  • Two stomach cancer patients share their stories from beginning to end, including stomach removal and having to strongly advocate for themselves when their initial doctors brushed off their concerns.
00:07 Tom Smith, Co-Founder of HOPE for Stomach Cancer and Board Member, introduces patient, Jason Diaz.
01:30 Stomach cancer survivor, Jason Diaz, shares his journey, from the symptoms he experienced, to his misdiagnosis and eventual correct diagnosis, to his choice of treatments, to the removal of his stomach, to finally being deemed recovered. Mr. Diaz stresses the importance of advocating for oneself and securing a gastric specialist, which are two actions he took that saved his life, as well as taking part in clinical trials.
17:40 Tom Smith thanks Mr. Diaz and introduces Branny Carrasco
20:07 Navy veteran, Branny Carrasco, shares her stomach cancer story, from her very different symptoms and initial diagnosis to her testing positive for the known stomach cancer-causing bacteria, H. Pylori, which is prevalent in Japan and which is where she had been stationed for four years. Ms. Carrasco shares her similar experience to Mr. Diaz in regards to having to aggressively advocate for herself in the face of doctors who assured her that stomach cancer couldn't be the cause of her issues due to her being so young. Ms. Carrasco shares her recurrences of her cancer, including having Krukenberg tumors on her ovaries and being given a prognosis of having six months left to live.

I had to lie to get taken seriously too, was able to get a gastroenterologist on video call. I’m getting a colonoscopy and endoscopy in 2 months. Sometimes you have to lie to get taken seriously. Hopefully it’s a false alarm, but better safe than sorry.

I was diagnosed at 33 with stage 4B stomach cancer. I was given less than 6 months to live if I didn’t do any palliative chemo. So I did 12 rounds and it was absolutely horrid but still alive after almost 15 months. 95%chance it will become unstable once again but there is no way I’m going back on treatment. So I’m gonna enjoy everyday and whatever happens happens. ❤️

Doctors told me I was too young for heart problems at 42, 3 doctors later I finally found one that listened. He did a nuclear stress test and found I was 100% block in my right artery. I was in surgery the next day.

Have watched around a hundred videos from/on people with cancer. It is disconcerting to hear so many describe how their symptoms were ignored/misdiagnosed by their doctors and after many continued complaints over time. I believe I am in that same boat now. Though my symptoms are vague, they are getting worse. Something is wrong. These videos are helpful on a variety of levels. People are their own best patient advocates.

My gosh I can relate. Had a pain in my side, heartburn, fatigue, bloating, and off blood counts. Told multiple doctors. Something just made me keep looking for a cause. No one was listening and one dr. told me "maybe this is just how your blood is". Finally 8 months later, I am diagnosed with stomach cancer. Starting treatments in 2 weeks. Now hoping for more extensive genetic testing given I have 1 sister (breast cancer and ovarian cancer), 1 niece (breast cancer), 1 brother (bladder cancer) and myself( breast and Stomach cancer)

Luk (49 yo male) from Belgium here. Almost 1 year ago I was diagnosed with stomachcancer adenocarcenome at the stomach entrance (cardia). Gastrectomy after chemo. All seems fine at this moment. Eating doggybag the next day 😂 is necessary. I had 4 chemo sessions followed by surgery. No follow up treatment because the disection of all extracted tissues (stomach, spleen and 28 lymphs ) showed no spread. When I read up on testimonies I realise I’m very fortunate having had treatment in the finest university hospital. No fizzy drinks on heavy alcohol for me anymore. I lost 21kg of weigth. The only symptomen I had was that I had sometimes black feces and that's how I went to the GP initially.

I've been desperately trying to get Help for this 5 to 6 years. Multiple doctors say the same thing, similar Scenario As the first story. They just keep telling me They don't think it's anything. But fail to properly check. And I push for months and wait for months for tests fir them to reschedule or cancel the appointment... trying a whole new gastrointestinal practice this coming Monday and I hope they will help me. Through all this I have learned to push, But not enough

Because is all about turning over as many patients as possible. Investing takes time. Time to them is money! Healthcare companies that they work for is pressuring them to ser so many patients a day. For profit Healthcare is making Americans sick and killing them. Unfortunately, Americans are to ignorant or stupid to realize that! I am very disappointed with the average American! Most brainwashed citizen in the developed world!

We have a different system in the UK. Your primary care doctor arranges everything with doctors and hospitals. Any suspicious cancer symptoms have to be investigated within two weeks. Not perfect but better than what I’m reading here.

I suffered for close to three years before being diagnosed with bladder cancer. Three doctors passed my symptoms off as my urine cultures came back negative for UTIs and my former primary doctor lied on my health notes that my symptoms were due to anxiety even though I said I wasn't stressed but in pain. I'm doing fine after surgery and have one more year of chemo left. I just found out I'm at a 3-fold risk for gastric cancer due to an autoimmune disorder that causes anemia and B12 deficiency. Praying I don't have to face another cancer in my future.

I agree. Exaggerate your symptoms. Tell them it is like nothing you have felt before. Go to gospital er and not.urgent care or a standalone er. I just got diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. I've always struggled with heartburn had hpylor 16 years ago. Dr had not ordered an endoscopy in 10 years. Advocate for your health. Do not accept being told its heartburn or gerd.

Hispanic people have a significantly higher rate of stomach cancer, even as very young people. All children, especially Hispanic children, who have frequent stomach aches, should be screened for the H. Pylori bacterium, which is the leading cause of stomach cancer.

@AK-fk8zo a simple Google it says people of color are more likely to have stomach cancer I think it's the spicy food but I'm not sure colon cancer is more prevalent in the black community I believe it's from the soul food and seasonings and greasy foods what I find weird is that there are very few UA-cam videos made by black people with colon cancer.

A huge percentage of people with H Pylori infections have absolutely no symptoms, and no ulcers. And a low percentage of people with stomach cancer test positive for H Pylori, thus, there may be a connection, but I highly doubt the connection is causal.

How is it that you can google symptoms of cancer, have all those symptoms and then have a doctor say that cancer doesn't present like that? Where do they get their information from exactly if they're getting it so wrong?? And this idea that folks can't possibly have cancer because they are too young is just plain wrong!! I know that and I'm not a doctor! It absolutely boils my p*ss!! 🤬 How many more people will die because doctors are so uninformed?? There's just no accountability either...
