+Rena J - I'm working with my travel machine - a vintage Viking Ruby cam sewing machine.

That was my mom's machine. I remember playing in the childrens nook at the sewing machine store when she bought it and I learned to sew on that machine. It lasted her over 30 years before she finally upgraded and it was still working when even after all those years of heavy use.

It's called the colormatic or the 2000 series, even though this is the 6000s version. Good to see someone demonstrating sewing on some of these older machines. Especially the Viking 2000 series.

What sewing machine are you using in this video?

I would like to try out decorative stitches on the front of a childs dress. Its a lightweight cotton. For best results what do you suggest?

I would test first on a scrap of fabric from the dress to see what happens. If your machine tries to eat it (yes, that sometimes happens!) then that's a sign you need some stabilizer. Look for a lightweight stabilizer or just double or triple layer the fabric to see if you can just add a few more layers in that area to make it stable enough to take the stitching. But definitely, absolutely test this on a scrap of fabric first!

What kind of fabric, batting or stabilizer combination did you use to do this?

Let's see...I believe I was working with a medium weight cut-away stabilizer in the middle of two 100% cotton squares of fabric. I wanted enough stabilizing that it held together, but not so much it was ridiculously stiff.

Have you ever had a machine with a Stippling Stitch? I know someone who has that! It makes quite small stitches though...

Yes, I had that decorative stitch on a Janome machine. It's so tiny! I guess you could have a little Stippling trim on a shirt. Lol!

What was the stitch called labeled with a 1?

I'm not sure...keep in mind all of these stitches are found on an older Viking machine so they may no longer be standard on machines.

I know this is an older video, but I am curious how you determined what lengths and widths to use. I was hoping they were all the same variations but they are not.

Nope, it was just whatever sounded good at the time!
