I just bought his book, as my son has been diagnosed dyslexic. He will be 8yrs old in April. since he started school at age 5, he has struggled. He has passed to each grade but I see this year has been worse. he cries his head hurts everday when I pick him up. when we try to read at home, he rubs his eyes constantly and begins with headaches again. we had his eyes checked every school year and this year 2x. His teacher and principal really cared and took time to help my son. now we know, and this is a whole new direction in his ( our) life. I'm not an expert,in need help to help him. I would like to find this program close to my area,in central Texas.
Don't give up my fellow Dyslexics. And don't let anyone tell you you're stupid - not ever - I top-out an IQ test at 175 or higher, and you too are far more gifted than you know. The Dyslexic IQ pretty much STARTS at 130 ~ the level required to get into Mensa ... and that's a Dyslexic on a bad day. Most people - the one's who used to call us stupid - only have an IQ of 100 ~ significantly lower than ours. So remember, we put the Sexy in Dyslexia. ;)
It depends on how much you think it is worth to be able to eliminate the problems associated with dyslexia. Most private schools for dyslexia charge much more for their services. Keep in mind that parents without funds can opt to work on their own using a book supplemented with a kit.
You spell better than i do and i am very successful construction manager.......Learn to deal with it....get Ron's book and read it you will be enlightened i promise.....what ever you do DO NOT GIVE UP
DavisDyslexia yes we do have it, but its so hard to get! its the way the systems are set out, ive been searching for help for 18 years, i finished 13 years of school without help because our government only now really grasp dislexia and that it still isnt identified in our school systems!
That has been true in the past, but we hope it will change in the future. Ron Davis was in New Zealand last month in connection with Dyslexia Awareness week and has been working with the Cookie Munchers Charitable Trust as part of their successful effort to get dyslexia officially recognized by the Minister of Education, which we hope would be the first step toward getting all children the help they need.
Can you find an adult who might be willing to work with you? The Davis methods are summarized and explained in the book, The Gift of Dyslexia, and you could work through the basic techniques as long as you have the book and a willing helper.
The Davis Young Learner Kit for Home Use will give you what you want. It is geared for home schoolers working with children age 5-7. You can find that kit on the Dyslexia the Gift web site.
I didnt know he was invalved in that, I brought heaps of those cookies! I saw the information on it and I said to myself something has to change! I cant change my school life as that is in the past, but I can HELP change the future!
To parents, your child is NOT "dys"-functional, they're HYPER-functional & that's the problem. School is written for the relatively dim mass, but Dyslexics CAN learn to do it the way the rest do & then there are no limits - suddenly the "slowest" in class actually turns out to be the most intelligent, it just shows in different ways, but that's due to the learning paradigm & it's severe limitations; but we're gifted & normal education models just 'freeze' our brains ... change the model & WOW!

Actually, if you are in New Zealand -- you definitely do have this program. You can find info by doing a Google search for "Davis Dyslexia New Zealand" (Sorry for the delayed in my response - I missed seeing this post before).
GET SOME COLORED GLASSES! Like trying to teach a blind person to drive a car. You can tell them how to shift and turn, but they can't see the road. In 1988, 60 minutes aired a segment, colored glasses for dyslexics. I was severally dyslexic. I went out and got a pair. Purple was my color. Blues or reds are the colors that work best. At 28 I could read for the first time! I could see the print. It's a physical handicap. Side note, after having lasik eye surgery, I haven't need my colored glasses.
Would you like help? Because Davis Facilitators can work with clients of any age. The program works because it is a different approach -- it does not rely on drill or tutoring, but rather provides the individual with tools that fit their learning style. Adults typically progress very quickly, usually more quickly than young children.
