  • In this video, Quinn Cunningham, one of our sponsored shooters, offers his thoughts on the merits of red dots. Trevor is a die hard irons shooter...can Quinn convince him?
This video will be the first in an examination of irons vs. red dots. Stay tuned for more on this subject, in particular, how to make the switch to red dots if irons are your thing.

💯, agree. Red dots have their place. My personal opinion on carry a pistol for EDC. No need for a optic or light. Most people seems like they are doing because it's ' the cool ' thing to do. For me. Iron sights EDC, Red dot for the range

The absolute beauty of a dot is that the dot appears where you are looking. That’s what makes it so fast and that’s why you’re able to shoot more accurately. The dot goes where the eyes go.

Looking forward to the next Tech Tuesday. I find myself hunting for the dot a lot more than I wish. I also use different platforms so consistency in hold (as in natural point of aim)is problematic. I just can’t shoot one pistol on range day.

If you have multiple systems it is a bit more difficult. I run a p10F, pdp pro and some sigs. There are a few differences. If you go to Modern Samurai Project look up his vids on finding the dot. Best stuff out there on learning the dot that I can find at the moment. Also practice plenty on drawing and use your right pinky to pull the gun down on presentation. This can help. Have a good one

I tried a dot recently. I probably screwed up some which way but the best I could get it sighted in was 3-4" off of point of aim. I plan to revisit red dots when I get a chance but I'll stick to iron sights for now. Besides the mr920 sights are pretty great for iron sights anyway.

After carrying irons for 8 years I gave a Holosun 507k x2 a try on a few of my micro 9's. Ultimately, the added bulk for EDC and super slim chance of needing to take a distant shot in an EDC scenario make me prefer the irons still. However, I understand the appeal of faster target acquisition, a single point of aim dot, etc. Maybe I need more red dot practice but it's just not my preference and my vision is fairly good at this point still fortunately.

As both a new firearm owner and someone of advanced age needing to wear glasses, I decided to get a red dot for my gun. I purchased a Burris Fastfire 4 Red Dot Sight. While I love using it at the range, the only issue I have with it is that in order to use it I have to press and hold a button for about 1-2 seconds to turn it on before I can use it. This makes it almost unusable in a sudden emergency situation where you have to draw and acquire your assailant quickly. Is this common amongst other or all red dot sights?

  • @jackomalley3687

When I first used red dots I hated it. However I learned you don't have to wait until the dot stops to get accurate hits. You simply just have to break the shot when the dot paints the Target. Overall I be am much faster with red dots then iron sights

Fear + adrenaline + someone trying to kill you = point shooting 99% of the time for self defense.
    Laser sight for the win.
You can stay target focused and have a visible reference on the target from any shooting position without have to get the gun up to eye level.

Yes, bows have sights. Certainly modern bows do, but attach a goose quill to a longbow with a piece of string, and you have a sight. That is how I shoot my longbow all the time. It's secure and adjustable for range.

  • @dennisl4000
    @dennisl4000 11 місяців тому

I do not feel that sights are required on a pistol, if you adhere to the FBI stats. on average shooting. In WWI as I understand it, training on shooting the 1911 basically consisted of alignment with the forearm. That being said there is also a whole discussion around predictive shooting. I am up in years and started switched to MRD's on all my EDCs several starting about 5 years ago. The draw and presentation is definitely different than irons, but with practice and proper technique there are as fast for me. Great discussion on the topic. By the way, I am not a Glock fan primarily because of the angle of presentation. However, Shadow Systems definitely resolved that issue by changing the grip angle with your back strap system, way to go. Today I do not hear any debate about the value of optics on long guns and I feel we are rapidly approaching that with pistols.

A green dot is better for my old eyes with astigmatism. What a lot of people fail to consider is what if your glasses are not even on ? Look at your iron sights and then micro dot. For myself it was not even close. The micro dot was better. The CR with a carry version of the holosun I will carry after 500-600 rds are fired

No sight alignment is a preference, not an advantage. I disagree that a dot is more accurate, but they are certainly no less accurate either. Also, no one ever pulls up irons with a major discrepancy in sight alignment, because you are aligning as the weapon comes up into sight. I've seen many a dot shooting competitor draw and be in the dead zone where their grip is off and the dot is completely out of sight. The one place you are correct is that the dot is easier, and that is the entire reason for their popularity. Why actually learn to sight when you can go the lazy route. I've never had any issues going back and forth, irons to dot to irons, so I don't get that one.

I will never carry without a dot again. It made me a way better shooter with both dots and irons, allows me to threat focus and shoot way more accurately and quicker at distance. With the amount of shootings stopped by people at greater distances I think it is important to learn, take Eli Dickens and that Chad Boomer in his church. Some shootings are over 40 yards. Dot for life and as for reliability I literally have irons still so I have a back up that is still just as good as irons have always been, plus I have seen more issues with irons falling off and breaking than dots these days.

Every pistol I carry has a dot. My old eyes just work better with them and I shoot better and quicker than with irons.
For those who have trouble acquiring the dot when presenting your weapon, you might try looking for the front sight as you are presenting it. You should find the dot coming into view as your pistol becomes level with the target.

Red dots will help you become a better iron sight shooter. I'll argue that the trend of even the most devoted iron sight shooters are closer to the red dot than they think.
What do most iron sight shoot? Either a fiber optic/tritium front sight with a blacked out rear sight, it's just a smaller sight picture. After training/shooting red dots you can begin to shoot iron sights target focused as well in most practical and defensive situations.
