Agree with these ideas. Sadly my mom had dementia and in her last few years was at home looking out the window and sad. She was a very active person until 88 when she had small strokes and a few bad falls. I find at 65 a lot of ageism in general among younger people. I am in an area with a lot of retirees and we are very active. It’s important to find your tribe and get out of the house and do things with others.

My motto is: DON’T STOP MOVING!!!
I’m 71 years old and jump rope several times a week… it’s good for cardiovascular health. When I go to my daughter’s house I jump on the trampoline with my great granddaughter… so much FUN🎈. I dance several times a week, walk daily, do stretches several times a day.
I seldom sit and just watch television… if I’m sitting I’m doing hand sewing or reading. I read to learn. I frequently travel alone, with family or friends.

Well done. Great advice. I don't jump rope but do other forms of exercise and like you quoted we need to keep learning.

60 is the New 40 and 80 the New 60. Yes! The number of people I know Who are working in their 70s, and some even in their 80s. Health IS wealth.

This is wonderful advice. I can't seem to make it on the live chat but maybe next week. Keep pushing back on ageism.

After losing my husband ten months ago I have surprised myself how I can do the things that he did for the last 48 years. I have no choice, but it is possible and at 73 I intend to live at least another 20 years independently as my mother did. (She went to sleep one night and did not wake up - no physical illness, just a little memory loss) ❤️

So very true. Unfortunately, some older ladies live this misconception. I was told by a lady in her seventies that I'll be using a walker and not be able to exercise. The ladies group in my town do knitting while the other one spends 2 hours sitting and chatting over a couple of tea.
I refuse to join, I am 67 and continue to garden and exercise.

Suzette - what makes you see knitters as people who don't garden or exercise? I am a knitter and am able and willing to do many other activities. Especially when you knit with others. I've made many friends this way, which sure helped when I moved from one part of the country to another. Anyway, if I were in your neighborhood , I'd like to learn some gardening tips from you and would offer you a knitting lesson. It would expand us both.

Good for you Suzette! You Will not be using a Walker! Why do some people have to be so dreary. L.

@@christophermunford7540We're wearing my mum's knitted creations, twelve each to 'see us out' which she made for us during her 90s. I sew and craft things, but my dishcloth knitted with string at Infants school was a non starter. Years ago I often visited a gentleman who dyed and spun his own wool, the colours all from natural resources. A relative made his own nets for catching rabbits, as did fishermen. I have a spinning wheel which I purchased for possible spare moments, unused so far as I've been busy building, digging and splitting logs for the fire. Housework is good exercise, maybe I should do some!😊

@christophermunford7540 hello, I didn't mean all knitters do not garden or exercise but these groups in my town are not at all active. Sorry, but knitting isn't for me.

I want to add that many of the things identified in the video also apply to younger people. However, many people, including those over , only recognize this as becoming older. Society no longer views comments on the color of one's skin, weight, or disability (to name a few) as acceptable, but identifying age is O.K. Discrimination. Yes, push back, but we need to be vocal! It is not just about finding our "tribe" and sticking with them. Many of the afflictions that are identified as aging also strike younger people - including dementia. I hope we will not add "complacency" to the list of identifiers/ stigmas for growing older.

Ann. It would certainly keep them on their toes. But IMO the grandparents do need to make sure they are not being taken advantage of.
