I bet one of those radios or TVs is still working 55 years later! Sony has been a synonym of quality for decades. The work of the Japanese people depicted on this video is truly inspiring.

As in all things, that statement is relative. Sony products aren't perfect an still operating , may have been repaired multiple times. The Trinitron table top T V I use to own a capacitor tin the vertical sweep circuit fialed 3 times. The first two repairs where done following the recommended hack, Mounting the capacitor in the back of the circuit board, where it would be subject to less heat. After the third apparent failure, I opted to get a newer TV, with features the old Sony didn't have.

In my experience, Sony equipment has to be repaired as much as any other brand. At least after several decades.
However, Sony has extremely good service documentation. Their service manuals are very comprehensive, and on the circuit boards test points etc are very well indicated. This makes repairs easier than with brands that (for instance) only have a circuit diagram available.

But Sony needs to go back to making it's own products - exporting manufacturing to China and other third world countries is a bad idea, as they don't understand quality control there..

I recently repaired a Sony ICF-5080 radio made in about 1973 (almost 50 years ago). The only required servicing was that the volume control needed contact cleaner. I did not even have to replace electrolytic capacitors (which would not normally be expected to last 50 years). Sheer quality....I use the radio every day....precision equipment.

Increased production output by 83% with no increase in defect rate! The tube assemblies were used in projection systems for commercial flight simulators.

Sony is the best. When the Trinitron TV first came out I compared the picture quality to others side by side and there was no doubt it had the brightest and sharpest picture I had ever seen. When the Betamax tape player/recorder came out I couldn't believe how sharp the picture was and that I could watch and pause a movie at home. Then came the Sony CD player. The first time I put on those headphones and listened to the demo CD I could swear I was in a concert hall. Recently I purchased the Sony WH-1000XM4 noise cancelling headphones. They block out all external sound except for what I am listening to. There are cheaper versions of everything but if you want quality Sony is worth the price.

I have a number of Sony reel to reel decks in my collection, with the exception of motor run capacitors they have had no electronic component failures. Sony manufactured their own transistors / diodes and used high quality components in their amplifier and power supply circuits. I have Sony gear that is 55 years old and still functioning properly with all of the original components, even capacitors.

As a matter of fact I didn't even know so know that this is the 75th anniversary of Sony the founding of it. And being over there in Tokyo Japan where their head offices now I see why. As a matter of fact I've got a radio here in the house a little transistor radio itself it's an amfm but basically it's a Sony and it works to perfection. Although I haven't used it very much but I still you don't think of it that way. But thanks for the narrator that told me all this I'm glad that that's all done. As a matter of fact I wonder if they still make a TVs anymore? Because I can tell you this much right now 75 years is a long time for Sony to be around!

Not even a scratch on the stickers that are 30 years old! It had spent it's last 26 years in a bag basically rotting away, and the only "damage" it got was being unable to play the tapes that were left with it, having refreshing errors at the top.

That is not a Betamax, it's a U-matic. The film was made around 1971-72

Issue No. 6 of the UK Official Playstation Magazine goes into a bit more detail than this and further back in history to Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo. I'm currently editing a video on the mag if anyone's interested. =)

Fantastic. I have a few of the products from this film in my collection, and they work fine still in 2018.

It's weird seeing curved Trinitron TVs. In the 80s and 90s the entire selling point of Trinitron vs. shadow invar was really the fact that they were flat.

Actually, that's not true. The point up to the late 90s was that Trinitron tubes were cylindrical instead of spherical, so one curved gradient instead of two. Real flat tubes were hard to get right for each manufacturer, and especially for Sony. It took them a few extra years compared to shadow mask tubes (from LPD for example who argually made the best performing tubes in the last days of the high end CRT up to their final bankrupcy in 2008) to get convergence and geometry up to standard on the large screen real flat tubes (their small screen tubes did fine in that department, but just a bit grainy).
