- The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society presents a vintage recording of a hymn of the Esoteric Order of Dagon. More about this hymn is available in the Miskatonic University Monograph: The Curious Sea Shanty Variants of Innsmouth, Mass.
Oh mighty father from the deep, whose sacred oath we ever keep
Who brings the bounties of the sea in answer to man's solemn plea
oh grant that we may dwell one day
Forever in Y'ha-nthlei
Oh mother who with many arms enfolds and keeps us safe from harms
Who knows the waters' ebb and flow with ancient wisdom from below
oh grant that we may dwell one day
Forever in Y'ha-nthlei
Oh fearsome Deep Ones of the sea, to you we pledge our loyalty
And hear this oath we ever make, our willing flesh is yours to take
And thus we ever humbly pray
to join you in Y'ha-nthlei.
Ia!
hmmm, it has a beat and you can dance to it.
I think it's "And if this oath we ever break," not "and hear this oath we ever make"
@@Yzarro Honestly, given how the Innsmouth folk "keep the pact," I can see it being either one.
@@scaper8 Good point. *shudder*
ah...those happy sing alongs at the dark reef....
Anyone suddenly feel like converting? No, the fins on my back have nothing to do with that question.
Have you considered setting up a trade route with R’lyeh by any chance? No, the tentacles I have on my face and my octopus eyes have nothing to do with that question.
@@Godzillafan-tv1ks The problem is you guys have too many orcas in the surrounding routes. They eat the fish unless we feel like sending a small army to guard the wagons.
Kaiserhund: Would it be fine if we did a culture sharing operation with the library of Yog-Sothoth? Our records of Dagonian customs are rather thin after the Whitly incident, the orbs hovering around me and the fact that I have satyr legs have nothing to do with the question.
You guys know where a sacrificial altar is? No, my fish like appearance has nothing to do with that question
🤣
I played this and a thunderstorm warning came on the radio.
It's a strange kind of beauty;
It's cold and austere,.
And whatever it was that ye've done to be here;
It's the sum of yer hopes yer despairs and yer fears;
When the last ship sails.
Thank you for not letting the people of Innsmouth sing it, because then it would have just been a bunch of grunting and barking and gurgling.
Oh the children of the sea, hear how they sing!
That's not supposed to be sung above water, ignorants!
😂
The Young Innsmouth choir have pretty sweet voices until their gills drop.
Josie Tyner exactly. My two children by Onesiforus III Marsh are in that choir, Obed IV is the bass.
I'll put this on when Jehovah's Witnesses appear at my door!
I played this video and the ocean became choppy with white caps. A thick fog rolled in with the surf as the twilight fell, which is somewhat strange. I live in the middle of the Mohave desert.
I played this and now I smell the distinct saltiness & fishy smell of the sea. The sky is getting dark, even though it's hours til sunset and a fog is slowly creeping into the yard. I think I should have heeded the warning......
Laurie Batog
It's not working for me, could you help me out?
Take the oaths.
holy fuck i actually smell sea salt and im no where near the ocean
THE WINDOW!! THE WINDOW!!
Can anyone see this in a horror trailer? Like, instead of a choir, it’s just this little kid speaking it like a prayer, and we get flashes of eldritch stuff happening and it’s capped off with the silhouette of Dagon rising from the depths?
Choir is a better idea I guess
Since the man who made the Colour Out Of Space adaptation is considering adapting the Shadow Over Innsmouth, maybe he could try to get the rights to this for trailer use like you suggested.
...siiiigh. ANOTHER one?
Shadow Over Innsmouth’s good, but seriously, mass media, Lovecraft wrote other stories.
@@KrimzonFlygon1 Wait, what other Shadow over Innsmouth film adaptations have there been?
@@lordlammi1562 Dagon. Cthulhu (2007), Chiaki J. Konaka's The Shadow Over Innsmouth, The Shadow Over Innsmouth (2015) by Brian Moore, not to mention the thousands of other stories and pieces of media that just slap Deep Ones in and say "Look! Lovecraft!" even if they don't follow the rest of the story, ie. Darkest Dungeon.
Video game wise, there's the ever-beloved Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth and The Sinking City, among others I'm certain I missed.
For contrast, when's the last time you saw an adaptation of the Dunwich Horror?
Oh my, what a lovely tune! It's sooo catchy! Also, when I played it for my boyfriend, who is a scientist with stunningly gorgeous hair, all of his cool little science thingies began to just go crazy.
I put this in front of my science thingies as well and played it, seemed to have a similar reaction, I will be posting my findings for the scientific community so that they may repeat the experiment.
I read this comment without knowing it was our friendly neighborhood radio host and knew it was about Carlos immediately
Immediately after listening to this, I was killed to death in a way most mysterious and foul.

hope things get better.👍 🦑🦐🐟🦎🐬🐋🐳🐚🦀🐙🦈🐌🐳🐳 *blub*
I believe you.
'Twas but a flesh wound.
Ah! You, too? I died to death in a most unexplained and foul manner as well!
I read a few comments and giggled at the things like, "thunderstorm warning" and whatnot.
Both times I've listened to this (days apart) the whole area seems to get a bit cooler, despite the normal temperatures being way too high.
This should be a US Navy hymn
Hey, its a good intimidation technique, in fact.
You better be ready to move to an arid landlocked plateau miles from any ocean after singing that!
Even here, you're not safe. Trust me. The rivers flow to the ocean.
This feels like an actual hymn, complete with the amen (Iä). Well done!
I wish this had subtitles - but now that I think about it, maybe I _don't_ wish that...

Why is that song so catchy? I want to listen it again and again, though I don't think it is very outstanding
Damn, I'm taking my words back, tis pretty good
Delightfully charming blasphemy.
This sounds surprisingly present.
I can't stop listening to this...
that's understandable
I can't either.
Listening to this I remembered, I live near the coast...
I'm scared now.
It's so strange to look at the way Lovecraft viewed the sea and compare it to what I know as the sea. He depicts it as something dark, mysterious, and evil, when in truth its a colorful world that serves as the reason for all life
To be fair, at the time people didn't know jack about the oceans. All they knew was that they were deep and full of dangerous creatures and terrible storms that sunk ships. There were no submarines to go exploring.

Haha, CSM from DOW
wish they would offer this for download seeing as it's not on the album.
Naess Revrac it's the main reason why I bought the album and was like "what the hell" when it wasint on it
like I know it says in its little story that it was left off the album but since they actually took the time to record it I thought it would atleast be a little bonus on the album
Some of the songs from the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society are based on songs from the real world. Does anyone know if this is the case? If so, please tell me which song it is.
Yes, this uses the tune of a hymn called "Eternal Father Strong to Save," written in the 1860s. It's also the official hymn of both the British and American navies.
@@JediHobbit89 Thank you my friend 💝 I will enjoy listening to the original music ✨
9/10
Not enough croaking
I played this and sing along with it and it rained heavily... Kinda cool actually, I needed the rain.
I just listened to this, but nothing has happened.
Wait - I smell rotting fish and there are strange guttural noises outside....
NOOOO!!!
Beautiful
obed marsh approves!
underrated
oh, a new xmas song! nice, peace on earth! love each other! 🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂
Nice melody. I thought it would be more abhorrent than this.
That's because it's being sung by humans. Imagine how it would sound by a chorus of blasphemous hybrids, then roll for SAN.
+Thoralmir It's the Navy Hymn melody. You probably know it as "For Those In Peril On The Sea."
I sing it, a pledge loyalty to Dagon.
All jokes aside, is there a download link for this song? I would like it for..... personal uses.... yes... personal uses....
Dragon isn’t real, he can’t hurt you.

Dagon
Join the order and you'll probably be fine.
And spell his name properly.
Fish monsters are infinitely better than dragons.
@@lordlammi1562 the idols found among his cultists or made by mad artists depict great Cthulhu having, among other traits, a dragon like body, so the typo aint totally wrong here I assume
Actually dagon is real but he's not as lovecraft described, real gods influenced him to right his stories that way, also in the spiritual son of dagon, patron god of the philistinas and king zagan the vampiric guardian of the qlippoth who will always have a high place in the nightside and my spiritual mother is Tiamat
Ah, but Wilmarth’s disappearance was totally unrelated... Just ask the My-Go.

Is there a version without the long silent intro and artificial crackle?
You hear a long silent intro and crackling? I haven't heard it in years
They sound Welsh! But that makes sense.
Heh.
how have I never heard of these songs before? Does this exist on some audio
streaming service like iTunes?
I think the HPLHS only sells it on their website. As far as I know it is not played on spotify or elsewhere.
@@vlzestar I have since found them and ordered the sea shanty album. Thanks for the info though

Hope this helps :)

thanks Obed! very cool!
The tune sounds familiar. What is it based on?
Eternal Father strong to save
@@yuggoth777 That's definitely it! Thanks!

Cool!
Used to listen to this pretty frequently on my way to work in Cape Ann, Lovecraft Country, MA.
Really set the mood knowing that I wasn't too too far away from Innsmouth.
Spiritually uplifting

See you down in Arizona Bay!
Not enough rough, garbled, croaking. 7.5/10.
I do not know as mutch of dagon
It's kinda confusing anyway. The Lovecraft Story "Dagon" aint playing in Innsmouth but the Dagon venerated in "the shadow over Innsmouth" is technically not the creature Dagon from the story of the same name or Dagon at all but Cthulhu pretending to be him and a being known as mother Hydra altogether - madness prevails!!
i'm fairly sure that's just theorized and not proven canon
@@Remimi_in_prison there is no canon
