If there's anything that is close to the Swedish soul, it's melancholy and that's what this song is all about, and many places all over Sweden are mentioned where people feel melancholic, and Swedes in general can relate very deeply to that. Also Jerry Williams who almost never sang in Swedish really shocked his audience with this emotional live version of the Ted Ström song that already had been a hit with Monica Törnell a couple of years earlier. So the song was very famous, but the audience did not expect the even back in 1990 legendary rock singer Jerry Williams to interpret it, and when he did it with such skills and passion it was a sure hit, even if it does not sound like a typical commercial hit tune. Thanks for another great video, always a treat to see your reaction videos.

I have a feeling that this type of "melancholic AOR" was at its peak in the late 80s. I'm thinking of Eva Dahlgren, Marie Fredriksson, Tommy Nilsson, Niklas Strömstedt, Freda, Ratata and others, all of whom made it to the top of the charts.

He has captured the soul of Sweden, how we can feel, what we don't acknowledge, what is hard and tough, and just about being a Swede at times, and through time, in generations, specially at winter.

"Vintersaga" is not really representative of Jeryy, but the live version is one of his strongest performances in his late years and was very popular with his fans. You should hear the Monical Törnell version for comparison, which has a rock steady tempo with a lot of synths, to create the same eerie winter melancholy feeling but in a different way. This is more an intrpretation than a cover, actually. And this wasn't all the verses..

    • @grossteilfahrer
      @grossteilfahrer 3 роки тому +13

Oh and the main point is actually the lyrics, that "will" send tingles dwn the spine and a tear in the eye of every. single. swede. over 35, because they capture the "old" sweden melancholy to a level of relatedness not may other things can. There is something for veeryone to recognise and feel in this song. Every swede know *exactly" what is it like to be freezing in queue for the "stadspub" (the one open pub in in a small town), and exactly how a "tradare i snörök" looks. It is a summary of how winter feels, that evoke a mysterious feeling and "you just know" what they're talking about. We all know how "kärleken får leva mella nattskiftet och drömmen" (love lives betwen te night shift and the dream, fueled by cheap wine). This is the music of the old working class. by 1990 it was nostalgia for a time gone by already. It would make 16 year old me long for times gone by, and my parents cry. its magic.
Also, its a recent volvo commercial, (amande bergman version) with really nice imagery.
THe Jerry Williams version lacks the driving synth riff of the Monica T and Amanda Bergman versions though the guitars are awesome. You really should compare all three.

This is an interesting cover that I never heard. It’s not a swedish classic. The earlier version sung by Monica Törnell (in 1984) is the real swedish classic version of this song. Just saying.

Freddie Wadling - Blott en dag! In one video you requested some swedish religous songs, and this is one of the most well known ones. It’s a psalm, so it’s often sung by a choir or the congregation in church. It’s been recorded countless of times, but Freddie Wadlings version is hauntingly beautiful. He is also a very interesting swedish artist that you definetly should check out!! You won’t be disappointed.

Never heard it too. It’s an interesting cover / interpretation of the song Vintersaga. But with so many swedes never heard it this version of “vintersaga” is not a Swedish classic. The song ”Vintersaga” is a true swedish classic though - but with Monica Törnell from 1984. That version is widespread known. And I think Jonathan should do a reaction to that more famous version too.

    Second stanza:
In Malmö, the fog is scratched by the sirens of the ferries
And on the other side of the strait, the world begins.
A lone Volvo toils against the headwind on the Tjörnbron
The cinema in Pajala offers "Deliverance"
The Lapland night train roars like a wild beast through the night
The farms turn off their lights
    A storm-whipped Marstrand prays it´s Pater Noster
Stockholm city sways in its intoxication
That's when the great sadness rolls in
And an icy, grey-cold wind blows from the sea.

I would love to see your reaction to another swedish legend. Who is still alive. I´m talking about Ulf Lundell. His greatest hit is "Öppna landskap" from 1984 (I think). This song got so popular that many people wanted to replace our national anthem with "Öppna landskap". But he has been very productive so there are hundreds of other songs to listen to as well. He is inspired mostly by Bob Dylan , according to himself. But he is also influaenced by Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. You might like him!

That's the Swedish "folksjäl" for ya! I think that's why it's so big.
You need to put it in context:
You are bone tired, fighting your way home against the icy cold wind blowing sleet in your face. It is february, it's been dark for 9 months and you will never see the sun again. You have worked 12 hours nightshift at the factory for minimum wage and the only thing you have to look forward to is 2 weeks of summer heat before it gets cold and dark again. No offence men...
