I’m late, but the separation of the water based taco is because it contains water, and being placed on an oily surface it doesn’t sit without spreading- but at least there was holo 📀

I've spotted the problem! When you rub your finger on the already cured gel top coat, the oils of your fingers are transferring on to the already cured nail. So when you rub in the chrome powder, it doesn't stick as well because the oils are preventing it from sticking. You're welcome Cristine!

Science explanation for taco issues post-chrome: the chrome pigment is made of a metallic powder that can bind and stick fine to the first layer of taco. By the time you build up enough of the pigment to get the beautiful chrome finish you've concentrated enough of the pigment for it to show its true colors: it's made of a hydrophobic material that the final water based taco struggles to stick to. I suggest using a normal top coat to seal off the look.

Well essentially, the one layer of chrome pigment and the original water based top coat created a aqua-phobic like surface that then refused the next layer of water based top coat, but somehow with the amount of layers of only pigment, caused an imbalance, allowing the water based top coat to adhere to the surface.
It took FIVE MINUTES of reading through people commenting the same 3 things over and over again to find this. This comment needs to be bumped more

It might not be the lamp, there is usually a sticky layer on gel polish that you need to remove with alcohol. The chrome doesn't like the sticky stuff v

Yep you can and I found that the silicon tools rub it away. The eyeshadow applicator works so much better

ya right she forget to do that cuz when she tried the gel polish first time she removed the sticky stuff
you need the sticky layer of the gel for the chrome to stick. that's why for the regular polish she had to change top coats because the water based top coat leaves the sticky later behind :))

I have been having so much fun with the Holo powder I got. My favorite thing so far is doing the magnetic polish and then tipping the nails with the Holo powder. The glossy taco picks up just a little bit of the Holo powder and gives a scattered Holo effect all over the nail with the main Holo still being at the tip of the nail and still letting the magnetic effect of the polish underneath come through. Thank you Cristine for showing me the way of the Holo sexual.

(googling and trying to remember my general chemistry course) I think that water-based top coat acts like that because the nail surface is so smooth and the top coat's cohesion was greater than adhesion, which means it's easier for it to stay together as drops than wet the surface. It's more or less how water acts on really sleek surfaces. Any actual chemistry people are free to correct me, I'm more of a biomedical science person.

Christine....why did Ben not SIMPLY explain....that you need an adapter for that UV lamp? They are pretty easy to find.... Online, in tech stores (I don't know Canadian ones....do you have RadioShack or Fry's ....even Walmart sells them) also...you can find them in airports. If the Uv lamp has a voltage converter box (like the wire goes into a box of some sort between the wall and the device) then just a euro to North American adapter will work just fine. 😜😊 But your Christine way worked well too... :-)

The science as to why the water based top coat didn't stay on top of the nails is probably because water molecules (which make up a large portion of the top coat) are polar, meaning the Hydrogen and oxygen atoms are arranged in such a way that one side of the molecule is poaitive and the other is negative. This is what gives water its surface tension. The chrome powder is probably very non-polar in it's molecular structure, meaning the water molecules in the top coat find it impossible to bind properly, giving it hydrophobic properties. This is just what I reckon, another chemist can correct me if they disagree.
Claire McKinley that was a lot of unnecessary words. Basically all you said was the chrome powder are most likely hydrophobic so the water based topcoat couldn’t attach to it.

You should be able to pick up a plug attachment at any hardware store to make it fit the normal plug.
