I play a similar game but designate one ball that if caught in the "swamp" it frees everyone.

Throw a couple pins on each playing side so when pins get knocked down, jail break and everyone in your swamp gets out.

This is a great game. Too bad so many school systems have outlawed dodgeball.

I play a similar game as well that I call "trenchball". Between the baselines and the walls we have about seven or eight feet of space, and that area is the "trench". Other than using that "trench", as opposed to your "swamp", everything else is the same. It's a very popular game. And in defense of dodgeball, which I've had to do with my administrators in my past, it engages more kids than any other activity we do, and it requires more skills (throwing, evading, catching) than most activities, and as long as you do a version like this, it's not an elimination game. Elimination games are problematic, but if you take games like dodgeball and make them non-elimination games, they're great. Nobody has ever been injured by a rhino skin ball yet!

To all of you saying boo dodgeball….there's a way to take it town a notch. Use gator balls and hit legs; more difficult even for the more athletic kids. Use beanbags and make them slide them toward feet…there are ways to make it "safer" since our generation is different.

Great game. I played this today with my 2nd and 3rd grade class and also with my 4th and 5th grade class. I placed the mats at different distances to allow for successful throws to the "swamp." The kids in both PE classes loved the game. We had worked on throwing and catching skills all week. The kids throw hundreds of time while playing this game and aren't even aware they are improving their skills. If I saw a student using improper throwing form he/she had to go to the swamp as well. There are a lot of strategies to this game and the students figure them out pretty quickly. Great active game to use to reinforce throwing and catching skills.

We use a bench instead of the mat for the kids to stand on.

I switched this around and did 'Shrek'ball, the idea is to get everyone into the swamp. Start with one in the swamp and if the catch a ball that player joins them.

This isn't realistic at all! The players are spread evenly! In reality there will be a large clump of girls who talk and play with their hair in the back, and a few people who actually play the game in the front.

I said this as a joke lol. I'm not being serious, in fact, I don't even remember commenting on this XD I decided to make a joke out of it because in every gym class I've been in, there's always the girls that clump together and don't do anything.

suggestion- if you are out when you throw the ball and it is caught then it discourages "poor" throwers from throwing. Those are the kids that need to be encouraged to practice throwing more. Does not have a big impact on the game itself but everyone will feel safe to throw the ball.

Good point. It’s the non-athletic ones that sit back or just collect balls and never throw them. That makes sense now why they aren’t throwing the balls.
