Larry, I just love the idea of comparing yourself with yourself! I have had periods when I’ve been more and less frugal and now I’m all in to prepare for retirement. I find frugality creative and fulfilling. Thanks to you and Hope for all you do to educate people!❤

For Christmas, I stopped buying gifts for the kids at 18. I did buy them things like toilet paper, socks, and such after 18. They tell me they don't remember a thing I bought them, but they do remember the food, cookies, and the games we played. They don't buy for us either because it has gotten too stressful to try to find things that are useful. The grandkids got old enough that we just give them money because they like to do their own shopping now. They already get way too many gifts. Time together and laughter is what counts the most for our family. But something else I do is when we make our annual trip back home we go with a car load of things for each person that I have found through the year- the kids and grandkids think that is way better than Christmas! Loved this video.

Funny story. My daughter’s 9 year old friend came to our house to play all the time. One day she asked why our house was so small. I told her this is all we can afford. ‘Oh, she said. We had a tetherball pole in the front yard, a volleyball net in the back yard, and lots of card games and board games. We were the favorite house to play at and I was there to joy in their fun.

Those medical and home expenses are the bane of my existence 😢 it seems we get one paid and the next pops up.
This summer was $10k for a new sewer line we ended up not even needing bc our city didn't do it's job and it was all on them but since we hired the work and not the city we had to pay half ...😭

I wanted a good house, that i can manage. Financially and physically. Done. No trips, small car just what i need. And no headaches. A good life. Free activities, walk, and once a month going out with friends. I used to spend more while i was living in a big city but now, i have simple needs and no frustrations.

I appreciate that you all have included your boys into your financial conversations and decisions making. Speaking more towards the idea of making them think through a budget and develop those skills before they are on their own. My parents did the same and i felt so prepared to be independent. Im now closing in on 30 and SOOOOO many people in my age range are so behind in this aspect.

So many things I love about this video. Set a gift budget stands out to me and is something I wish we would have done thirty years ago, when we did draw our lines in the sand it was kind of funny/interesting how certain family members reacted.
I also completely agree with the hidden costs of holidays and events. You have to be real about what you will need/want to do. Sending out cards, include the cost of stamps too, work party, if you will need party clothes, that gets included. Baking to bring to work, that gets counted, I really think that is how holidays overwhelm people financially, so many little things.
    Great video as always!

I start christmas shopping in January. Almost everything I buy is on sale. If my kids like something, I will take a picture of them with the item and either look for the lowest price around, or I'll wait for a sale or coupon before I buy. Taking the picture helps me remember and helps with the instant gratification and attention span of the kids.

Knew it must be a great book if you bought a copy. I got it today in the mail. All recipes look and sound great.
I can't wait to try them.

I have started asking my older grandkids where they would like to receive gift cards from. They have to give me three, then I will get one of them, but they have no clue as to which one it will be. That helps with the surprise factor!
The little girls are getting t-shirts with decorative buttons sewn at the neckline. I may even add crocheted lace on the sleeves and hem.

Years ago, when my group of friends were working and living in the same area, it was harder sometimes NOT to compare myself (single) with couples with higher dual incomes or people who (I know) were spending more than they made. We have all scattered around the country now that we retired, but I have fun thinking of what they would think if they saw me in my torn jeans and t-shirt, shopping, while they are going on cruises, eating at fancy restaurants, or traveling to other states or countries. But, I'm a goat rancher in a very rural area, no one dresses up much in our nearest town, and I can scream bloody murder on my 10 acres, and only my Anatolian puppy will notice. I have the life I wanted, I have money for what I need (even if it takes a couple of months to save for it), and a cat, dog, chickens and goats to which I can tell all my stories to and they don't complain!

We give one nice consumable gift for each family. One year it was a package of organic bath bombs , one year it was a variety of goat milk soaps, last year was a $25 Kiva gift card. Kiva is a global charity bank that gives low interest loans to entrepreneurial people in poverty so that they can build their business to become self sustaining. The person goes online with the gift card and decides where to send their $25 to. maybe to a pig farmer maybe to buy supplies for their tiny store to sell, my favorite was for a new sewing machine so a woman could continue to support herself by sewing on a larger stronger, more industrial machine. The money is a hand up, not a handout. It is a micro loan combined with others. The person has a repayment plan and when it is all paid back. You can re lend that $25 over and over again💜💜. If everyone is pretty much broke, we just have a big potluck with lots of fun games for the kids a giant puzzle for everyone to work on one or two great Christmas movies.

Hope & Larry, what would you do? We have a small home upkeep budget. We also have a ( not fully filled) emergency budget. Little chance to refull either quickly. These recent storms proved that we have a leak. Water started coming from the middle of our livingroom ceiling! We believing it was coming from an upper window. Replacing the window along without replacing any rotted boards, etc, will take more than our jousehold repair fund. Do we use the emergency fund and then leave that fund depleted? Hubby just retired on a fixed income.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  18 годин тому

Make sure you get several estimates. The only advice we can give is that the emergency fund is meant to be used in situations like this. But, you have to figure out how to replenish it. Maybe sell some items. Near the holidays a lot of people are looking for items to buy as gifts.

It is so nice watching and hearing you talk - I really appreciate! It is funny, because I mpstly have the exact same opinions about saving money without being "that frugal" - I for example like it much more to shop my clothes or other Things I "might need"on second hand pages on the internet like vinted or here in Germany Kleinanzeigen where people can put their used Things in and sell them for very less money - so it often happens, that you get the Thing of your desire nearly brandnew, because someone did a fail buy and you then become the winner 🤓🤓👍 thanx for your videos I really enjoy watching! Bye from Germany 👋👋
