Giving insight to an event like this (Chaos involving summer, holiday, weather systems, and compounding delays).
The crew leaving FL to ATL must've been advised by ATC (Tower) that Atlanta had entered a ground stop due to weather. Ground stops are put into effect when weather gets so bad that it is either impossible to navigate around or penetrate for arrivals or departures. They can also be put into effect when winds exceed certain limits or micro bursts are evident. Ground stops typically don't last for more then an hour occasionally two hours at most since weather usually moves pretty quickly and with all the energy dissipated don't have long lifespans.
Tim's flight was delayed more then many others due to the proximity Florida is to Georgia/Atlanta. After a ground stop ATC will give us whats called a EDCT (Estimated Departure Clearance Time) or wheels up time. This is to handle inbound traffic at an acceptable rate and since the ground stop and delay this inevitably causes a massive backlog in inbound flights as well as outbound flights. The priority for EDCT's/inbounds is based on a few criteria. First being if the aircraft was in the air already or on the ground. Aircraft in the air in a holding pattern or already enroute will get priority as they are burning fuel while aircraft on the ground have the luxury of RTG (Returning to Gate) or shutting the engines down and running the APU which burns significantly less fuel. The other criteria is distance. Aircraft that are inbound internationally will get priority as they have been in the air for several hours and can't hold too long without hitting BINGO and diverting to their alternate. After that longer transcon flights take priority to fit into the inbounds. Then lastly the short haul/regional routes can be plugged in during gaps as they are the hardest to fit into a sequence (This used to be a daily occurrence for me when I was flying regional jets out of DFW and IAH).
Luggage is a whole different animal. Unfortunately the current system we have isn't the best but its the fastest to turn around flights and try to make up on delays. Bags are put into the cargo bins based on checked bags first and then gate checks last. So, if you checked your bag at the ticketing counter before going to TSA your bag will be one of the first bags packed into the cargo bin. Unfortunately in the event you need your bag removed this means the ground crew would have to pull each and every bag out of each cargo bin to reach the bag and then have to search through the bags to find the properly tagged bag causing significantly more delays. While I do wish airlines ops would be more proactive about figuring out which passengers will and won't make their connecting flights it's towards the bottom of their list when all hell breaks loose with weather and a ground stop in the airlines biggest and busiest hub. Their main goal is getting aircraft off the gates as fast they can to make gates available for inbounds and get the airline running back on time.

To add to his point about Atlanta being one of the “larger” travel hubs, Atlanta airport is actually THE BUSIEST airports….in the WORLD. It facilitates more passengers every year than any other airport in the WORLD, not just US. The fact it completely shutdown at all is insane. Terrible luck Timmy😂

Tim I travel for a living, I know the struggle with both baggage and flight cancellations.
It took me 24 hours to go from Albany NY to Myrtle Beach. In that trip it took me 14 hours to go from Albany to Newark NJ. It’s about a two and a half hour drive, I was so pissed that day.
I’ve had my luggage go one the wrong flight from Denver to Chicago. Then I called the baggage help for assistance and they were absolutely zero help. My bag ended up stuck in Chicago for the day and the next day it went to Philly, to Chicago to Denver then to my final stop in grand junction. I finally got my luggage the night before I was set to fly home.

I mean as someone who is studying to be an ATC, shutting down an airport is common especially for weather. It causes major rerouting and high work load for controllers. Air corridors have to be close and others opened, clearance delivery/app/dep/and center all get swamped issuing new clearance plus pilots who don’t feel safe landing and do a go around have to be resequenced in a line of other arrivals which also causes delays. ATC will also delay flights to slow the traffic flow so the airspace will not become crowded and dangerous, also you don’t want to over work the controller (it’s already a stressful job). That’s just my take now back to the video.

Imagine having an INFANT that is still needing to be fed every 2 - 4 hours and you warm their bottle up to give them during take off at 7pm so they will have the bottle to soothe them and help their ears pop. Then they say their is a 15 minute delay, that turned into 45 minutes, then it turned into "we lost the crew for the plane", which then turned into "we found the crew but we lost the plane", when then turned into "we found the plane by the crew timed out", to then at 10 o'clock "we found a plane and crew we will start boarding momentarily" to finally at 12am (5 hours after we should have left) we start to board. Then "there is no cabin space and we need some people to volunteer to check their bags". Finally at 1am we are taking off (this is the time we were to be landed and back in our house) and then for a 3 hour flight I got to pace to aisle because the moment I stopped moving my son would start screaming and the flight crew acted like I was inconveniencing them taking the screaming baby to the back to bounce him around until he fell asleep just in time for the landing sequence to get it all started all over again with the screaming child.
I felt so bad for every passenger on that flight, but they had all been through the same ordeal and during the 5 hours waiting in the terminal my son was such a champ. He was barely a year old and the number of other passengers that commented on how happy he was and how calm we were during that whole ordeal waiting in the terminal all applauded me for pacing and bouncing my kid for 3 hours on the flight. It was like a Red Sea parted moment where passengers that had stood up to wait to get off all motioned for my wife, my son and me to exit first. People were just very supportive and kind to us. Mind you, its like 4am ish. and no one got much, if any sleep during that flight.
I will never fly on that airline again but the other passengers on that plane were 10/10 the most kindest I have ever seen.
Actually one passenger (one old enough to be my aunt) asked if she could hold my kid and give me a break. I politely declined but the kindness of strangers stuck in a flying tube in the sky is amazing when you get to witness it.
Oh and we had a stretch of turbulence too... that was fun, cuz it was also like auto bouncing, but also loud AF and my kid def wasn't relaxing. LOL

This video was like a rollercoaster of anger, laughter & more anger. I couldn't even imagine how I would've reacted in that scenario. I would've been stewing * may have snapped. But, I have anger issues... HahaHa!!
