- In this episode I will disassemble all of the hardware, take off the fold up walls, windows, the door and prep the wood for paint. I'll water seal, prime and prep the wood for final paint coat. I also prep, prime and paint all of the aluminum trim. This slide-in camper is getting close to being put on the Toyota Tacoma. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions. Perhaps the best demo and design/build I've ever seen. But...the deconstruction for sealing/paint was painful to watch. I would have done all that up front as the panels were built and fitted. Touch up goofs later.

Enjoying the build. I noticed at the 13.50 minute mark that the shade cloth made a cool design on the side of the camper. One could use this to make cool graphics on the side.

Ingenious! You have solved all the problems of a truck camper. I never liked the pizza slice fabric tent models yet being able to stand up once U R parked is important but normally too bulky looking until your design came along.

I drew out a ton of different ideas until I come up with a good design I started with. and basically adjusted along the way. I didn’t know I was going to do the hard sides until I figured out how it was going to work in the real world. My fallback was typical canvas pop up. I’m still adjusting and changing things along the way…which comes with from scratch prototype type thing anyway. That’s part of the fun…though it can be frustrating at times. Awesome design work by the way I’m going to use your design to make a similar camper that will slide in the back of an M1101 military trailer and also be able to slide in the back of my pick up truck it will be a little narrow in the trailer but I’m going to make cribbing to make it so it doesn’t shift left or right an awesome design on how you attached into the back of the truck also

13:50 into the video - the shadow ... I think that should be the exterior paint scheme for this camper - a subtle reminder this was built yourself in your driveway - the shadow is kinda like a fingerprint of where this beautiful camper was born... just my 2c.

Hello, I love the video series! Excellent job!!! I have found that powder coating aluminum parts is optimal for longevity. However if you do paint them, I would suggest using wet/dry sandpaper and 2 part epoxy as the lubricant. 24 hour marine grade epoxy gives you plenty of time to work with. It is a messy process but the paint will adhere to the epoxy much better then the bare aluminum. Your design is excellent and your skills and execution of the project are top notch. Great job!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting My camper is DIY and I want to be able to touch up (rattle can) any trim that gets beat up when out camping. I agree, PC is better and stronger, it’s just no practical in my build. My build is an example of what can be done DIY with basic tools. I’m hoping my sanding, cleaning with acetone, etch primer and descent quality spray paint will do the trick. Stay safe out there. TbT
Obsessions are such a lovely thing. It's been fun following yours. Attention to detail is phenomenal. Thanks for sharing. The only thing I don't understand is as long as you're cantilevering the bed over the cab, why not extend it all the way forward? Great work.
Thanks. Haha, yes it’s cheaper than therapy lol. I tried not to have any seams on the sidewall panels so I went 8 foot to keep it as solid and watertight as possible. Also to keep it lighter, I used lighter internal framing material so a extended cant would have needed more structural strength a La more weight. We sleep north south with a slide out. It’s bigger than our Tupui rooftop tent and more comfortable. Also it’s super quiet in there compared to a tent. 💤💤💤
Coming along nicely! I am taking notes because I am hoping to build something similar within the next year or so...but with a bit of a twist. I am sure that as I get deeper into the planning process, I will be rewatching these videos and asking questions...

@@TravelingbyTacoma Yeah…this ain’t my first rodeo! I built a “convertible” teardrop 10 years ago. I wanted a teardrop, but my wife’s favorite part of camping was sleeping under the stars. So we compromised and made our teardrop a convertible. Kinda thinking along the same lines with this, but the truck will be very different and will be the key to this construction. Within the year, I hope to be in the market for the perfect truck. Then the plan will go from my head to paper, as I plan around the features of the truck.
We still camp in the teardrop and prolly always will to some extent. We’ve had it from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico and the mountains of Virginia to the Great Plains!

@@TravelingbyTacoma Thanks. The teardrop is great for what I like to call “destination camping” where we post up in one location for a few days. Now I want a “run & gun” set up. Where we do things like see how many different states that we can spend the night in during one trip! Something that we can take off to the Smokies (3-4 hours away) on Friday after work and sleep in (in a legal spot) before starting an early morning hike. That kind of thing…
Yeah sounds like us. We’re just truck campers, no major off-reading just FSR’s and desert roads for us. ✌🏻

Hey!! I just discovered your channel 2 days ago and have watched all videos to include todays. Love the build, man. I definitely want to do this myself. I have a 2013 Tacoma. What are your overall dimensions of the camper?
Cool, thanks for watching. The basic dimensions are 8’ long X 5’ wide and when it’s popped up about 6’4 height. It’s small for sure but the bed is the most important and it’s about the same size as a queen. Also, no tent fabric blowing in the wind. I’ll cover the interior soon when I get the outside done. Is the bed area big enough to sleep comfortably w two people? It seems like it wouldn't be long enough ..... No offense just curious as I really want to build a truck bed camper for my truck and I am enjoying this build so far great work
No worries. I’m 6’5. I made the bed 5’ wide by 6’4” inches long. It sleeps 2 great. We just sleep in it for 2 nights over the weekend. The bed pulls out and you sleep front to back. Hope that helps.
just watched you videos...thank you for posting and sharing...i will be also trying my hands at building ...working with a GMC Sanoma...gona flat bed it first...then basically build a slide on ...still keeping the box as an option ...flat bed as an option and then camper add on lol......( its a vision...will see how it all works out)..using aluminum ladder frames and a toneau cover for a roof pop on a slope....sheeps wpol for insulation...did you latch side walls to roof when they are DEployed??

Was wondering about this post, just now saw it after being up for 8 days😵💫. Looks like you used MDO plywood(?) then sealer, then prime and paint wow no worries about water damage. How many extra pieces do you think you will have left over when you put it back together?😄 Really doing a good meticulous job, like other commenters, anxious for your next post. Hope the crazy SoCal weather (rain) isn't slowing you down.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I used 1/4 birch on the sides regular plywood everywhere else in various thicknesses. I had really good luck with this painting process on my boat so I’m confident this will be fine for a camper. Haha yeah, so far so good. I wrote as many notes on the back of all the aluminum to help put it back together. Rain has sucked, we need it but slowing me down for sure. Stay safe out there. TbT

Hello and thanks, you too. Yes, I put a sealant on all the wood seams, sealant bead behind all of the aluminum trim and then I sealed all the edges of the trim again. Only halfway through my binge of watching your build....I have a Tacoma as well and I'm seriously considering building one as well....do you know the final weight of your camper? Just the finished shell?
It’s a commitment for sure, but a fun process. I have not weighed it yet, but if I would guess about 300-350 so far. Once I’m done with the outside I’m going to put it on my truck and weight it. (Weigh the truck empty and again with it on) so I know how I’m doing on get to the payload max which is about 1200lbs so I should be ok. Hope to be about 500lbs dry.
Yeah, Ive been waiting on an update. great job. How much space is between the 2 folding side walls when they are down?
Thanks for watching. Not very much. About 8” I think. If I was to build the camper again I’d make it about 1 foot wider overall width. It would help in a few areas. You could stand up in between the walls when folded and would slightly hang over the bed sides helping removal and install. I’ll cover that in later videos. It’s 5’3 outside to outside wide, I would have made 6’3 wide if I could do it over. No biggie though, it’ll be fine. Part of the process. Thanks for commenting. TbT

Haha. No I'm single-ish... my girlfriend owns her own house lol. You're not the first person to comment about that. I tried to avoid that, but the overspray was a bit wild that day. I'll give the old driveway a good powerwash and scrubbing this summer. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Sorry if this is in one of your videos (feel free to point me that way if it is) do you have a gas mileage comparison of with/without the camper?
I don’t think I’ve covered that in detail too much. We did a aprox 3000 mile trip this summer. Over that trip, I averaged 17.5mpg on my truck gauge/meter. Without the camper I used to get about 21mpg on avg overal. Lately around town- commute to work of 11 miles- in traffic and I drive slow lol. 65 or less always, I get about 18.5. My truck is 2wd with 32’s and like I said I drive slowly. I get 325 miles per tank usually... and from my experience my trucks tank shows empty when in reality there is about 3 gallons left so if you do the math if I drove it dry it get about 377 miles per tank or a little over 17.9 mph overall… if my math is correct lol. Proper tire pressure helps too. 60 in the back 55 front. E load rated up to 80psi. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
