S.B. John. Sunny Benjamin John, who is popularly known as S.B. John, was born in 1934. He spend most of his life in Karachi, Pakistan.
Accompanied with his wife and two sons namely Robin and Glenn John, S.B. John used to sing gospel on Christmas Eve, on Pakistani television.
Prominent singers like S.B. John who perform it best could still be heard joyously stretching and bending notes, breaking syllables and bouncing phrases back and forth.
S.B. John started singing on Radio Pakistan Karachi as an A category artist. Side by side he also made his presence felt in various functions and stage shows held in Karachi.
S.B. John also sang Janab Rana Akbar Aabadi Sahabs ghazal, Uray hoash us dar pay janay say pehlay. Sohail Rana composed this ghazal at EMI Pakistan.
Around 1973, S.B. John introduced his son, Robin John, to Sohail Rana and said that he wishes to get his son a keyboard. Since young Robin remembered all his fathers songs. Robin was seven or eight years of age at the time.
Fifteen years later, S.B. John again brought Robin to Sohail Rana. By that time Robin had grown up as a talented singer. Hence, Sohail Rana utilized Robins singing talents in Pakistani television shows, and also in private songs and the film recordings.
Additionally, Robin also toured UAE, Turkey and USA with Sohail Rana and participated in the musical programs.
Nowadays, Robin lives in USA. Hopefully, his parents will join him soon.
Presumably, it never occurred to S.B. John that his name will become synonymous with the song
Tu jo naheen hai to kuchh bhee naheen hai, ye mana keh mehfil jawan hai haseen, the 1959 film Sawera, Music composer, Master Manzoor Hussain, lyrics, Fayyaz Hashmi, pictured on Kamal, Shamim Ara- Kamal played the lead.
Forty-seven-years down the line, this song is as much in demand as if it were recorded yesterday. Alas! To this day, no one could come up with the explanation as to what is so special about this song.
But we dont need a logical explanation. Some things should remain mysterious. The wistful magic of S.B. John is, indeed, one of them.
I wish music was a compulsory subject at schools. Had it been so , Pakistan would have been a happy and tolerant nation

I used to listen Radio Pakistan in 1973 late nite,on transistor, in the tanhai of my first Rural posting- then I heard him first time. His voice is so haunting that this song cz of its lyrics also,is deeply planted in my heart & mind.ty for this precious video

I listened this ghazal by radio Pakistan when in1960s farmaishi programmes broadcasting by pakistan I was under graduate. So many times that time.

I used to wonder that myself, till I read somewhere that great Christian singers like SB John, Irene Parveen ,Saleem Raza and others were intentionally not given an opportunity to professionally thrive in Pakistan.
@@malika8309 I beg to differ with you Malik Saheb, Irene Parween and Salim Raza served the film industry for a long time, we are proud of them. I think the voice quality of Irene Parween was special and not suitable for every song. But I feel that S. B. John Saheb must be given chance on Television as well. He is a great singer including Salim Raza who possesses a magical voice.

His voice touches my heart. I heard him in the 70s as a child living in Tanzania over shortwave on Radio Pakistan. I looked for this song ever since and I even asked people going to Pakistan to see if they could get his cassette. Alas, the 80s came few remembered him and said I was 'old' fashioned. 90s, noone even knew who he was. Those of us who heard him, he remains in our hearts and minds.
I am grateful that this has bought so many beautiful memories of tuning to Radio Pakistan on 19m band.

I today listened to this song's rendition by Glenn. I was shocked that he even copied the melody, beat and depth but SP John is the original who cannot be beat. Old is always Gold. Irrespective, the song lives on.

This song and its singer also provide solid and tangible testimony to the fact that all minorities are accorded equal opportunity in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Those were by far the best Lollywood days when its songs, music, acting, stories, poetry and movies were often immitated by "Big Brother" but not really duplicated in letter and spirit.
Why can't Lollywood produce and come up with similar music, lyrics and movies these days in the so-called digital era of HD world?

Thanks ManSharabi, for sending me this video. Yes, i know the potential of S.B.John. He is a skilled artist. This song is still worth-listening. It's poetry is of High-Class, Master Manzoor Sahib composed exactly as required. Since, i relate to Radio Pakistan, so during my sevice, i booked the composer for many songs. Also invited S.B.John in Radio Grand Stage Shows organized on various occassions in Islambad. On 25th Dec 2008, when Syed Saleem Gillani, Ex-DG, PBC,died, S.B.John talked to me.
