Sony made some killer radios, probably as good to the consumer as the German radios of the time at a lower cost. (I assume) You certainly have developed a tool set of restoration ideas there Manuel, nothing phases you. Well done 👍🙂
Just a hint to not damage tight screws, the japanese ones have a different profile than Phillips cross head, it's called JIS. You might want to get a set of these screwdrivers. And for the rust remover, you can use phosphoric acid.
my uncle had a different version of this radio, he was in the marines, and being a captain he had this on some of the ships he used to be on, it also had a drum tuner and a fancy rotary dial that lights up with the piano selectors, the dial itself was printed on a cylinder and rotated with the drum, quite fancy.. even the accessories were quite interesting, it had a car adapter with the AC plug and strange proprietary audio gear. that was great work you did there I like your dedication and attention to detail, just like the Timpton way ;)
I've always wanted one of these "upper level" Sony portables. They were sold in the USA and occasionally appear on e-bay. But most US listeners found the smaller CRF-5100 and other less expensive Sony portables as adequate for their needs. The radio in the video probably receives as good or better than when new. Good job on the restoration!
I am really looking forward to these episodes. I have the CRF-160's big brother, the CRF-230B. Its not in the best shape but what a remarkably good receiver it is. The best one I haver had.
Espectacular receptor, de los mejores de su época. En los 80s he salido a hacer exteriores para LRA1 Radio Nacional Buenos Aires con un Sony muy parecido a este, hacía monitoreo a miles de Kmts sin problemas
Your repair to the holes on the side made me think to share a tip... You may know about using baking soda with super glue to create a "plastic" fill. I have seen a new (to me) super glue idea... Super glue drizzled on a cotton ball. It also makes a "plastic," which you trim with a razor knife. Stuff the cotton into the hole and squirt in the glue. Cheers.
Re coating with either zinc or chrom, would definitely make the metal parts look better, but the clear coat will protect them and prevent further rusting, and given the metal is not really touched, being inside, the coating should remain in tact.
Nice video and work, thanks. I was servicing one today that is from an old fellow of mine not here with us anymore. It also had dirty contacts in the drum tuner and all the potentiometers and band switches were scratchy too. Contact chemie 60 and DeoxIT did the job, but for how long I'm not sure yet... I applied the DeoxIT to drum contacts with a small medical syringe because it was not the spray model. Some of the contacts are in very hard place from the opening. I'll have to do the recapping also sometimes, but at first it was good to see that the radio is working.
Good eye 😊 unfortunately I’ve done that one already and there wasn’t much wrong with it. I decided not to do a video on that. Radiocruncher does a much better job on that one than I could possible do.
Buen video y bonito radio y muy sensible esos radios japoneses son muy buenos fueron hechos para durar muchos años dependiendo el cuidado que se les diera
At 1:37 I think you'll discover that the BFO is at the back, and RF Gain is the front knob. 😛 At least, that's what the nomenclature is showing. I imagine it was a hassle to clean the Band Contacts.
Nice job on the Sony, did the frustration of the alignment cause you to seek relief with your musician friends at your local watering hole. I'm curious, how many Guitar Pickup Booster have you fitted.
You just keep delivering great videos about great radios. After all the world radios you've done maybe it is time to revisit your 007 Philips or is it still to scary 😅
Beautiful over the years I have worked on a lot Sony products and a lot design and egineering has gone into them. the other company known for having bad capacitors is Panasonic .
Looks like this unit was kept in a damp environment unfortunately. "Out of the box" with nothing done it did perform quite well. I don't think you'll need to do much more than give this a good clean, and maybe some caps. Just cuirous. What is the impedance of your miniwhip? I noticed that AM/LQ/SW1 was marked high impedance, compared to 75 Ohm for SW2 and up. Maybe it could perform even better :) It's clever how they use the light globe for the meter to also light the green "AC" light. Totally unnecessary as obviously this would only be on when the radio is on, but still a clever idea.
The miniwhip is actually a little lower impedance than this radio would like to see on some of the bands. but still works very well. I believe it’s closer to 50 ohms, as I’ve used a balun but can’t remember exactly what I did at the time 😊
Very nice work, as always!! I have to agree, I don't think I like the way Sony have done that drum. When the lid came off it was not what I was expexcting! I guess it was fine when new but not at all easy to clean and maintain now. As you say, the Grundig is a much better system from that point of view. I was curious about the calibrator but I believe it just moves the dots from left to right. I initially thought it might be for doing a super fine tune or something. Nice result though and picks up well!
True, I much prefer the grinding drum tuning system. The calibrator is a strange thing. Still haven’t made sense of it. It moves about 1 cm either way.
As I can see this channel has run away from the original content. You are getting boring. We had enough of just lines on the schematic. Do proper diagnose like shangoo does show us what you do wen you do. We don’t want to se lines on schematics !! Also show us the work properly not just two seconds and then complain of copyright. We don’t like to se promotions, means you are money driven person, if it’s hobby kept it hobby and if people want to help they have patreon, the amounts of adds on you’re channel is bigger than the rest. Also stop mention David in your videos, you put a black dot on his name. This being said it’s time for me to unsubscribe.
Yes it’s a lot I do like, I’ve been watching hid channel for 4 years maybe more. What I’ve said it’s how I see the channel changed. I’m not happy with the “ new “ format and lack of trouble shooting wile we watch the process. Also I don’t agree with the capacitors “shoot gun “ method, show us wen you test them, don’t just assume if it’s old needs to be replaced.
@@123audio8 Excuse me sir! Who is going to leave the old caps in the unit which is from the early 70's if you have it opened up for service? Only reasonable thing is to change them all now before they get change to leak, even if they would work at the moment.
You need a T-shirt that says "I do not read the manual. I AM the Manuel" 😄
Anyways, great job on this restore once again. 👍
Should get one of those made 😊

Thanks Dave
So true !
really really well done and amazing machine
👍
Beautiful looking radio. Well done as always Manuel!
Thank you
This is not only a great looking radio, but it performs amazingly well! and, as always Manuel, you've polished this diamond even better.
👍
Nice work as always. Even over UA-cam, the radio sounds excellent, as you said.
Thank you
Another great restoration Manuel, very well done, totally enjoyed it !
Ahh, boot polish, thank you 🙂
Cheers

Yes, it does receive incredibly well.
Amazing unit
Sure is
Very very nice restoration 👍
Thanks
Muito top mais um ótimo trabalho parabéns…
Obrigado
Nice clean up, some don't take a lot of electrical work. but still worth the effort of a fix cosmetically .
👍
Very Nice I have a couple that came after. Great radios!

That’s a great radio. I should be receiving the ctf-320 soon, and am really looking forward to that one.

Yes, I’ve sued that on occasion, but here it would be tough to trim as the leather in the sides could get damaged further
Great work as usuall, just an idea : in very rusted parts you could also try cold galvanising paint instead of clear coat.
Re coating with either zinc or chrom, would definitely make the metal parts look better, but the clear coat will protect them and prevent further rusting, and given the metal is not really touched, being inside, the coating should remain in tact.
True. That would work well.

On elco recap which are your favorite brand, Panasonic, nichicon,rubycon,hitachi,elna...??
Nichicon and Panasonic FC. They are my favourites, and easily sourceable from Mouser.

👍 yes, some of the switch contacts are tough to get to.
Manuel there's an icf2001D at the back, will it be the next one??

Six so far
From 38:16, you hear a conversation between 2 Dutch radio amateurs, at the end on the 41m band.
👍
Great video. By the way, did you find out what the "calibrator" was for ? Maybe I missed it.
It’s just to let you set your own reference. Not particularly useful.
You just keep delivering great videos about great radios. After all the world radios you've done maybe it is time to revisit your 007 Philips or is it still to scary 😅
I’ve got it in the lounge, and do keep thinking about it. Must get it done soon.
38.39 bfo sounded dutch
Mr Carlson's Lab would have that radio tuned-up to perfection.
It is already. Just decided not to battle the camera to film the entire procedure.

how much did this restoration cost?
I see a Sony ICF-2001D (or 2010) in the background. Will this be restored next? I think that's the best portable shortwave radio ever.
No, I’ve completed that one as it had very little wrong with it and would have made for a very boring video 😊
I have a 2010 and would have liked to see it anyway.
Very nice radio, though it misses the 20 m amateur band (plus the 22 m broadcast band which wasn't invented when this radio was built).
I was sorry that the 20m was missing. Would have been good to use the BFO on that one.

Strange that the SW2-10 dial is reversed (high frequency to the left) compared to the other bands (high frequency to the right).
That radio is in Great shape normal were, I have 1 just like it.

Shame it didn't use the Double Balanced Mixer for better seperation.
I was friends with a guy that had one of these units but now that both owners are gone it is no longer available to me.
Must have been in the conservatory
