I have been following horse racing since 1960. I’m pretty old. I have to say that when Medina Spirit crossed the wire first in the Derby, I turned to my husband and said, “Again, he wins the derby......this man is doing something”. Four days later I turn on the TV and what’s the news story of the day.....Bafferts horse tested positive for a banned substance in the derby. BAM.... I knew it.
I been going to races when i was a kid with my mom and dad ! And i remember that horses would race till they were 11 years old or older now their all burned out at 5 or 6 years old
There is no doping scandal. The type of steroid that was put on the horse's skin is something you and I could use as well. People are truly ignorant about medications.
The corticosteroid ingredient in the medication is typically injected for painful joints. That's why it's allowed during non race periods, but not on race dates. Baffert is receiving scrutiny he deserves, because he's had a good number of positive drug tests. And it's difficult to understand why an elite trainer or his vet would not check the ingredients in the cream before use.
Lol race track vets do not carry that cream it's B's, we only inject joints with beta. Most states is 7 day withdraw Kentucky it's 14 they gamble to close, why it's the derby (arrogance) what's funny it's he's probably use something else that doesn't test! The only sport steal millions of dollars and minimal consequences , 29 positives 100s millions of dollars involved!
I give my poodle Otomax for chronic ear infections. Reduces the yeast/wax. She's no faster the day after I treat her I can Assure. 21 pico grams in a 1200 LB animal isn't doing crap. 3 horses had a chance to pass Medina in the lane and they didn't.
Its' typically used as an anti inflammatory which may be given away from races, but not close to race days. It can mask serious injuries, among other issues. It's unlikely to make anyone, including your poodle, run faster. Horses can't speak up when they are in pain. And Baffert and his vet should absolutely have known about the ingredients in that cream and they could have avoided any trouble. Baffert is getting a lot of deserved scrutiny because he over- uses meds and has been caught too many times.
@@eh3477 I have personally run horses in the Baffert barn and many other trainers. I can tell you unequivocably I nor any other owners that referred me to Bob ever suggested he used veterinary treatment to enhance a horses performance. Having said that, if Medina Spirit gets dq'd for an overage I agree it will be a just punishment. Rules are rules. However, his record is just and the man is a true. He has probably entered 15,000 or more horses in a race and people are bashing him over a small sample of violations. Its not right.
@@johnpetrig8797 Listen don't give any one the hogwash, either you deny this to protect your own dignity, you weren't wealthy enough to get the full treatment or you didn't ask any questions and weren't around in the morning. He paid cash under the table to tap those joints. I don't deny he's a better more knowledgeable trainer than most or that he actually goes into a stall and looks at the horses ( which a lot don't ) and runs his hands across a horse ( again which a lot don't or know how) but even with all that you don't get the top 5 horses or 5 out of 10 horses in training every year even with paying the large sums at auction, it's still a lottery. Plus I've been told ( source was impeccable) he was injecting ( at that time it was a synthetic drug) during a Breeder's cup, they knew it and let it go. So it's not just the times it's come up recently it's many more. Also to answer the prior post where you say " It's only 21 pico grams in a 1200 lb horse" well it's not 21 pico grams in a 1200 lb horse it's 21 pico grams in that small vial of blood.
John Petrig it's 21 ( or now 25) picograms PER ML OF BLOOD. Want to take a guess on how many milliliters of blood are in a '1200 pound animal'? I'm not saying that dosage acted as a performance enhancer on Medina Spirit, but having 21 picograms of betamethasone per ML of blood is prohibited in the KD. Baffert broke rules, once again. Enough is enough with this POS.
Kudos to the retired trainer. People who have a conscience feel guilt. He's doing something positive about it. I'm curious what bad things he did. I'm sure it's too sad to know.
Running horses into the ground until they are so lame only a kill buyer will take them. And outright seeking kill buyers because you have a horse you need to get rid of. Oh these racing people have done some disgusting things to horses. The show ring is no better. I’ve seen horses at kill auctions that came right out of the show ring. You can tell they did because the hoofs have the black polish on them and they still have braids in their mane. Many people in the horse industry for profit are ruthless to humans and animals
I don't know he done anything bad, he said he's had horse's break down, that happens to most trainer's, but he's at least trying to make amends. That's nice.
He's a local (former) trainer, that's why they used him. And what he says is absolutely right, except that others in the industry say that doping in horse racing has gone from bad to terrible.
Two people at fault here; both Baffert for not doing his homework about Otomax before using it, and also the veterinarian who prescribed it. A topical cream containing betamethasone should never be used on a competition horse that will be subject to post race testing.
