My mom barricades the hotel room door with heavy furniture before we sleep. Not the best idea if there's a fire and you need to escape though, so there's risk either way.
Get a door stopper. They make it impossible to open the door. They’re made for this exact thing and it would be better in a fire if you need to get our quickly.

She looked and saw the 'pick' but originally wasn't sure what it was for until she saw it trying to turn the lock.
I use to work at a kind of shady motel that didn't have security guards, just security cameras. My boss said it was just too expensive to get even 1 security guard to walk 24/7, let alone one on every floor, because we were a small hotel. We just couldn't afford it. So when I worked the night shift I had to walk the halls and watch the cameras as "security", even though it wasn't technically my job cause I was front desk. We did have an on call security guard though, which you could call from another building next door if an emergency happened, but it wasn't his job to walk the hotel because he had his own building to worry about. Eventually I quit because it was just too scetchy and too much work for what I was getting paid. Sadly, saving money is more important to businesses.

For some reason a lot Las Vegas hotels hotels don’t have that extra bolt on the doors anymore. I wouldn’t call myself extremely paranoid but without the bolt I don’t feel safe. I brought my police lock with me to one hotel in Vegas that didn’t have the extra bolt and some hotel staff member just randomly tries to open my door 30 mins after I check in. If you still feel unsafe simply use your deadbolt if you have one, our keys can't unlock that only you can! Also if your room doesn't have a key card the chain works nicely or even a chair behind the door scares us into thinking a person is behind the door. 😊
