I'm Thai and I subscribed to your channel because you showed us the unseen attractions of Bangkok Thailand. Of course, I also practice English from your channel.
To find out if you're going in the right direction on the BTS, the train will display the last stop on that particular line. Based on what I could tell in the video, the train at 05:57 is headed NORTH-BOUND to its last stop in KHU KHOT.
Victory Monument is a military monument in Bangkok, Thailand. The monument was erected in June 1941 to commemorate the Thai victory in the Franco-Thai War. At that time, France was defeated in WWII by the invading German forces, so Prime Minister Field Marshall Pibulsongkram took this opportunity to invade present-day Cambodia to reoccupy Pathabong province ceded to the colonial ruler France during King Rama V. French troops could not stop Thai invasion and the peace deal was brokered by Japan. However, when Japan surrendered, Thailand as Japanese ally also surrendered and France retook Pathabong and demanded money compensation otherwise as one of the permanent Securities Council member, it would oppose Thailand joining UN. The US helped brokered the deal and Thailand paid a little less compensation to France.
Great video. Buddhism is a religion of compassionate seeing and mindfulness. Non-harming to all beings. The Medicine Buddha is a healing buddha. A Buddhist monk can be a warrior monk who practices kung fu. A man or woman who protects the dharma or Buddhist teachings and way of life.
It took 9 years to rebuild it to replace the old one which is only 16 meters. th.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B8%9E%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B0%E0%B8%9B%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%84%E0%B9%8C%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B8%E0%B8%93%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%8A%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%A1%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%8A%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%A1%E0%B8%AB%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%AB%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%A3
Awesome vlog!!!! Sly's longer videos are the best. His curiosity for cultures and exploring cities is contagious. But the best part about Sly is his positive attitude and acceptance of other cultures and nationalities and his constant drive to learn and explore
You may go Queen SiriKit National Convention Center (by bts to Asok and take subway to their station). Many things there with many restaurants and evening walk to the park next to Centre (Benchakitti Park). It’s beautiful in the evening and night.
Traditional Thai costumes seen at Wat Arun are hi-so and usually worn by wives of high officials at former occasions such as Royal Ballroom celebration at Government House or at Official New Year's morning merit making presided by Thai prime minister/wife as well as cabinet ministers/wives. Woman also wears traditional Thai dress during wedding ceremony while Thai man usually wears western suit or white formal uniform if being civil servant. Legend states that when King Taksin, at the time Ayutthaya mandarin, led some troops to break the Burmese siege of Ayutthaya and arrived at this old temple at dawn, so the temple was then named Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun). After Ayutthaya fell after one-year siege, he led troops from Chanthaburi province to expel the occupied Burmese troops in Ayutthaya. Then he proclaimed himself King and moved the capital from Ayutthaya to Thonburi and built a royal palace adjacent to Wat Arun and this temple then became the Royal Temple within the Palace domain in line with Ayutthaya tradition. The same could be said about King Rama I when he moved the capital from Thonburi across the Chao Phraya River and built Emerald Buddha Temple within the Grand Palace. When Thonburi was still a distinct province before it was dissolved to form Bangkok metropolis about 50 years ago, Thonburi's symbol was Phra Prang (Stupa) of this temple. Phra Prang is lit at night and can be seen from tour boats or roof-top bars on the opposite side of Chao Phraya River.
Thailand now is only half size of what used to be. Siam lost territories to both England (Myanmar and Malaysia) and France (Lao and Cambodia), not colonized in exchange of territory loss. Anyway, this is past history, no need to bother, just be present.
Thailand started bus service in Bangkok nearly 100 years ago, it was run by private bus operators at a reasonable price but still making a decent profit. However, about 45 years ago, a certain political party campaigned to make bus in Bangkok free and when this party came to power as a coalition govt, it nationalized bus services, buying the private operators and created Bangkok Mass Transport Authority (BMTA) to run a free bus service for a few years. When the govt could no longer afford the huge annual subsidy, it allowed the BMTA to charge a cheap ticket price for non-aircon buses and then introduced air-con buses at 2-3 times the price of non-aircon buses. The non-aircon buses have been running at a loss since then up to today while the air-con buses run at break-even. The BMTA then granted private bus operators to run non-aircon and air-con buses again about 30 years ago to reduce the BMTA's mounting debts as private operators seem to know how to run buses at a decent profit even though they charge the same ticket fares as BMTA's own buses. To this day, BMTA non-aircon red/orange buses are still relatively cheap less than 10 baht, one of the cheapest fare in the world. Every year, the national govt allocates a supplementary budget to shore up BMTA's inefficient operation. It is apparent that the first populist policy of Thai govt does not work as is the case worldwide such as the bankrupted Venezuela and father of populist policy Argentina which seeks IMF help at least 6 times since WWII.
As a devoted Buddhist, yes Buddhism is a peaceful religion. Same goes to other religions like Islam, Taoism etc. Unless you are talking about some Satanic Cult.
