The access point is connected to the switch not directly to my laptop.. You can do that too.. Just connect the AP directly to your laptop and then make the changes.. After that connect your AP to your network..

If you are connected to your network via laptop wifi the first make sure which IP address is assigned to your laptop.
Go to WiFi properties and add both the ip addresses I mean the assigned ip and the ip which your are using to communicate with your AP.. You will easily be able to communicate with your own network and with AP.
