Excellent. As soon as I saw which songs you were learning first I absolutely knew Jim Pankey was your instructor, as he is mine. He simply the best banjo instructor on UA-cam.
I'm very impressed! I turn 50 in a week and ordered myself a Deering Good Time II last week as a birthday present to myself. I've been following Jim Pankey's channel now for almost two years but never did have a banjo to start learning. That all changes this year! I just hope I can be where you are in 30 days after 3 months! Keep it up young man!
Jim Pankey is a real good teacher but if you get the chance take a look at Eli Gilbert Banjo, he does something called 30 days of banjo and really breaks it down to a basic level. Its real simple stuff and you may not need it now and this comment being 3 months old but its worth a look I think. Good luck learning.
Deering Good Time II was my second banjo, a birthday present to myself and such an upgrade from my first banjo. It has such a nice tone and is really easy to play compared to my first. Hope you are having fun with it.
You are doing very well, and I am impressed at your progress. I just started to learn, yesterday and I'm 73 years young, I hope I can do as good as you. had a quick look at your channel you have come a long way. Thank you.
Nice progress, You get out of it what you put into it. There is no magic pill or potion. Keep doing what you're doing, it's working ... and if not, banjos make great kindling too!
Look how far you've come in just a month! You sound really good now. If I have to miss playing for 2 or 3 days when I'm working it takes me a little while to refresh my memory lol. You can really plant that right hand now. I still move mine around occasionally. I've got the Banjo In the Hollow tune running round my brain now as I'm learning it. Great video. P.S hope your mom's happy with me for being a subscriber. Those bits made me laugh.
Thanks so much Freda! I've been really motivated and been playing for 1-2 hours per day so that definitely had my progress accelerated quite a bit. I hope you can keep practicing, and never stop learning! Thanks for subscribing 😂😂!!
I'm a 45 year guitarist. Started finger picking classical before I could use a pick. I've wanted to play banjo since I was a kid but never had time. I'm looking into buying one and you inspire me to play. I am having trouble trying not to use my ring finger. I tuned my guitar up to a banjo tuning Just to practice the rolls, But because the guitar body is so big my hand will not let me anchor my ring finger. You're doing a great job and I have great hope for myself!!❤❤ I just subscribed. I'm 61.
I'm 48 and 2 weeks in on Jim's series I can play Cripple creek med tempo, just now moving to Banjo in the Hollar, no way am I ready for the other 2.....well done young man
I bought a Kmise too and started Sept 07th 2021,with zero musical experience. Progress is slow as I am disabled and unable to practice more than 30 mins a day broken into two 15 min sessions ;-) I love it and so far never get frustrated. Great to see your progress , keep going, good luck.
Nice job! I wish I could revert everyone who ever told me they just couldn't play music to you. Apparently words look like lies when I say things like it just takes practice.
Very cool video When I was looking to expand my knowledge on banjo, I had a friend show me a song called "devil's dream", good melodic banjo tune. Bill Kieth is someone that would make your jaw drop!
Man wild I got my banjo about 2 weeks ago and have been lax in picking it up I played bass in a reggae band for about 6 years a decade ago so I got it as a challenge this definitely shows how much you can progress in a short amount of time guess I need to challenge myself a little more each day lol
I loved the video and subscribed (let your mom know! lol). I am inspired and encouraged by it. My 5 string Deering banjo is on it's way to me next month and ill be watching your videos plus Jim Pankey's videos among others. Great job!!
You just taught. Many perdue and want to race to the desired outcome but dedication and consistency are what traits are required. Is it a passing notion and you run to the music dealer but the object in your hands is not so easy yet you want it right now! This is the society we have been brought up in, take a pill for everything. fast food and have you ever witnessed someone lose it having a ten minute wait at the drive through but are to lazy to cook? There is a point you may think you can"t progress but remember how you started and what you were willing to give. Nice progress.
You’re pretty cool. I started learning about a couple weeks ago. You inspired me to keep going at it. It can be a little disheartening at times, but this video really made me feel better. How did you mange to get so fast so quickly?
Thanks so much, Im so glad you enjoyed! I'm a bit late to respond but better late than never I guess? A few factors played into my fast progress, for one I had a foundation of 2 years playing the guitar with a small amount of finger picking, I also was extremely motivated to practice and had a lot of fun doing it, and thirdly, I would just practice a lot. Some days I would play for 3+ hours just having so much fun, and I'd say on average I would play 14 hours per week. Being excited to learn and having a burning motivation to practice definitely helped to get me where I am now.
Amazing... I'm trying to learn banjo myself. I'm confused as to learn clawhammer or bluegrass style. What was the first steps that you took and video tutorials that you used? I'd love to follow your footsteps and learn that fast.
Thanks, I’ll give the Metronome Beats a try. Maybe it will help with my speed. I’m only 2 weeks into playing but my speed is behind where you were at that point. All the teachers say to use a metronome for pace. It would be nice to meet up with other experienced banjo players, so I may do that as time goes on.
Given me some inspiration. I bought a Banjo 2 days ago an thought what the hell have I got into. 😂 I'm a bass player. After watching this I think I have some hope. Good luck on your journey. 👍👍
What metronome app did you select? Thanks, and keep at it I just subscribed. I’m in my second week, playing “Boiling Down that Cabbage” and starting “Cripple Creek”. When you are looking down at the floor during practice are looking at tabs on a sheet, or just looking at nothing and only concentrating?
The metronome app is called "Metronome Beats" on the play store but really I think any metronome app will do the trick. Also when I look like I'm staring at the floor, I am actually staring at my picking fingers and the banjo strings. This is a habit I am trying my hardest to break, but at the time of this video I was always staring at the strings 😁.
BS! You either knew how to play another string instrument or this was done much longer than 30 days. I just started and after one month my cord finger finally don't hurt. Also try to play without mistakes is almost impossible.
Would have been more impressive if it were actually footage of you learning. It is however a same day video with a few changes of clothes and a couple things moved around in frame to give the appearance of a “different day”. Notice the items within the room. A few “obviously noticeable” items were moved around, while other “not so noticeable” items seem to stay in the exact location for nearly 4 weeks. Items that would move don’t, and a few items that have no reason to be moved do.
wow... just a buzz kill having to point out flaws and be bummer? regardless of how or why... still fun, helpful and informative for most people. What's your specialty? Unless you're a hacker with proof of your allegations of same day video give the guy a break. items moving or not is hardly relevant to anything... maybe he's so passionate about learning his banjo and/or just busy in general that his environment hardly changes... regardless your review has no relevance for those of us wanting and looking to learn ourselves.... 🙄
Excellent. As soon as I saw which songs you were learning first I absolutely knew Jim Pankey was your instructor, as he is mine. He simply the best banjo instructor on UA-cam.
I agree 100%
Dude, you just made my day. I've been playing for two years and it absolutely thrills me every time somebody says they want to, too!
The banjo is definitely a fun instrument! I'm having a blast learning it and have no regrets about choosing it!
That's great to hear! You are in good hands learning from Jim Pankey, and I wish you all the best with your progress!

Happy belated Birthday

Just bought a banjo and you are a inspiration!❤
Nice progress, You get out of it what you put into it. There is no magic pill or potion. Keep doing what you're doing, it's working ... and if not, banjos make great kindling too!
Haha! I hope this banjo doesn't become kindling!
I’m impressed. Just got my first banjo today at the age of 42. Hopefully I’ll be as good as you

I love Him Pankey!!! Awesome job!!!
Really nice job! You’re doing great!
Edit: lol your paragraph was funny
Thank you very much!!
Very nice. I’m sure Jim would be proud. I too have been using Jim’s banjo lessons.😀
Thank you! His lessons definitely are top notch

You sound awesome! I'm trying to learn banjo, too, but you're way better with it than I am.
Excellent! You can be proud of yourself!! Keep up the great playing!! You are gifted by God!
Thank you so much!!
Awesome progress in just a month! Keep it up!
Ive also been playing for a month now. Nice progress. Keep it up.
That's pretty sweet! Thank you for watching man!

I’ve just started and it’s frustrating because my banjo is old and wonky. This is fantastic progress!
Keep it up' Earl and J.D. Crowe would be pleased. I've played since 1967.
Go for it! Just practice daily.
genuinely impressive
Your video is very motivating. Thank you for your hard work!
Nice job! I wish I could revert everyone who ever told me they just couldn't play music to you. Apparently words look like lies when I say things like it just takes practice.
Great job! Jim Pankey has so many helpful lessons and videos, I have found him to be great helping me to learn.
Great job!! I also follow Jim Pankey. Got my banjo 30 days ago. You're doing better than me. Lol
Glad to hear you are stating too!! Just keep on practicing and you'll be surprised where you'll be in another 30 days!
You picked it up a little quicker than me, but it's super fun playing the banjo, and I've never really been good at playing any instruments
Very cool video
When I was looking to expand my knowledge on banjo, I had a friend show me a song called "devil's dream", good melodic banjo tune. Bill Kieth is someone that would make your jaw drop!
The comment you made about subscribing around 1&1/2 minute marker worked😂
About 30 days for me as well. Jim pankey my online help he's great. Also learning foggy mountain as well.
Man wild I got my banjo about 2 weeks ago and have been lax in picking it up I played bass in a reggae band for about 6 years a decade ago so I got it as a challenge this definitely shows how much you can progress in a short amount of time guess I need to challenge myself a little more each day lol
Those little frustrated moments are so relatable 😆😆😆
Keep on pickin bud 🤙
good tenacity! Wish I had been able to start at your age with the current tools available. Keep Going kid, you have great potential.
KILLING IT BRO 👊

I’ve played for almost a year and I love playing doggy mountain breakdown
Very cool, brother.
Rock on man!

Thank you! I believe in you!
Good job dude. Did you play any other instruments before starting?

Foggy Mtn. Breakdown on day 25 -- just jump right in there!
Hört sich nett an, also schön am Ball bleiben !
one thing I always wonder when seeing these vids is................. not how many days but how much time each day did you invest in learning?
What metronome app did you select? Thanks, and keep at it I just subscribed. I’m in my second week, playing “Boiling Down that Cabbage” and starting “Cripple Creek”. Is the channel in the description the only one you used?
How long were your practice sessions?
what for banjo do you have?
How many hours every day did you spend practicing
It varied quite a lot depending on the day, but it worked out to about 2 hours per day on average
Thanks!
What kind of banjo did you get
Bro did not change his socks
If you need some free 1 on 1 lessons, hmu. I could facetime you or something.
RIP this guys channel 💀
Cripple creek
Too scared of you telling your mom
1:15 please don’t tell your mom, dude.
Uh oh, I think I see your mom coming around the corner.
