Modest Mouse is one of my favorite bands. I love all of their stuff, but I'm a bigger fan of their earlier stuff. I felt the same way as you do. I heard they weren't the best live, but I saw them in Pittsburgh last summer and I can honestly tell you it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. The energy of the band mixing with the energy of the crowd, it was just an amazing experience. This video doesn't do them justice, you have to be there.
Modest mouse makes the sounds that humans crave.

i was at that pittsburgh show too and they did put on a great show, put a lot of emotion into all of their songs.. i guess it depends on what kind of day isaac is having .. ?
I remember watching them during weekend 1, and was really disappointed. Was super excited to hear them live. But there was too much banter and I think they even had to get cut off because time ran out. I remember thinking I should have left to see Dog Blood. Anyone else recall?
Isaac beats the shit out of his guitars on stage. It's pretty much not a modest mouse concert unless a guitar goes out of tune mid-song at least once.
This sound mix is a great example of why festivals are not a good representation of a bands sound

Sometimes I wonder if he experiences word salad and is just speaking gibberish when hes talking to the audience.
I saw them live last August so yes, most the time he just speaks gibberish and moves onto the next song. he had a speech disorder so that might be the cause of it, I don't know.

I really enjoy how they always fuck up float on for the people who only show for that song, enjoy the rest of their sound folks.

MM is the best band there is, but this was far from their best performance.
Either that or it's the crowd that makes the difference. The crowd at the Pittsburgh show was really great. It looks to me like Isaac is putting a lot into the music during this performance too. I just don't think Modest Mouse's music translates well through video. Just about every video I find sounds a little off, but I'm sure they sounded great at all those shows. I just think you have to be there.

i wish they put a little more effort into some of these songs, yeah the stage sound just didn't agree with them, but in general they don't seem to be crowd pleasers. Probably my favorite band at the moment but it makes me feel differently about seeing them live now.

It's not like Isaac was doing a spectacular job on vocals. He doesn't do this song justice anymore, or any of the songs from The Moon & Long Drive, to be totally honest.
