  • This video shows the work involved in placing the new Walthers Valley Cement Plant on my layout. The old track from the yard is removed, new track laid and wiring sorted out. Soil and grass is glued down and we finish with a bit of operation at the new facility.

Nice work Steve. You could extend that track further and use the 2 doors on the back building as a way to use boxcars. Could be loaded with pallets of bagged cement. Dave

Your cement plant could ship bagged cement which would allow you to spot box cars there and maybe add a warehouse building.

I never would have imagined you could re-use track once ballasted. I guess I've never tried dissolving glue with water...didn't know that was a thing either. So would you fully submerge a track segment in water to totally remove the ballast? Great video and outcome for your desired change!

I did re use the track in this case. The ballast was glued down with diluted elmers glue. I assume it is water soluble as spraying the track with water really loosens the ballast. And then I took a track segment under running warm water in the deep sink and lightly scrubbed with a brush and it cleans up fairly well. The biggest problem of course is damaging ties, particularly where there was a track nail that you neglected to pull out prior to lift the track off the layout!

@@zekecycle Thanks for the info! That totally makes me re-think the possibility of re-doing an area of track like you have done. I use Elmer's when gluing ballast myself.

I was able to salvage 80% of the truck from my old layout. However I only glue it down with Elmer’s glue. Not sure how it would work with stronger adhesives

@@CrookedriverandeasternrrI only use Elmer's as well due to water solubility.

That was a very quick re-built indeed. For my personal taste the whole area now looks way too cramped, but as the old saying goes: Your layout - your rules 🙂

When i laid out the footprint it seemed better, now all built up it is abit tight between the industries on either side. It may have better to put two small industries in there.

they use box cars years ago to ship to box store warehouses because it keep the bags out of the rain
