    For Monitoring and Control have a Look at Node Red - it just blew my mind what you can do with it for almost no money (just ad a raspberry pi and youre good to go).

      Very cool. My biggest challenge so far is finding the right hardware to monitor voltages and currents, and interfacing that into a computer. I prefer Hall effect sensors for current over installing inline shunts. I’m still looking for something affordable when purchased in quantity.

      @@djp_video what kind of Voltages? For the Battery there are some good Battery Monitors with Shunts so you can monitor Amps and Volts. Sadly it is not easy to get the data; victron is the only company that kind of supports diy, opensource and raspberry pis.
      For AC there are lots of Devices out there that talk modbus tcp which can be imported into node red.

      Everything I want to monitor is either 12V DC or 110V AC. On the DC side, current values can get upwards of 150A, in both directions. I'd really like to avoid using shunts, as they really complicate installation -- I'm trying to stick with Hall effect sensors instead. On the AC side, current values can get as high as 20 in peaks, but sustained values never get over 15A.

      We have six of them and they're OK, but not great. Like Doug said you end up spending 15-20k for a proper setup with SMPTE Fiber and for that price I'd be looking at a proper Sony, GV, Panasonic type setup. They're also terrible in low light.

    Great videos. I am learning a lot! it has been a while since I have been in from t of a TF console (covid) but I think you can do an output delay as an insert across the outputs for aux mixes. and the matrix outputs have them available in the output screen view.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, I have one of my stereo auxes set to do this. I'll assign input channels to this buss and then un-assign them from the main stereo mix. I don't have to do this often, as the cameras I use have a pretty short latency.

    Does your replay software control the Hyperdeck? If so, I would love to try to try it out. I know you said it isn't ready for the public but as an IT Manager for a TV station, I would love to alpha/best test it because it would solve a problem I have right now.

    You said that it's really expensive to make a decent camera chain so you can shade your camera's. Blackmagic broadcast camera's can do that and aren't expensive and would work with your Blackmagic system. What are your thoughts on that?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  4 роки тому +1

      Their low light performance makes them next to useless in many of the venues we work in

    Does not having CCUs for your cameras hurt you when doing sports outdoors? We are doing a two camera football game every week and getting them to match, even though they are identical cameras, is very hard.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  4 роки тому +1

      Of course. Starting with common color settings (white balance, etc.) helps, but we often have to have camera operators adjust iris or gain for outdoor events.

    Minus the coronavirus, on average how many gigs do you have in a year, and do you often have to drive a bit to get to them? I would like to make a set up, but don't know how many gigs I would be able to do. Do you have any tips for advertising getting into the industry

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  4 роки тому +4

      It's up and down. In 2018 we averaged about one event a week, but 2019 and 2020 have averaged an event about every 10 days.
      Every market is different, so you may find that your area could support more, or it might provide fewer opportunities. And as far as finding work, the best way is word of mouth. Most forms of advertising don't help much. So if you're starting out, it may be best to work for someone else for a while to build up relationships with others in the industry.

    When you're driving around, does the vibrations, pot holes etc. affect the equipment, especially the monitors.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  2 роки тому +2

      Not at all. Things hardly move at all. The weight of the trailer combined with its suspension absorb nearly all of the vibration. But I also drive carefully as well.

    Hey Doug. What do you think of the new BMD Cameras. Is low lighting still and issue or have they improved. I'm considering the Studio Camera 4k Pro and Leica DG Vario_elmarit 50-200mm lens to replace an old Panasonic AG-AC90 camcorder and a Sony PXW-x70

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  2 роки тому +1

      The low light performance on the 2021 Blackmagic Studio cameras is far better than it used to be on the older models and should be adequate for most situations as long as you have a decent lens.
      I recently spent a week testing the new cameras and will be publishing a video sometime relatively soon with my findings. While low light performance is good, the cameras still generally pale in comparison to camcorders in the same price range. There might be a handful of situations in which the BMD cameras are better, but it feels like those are an exception rather than the rule. Compared to the Sony 1-inch camcorders like the X70, the BMD cameras produce an image with less noise, but everything else about them is worse. The Sonys produce an image with a LOT more detail, have far less jello effect, have a wider zoom range, have a larger depth of field (which is a good thing for live video), and produce a generally more pleasing image. When I release the comparison video you'll be able to see for yourself.

    I am interested in streaming video events. But, I don't know how and where to find clients. And I don't know how to get them to find me. Any suggestions as to where I can contact people that might need video and streaming services. I live in Washington State but not in Seattle.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  4 роки тому

      That's the hardest part of starting a business.
      Most people who run their own companies start by working for someone else and get to know others in the industry and what types of businesses need these types of services. Once you have a few clients, if you've done a good job for them they'll become contacts and references for you to reach out to find others. Word of mouth is the best source of new clients.
      You can also sign up on sites like productionhub.com and Google to get your business listed there. Depending on the area you live in, these might be great resources. But where I'm at I've seen very little interest coming through them.

      @@djp_video Thanks for your quick response. What kind of businesses are hiring you? Sports, Schools, Companies, etc. I'm looking for ideas of people to contact. I've always worked for a company that had a sales department getting the work. I worked for a TV station producing TV commercials.
      Now I have to find the contacts. I'm just not sure what businesses or people use this kind of service. I just don't know where to start. Thanks.

    • @djp_video

      We do a little of everything, but over the history of DJP we've done more in the music industry than anything else. In 2020 we've done more corporate work than we have in the past.
      Reach out to everyone you know and let them know that you're looking for video work. Most likely there will be people you know that work for companies that need some video production work. You'll probably have to start out with smaller jobs, and maybe even working for less than you're worth, or even free, just to start establishing a reputation.
