- The Bagnall 2-6-2 loses a cross-head bearing plate. The crew replace the missing plate with a piece of wood roughly cut to size at the track-side, then wire it into place. This temporary repair allows the loco to continue the day's schedule. The mechanically unfit loco heroically struggles up the Wallah Gorge spiral towards Tiger Camp accompanied by much slipping despite crew members sitting on the buffer beam liberally sanding the rails. The vertical slack in the piston rod caused by the wooden cross head guide bearing, dislodges the piston rod packing on the right side. This results in severe blowing of steam and very little power in the right hand cylinder. Despite this, the Bagnall makes it nearly to the top of the spiral unaided. Congratulations to the crew for not giving up the struggle.

Absolutely superb set of 4 videos: excellent definition and sound, and NO distracting commentary or music - thank you for that! This railway, and its methods of operation, reminds me very much of the Romanian forestry and industrial railways that I have had the opportunity to live and work with (what is left of them) in recent years. For me these videos show the true essence of the working industrial narrow gauge steam railway - we are lucky that a few at least remain.....
Watching the efforts of the very sick (but otherwise very handsome) Bagnall, struggling up the Wallah Gorge spiral, had me on the edge of my seat willing it onwards! Thank you so much for sharing!!

Gorgeous scenery, lots of old mining stuff to add interest, beautiful engines, great videophotography, real drama in part 4, no distracting tourist commentary--- a real railfan masterpiece.
[edit] It was sad to see the terrible condition of the tracks, but of course I understand that to repair the infrastructure would be an enormously expensive project that would no longer make economic sense.

Great track / spiral
Wow - you must have all felt a bit gloomy when the bearing plate failed! Re. sand, what a lot of folk don't realise is that sand actually increases the friction (it's meant to) but that means the train seems heavier and harder to pull. So I knew a driver who used sand only as a very last emergency measure - and it worked.
It is an old transportation system and with various technical problems, but still working and serving that our brothers from

Incredible to see the steam trains running. Some of those grades were quite steep it looks like to slow it down u let out steam
this reminds me of my days on the farm when we would use bailing wire to fix stuff :)

Thats what happens with lack of maintenance ,as for the two guys sanding the rails a simple funnel and pipe system would fix the sand rail problem. For grip
This last part was somewhat painfull to watch, as they tried to squeeze the last bit of life out of an already sick steam locomotive.
The piston rod gland failing was a direct result of loosing that crosshead bearing, the wood still allowing up and down movement of the crosshead, combined with hard work and violent wheelslip made that wood rapidly wear off and thus increasing that up and down movement made the gland fail.
It can all be repaired, but when there is no commercial running anymore and only a group of visitors once or twice a year there is no real encouragement for them to do proper repairs.

Silly question I expect you will think, why didn't they uncouple 1 or 2 of the wagons and let the office at the base know they were there. Much like in pt3. when the lorry met the Wickham trolley head on, near enough in the same place or was that staged? Really loved all 4 parts of this video.
The reason they did not uncouple was the challenge of climbing the spiral so we could video and photo the action. The slipping was not staged (just a sick loco) but the run itself was just for our benefit. If this had been a commercial run I expect uncoupling would have been the answer. Thank-you for your reply and kindness in putting up with my stupid questions. I always look forward to your videos - they make a refreshing change from just looking at some boring, - (for me) - film on ones in the UK or US which I don't even bother to view. I eagerly await your next selection.

Was any of this track way laid by WW II POW's of the Japanese? Great video by the way.
The Burma Mines Railway was built in the early part of the 20th centuary long before WW11. Because of the Japanese occupation of Burma, the allies bombed the mining facilites at Namtu during the war.

Poor old engine...worn out 50 years ago and abused to death by these idiots.
Not idiots but dedicated railway workers determined that visitors from overseas could experience their locos working. All finished now so we were lucky to experience the very end. Do not abuse hard working people.
