If you want to strip anything off at snow foam and shampoo stage you can’t beat zero for a clean slate

can you washing up liquid for pre wash for the harsh dirt and grime?

It's not advisable owning to the salts, plus, a decent prewash diluted at 1:10 is more effective, safer and about the same cost.
