohnmavrick I see, so if I understand correctly, you would have the COGS 110 online course node as the homepage for all related information, but you would also have another node acting as a homepage for completely different information, say on philosophy for example. Sorry if it is something you have already explained in one of your videos, just trying to understand and adapt my structure :) Thank you
Do you keep a single vault for academic and personal journalling,Habits etc?
Yes, everything is stored in one vault! To differentiate between everything I just use folders/MOCs, and IMO just having everything in one place has been more useful than if I were to have multiple vaults.
God bless you mightily John Mavrick, what is the name of the program to the right of obsidian?
gyazo?
Is there a way to have notes automatically move to different folders after a set amount of time, I have a projects folder and I want the projects to move into an Archive folder as soon as I've completed it or the due date has passed.
Not to my knowledge, what I use instead is just dataview queries to display my project notes, which are differentiated by the status tag of it (ex. #finished, etc)
dude u make me interested in cognitive science
cognitive science is pretty interesting, was debating on minoring in it :o what about it do you find interesting?
can you write something with your hand, like a s pen in obsidian?
Yes using the excalidraw community plugin you can embed drawings and the like :)
do you know any other usefull softwars for university?
for time management i use google calendar, toggl track, Todoist, and brain focus
@@itsjohnmavrick Thanks appreciate it. Btw do you play video games while studying in university? And are you the type of student to do extra work? I am in my second year in university and my biggest issue with studying is doing extra work. For example, for my programming course I take note of the lecture, create a summary of my notes, create anki question, read the chapter, take notes of the chapter and do the chapter questions. I find my method a waste of time and I want to know about other people study strategies.
@@baldassare5426 What makes you think it's a waste of time? Have you tried other methods to see if they're as effective with less work? I personally like to stay up to date with assignments, but definitely am not doing as much as I could with studying and just do the bare minimum. As for playing games, I barely played any during the first semester, but had a relapse and played a lot near finals and during my break. I think extra work is good to do, as long as you attend to other aspects of your life and keep it sustainable for the long-term
Which theme are you using ?
Looks like Cybertron. I'm using that one as well :D
@@schalomforever Yup, cybertron but with a translucent window :D
I actually am interested in the notes you made about COGS. Anyway I can get them? Would be willing to pay a fee if that's alright.
LMAO you don't need to pay for them, as soon as I manage to upload my vault online I'll send them to you :)
@@itsjohnmavrick Will wait for them, buddy! Thank you so much. Least I can do is buy/tip you a coffee :)
@@juliuscortes7595 ransurf.github.io/quartz/COGS-110-Course-Outline/#:~:text=cogs%20110%20outline
It's a bit slow because of the amount of notes I have though , and the titles are kind of wack :/ Let me know if that works for you though!
@@itsjohnmavrick This is awesome! Yup, it works. I have already bookmarked it and can't wait to dive deeper. Seems a little bit slow but I think I can manage. Thanks, John! :)
@@juliuscortes7595 Enjoy exploring my notes and thanks for the generous tip :D my notes aren't completely up to date, but I try to update it every few weeks or month. If you want to learn more, I would recommend you look into the coursera course "learn how to learn" or the books "make it stick" or "a mind for numbers" if you want to use it for studying, as well as the book "how to decide" if you want to improve your decision-making :)
