I was here! With my mother and grandmother, railfans all. My grandmothers brother was an engineer on the Crusader when she was in steam and shrouded. My grandmother was also a graduate of Reading Hospital's Nursing School, before moving on to Community General, where she would make Head Nurse. She used to tell me about how Reading trains would fly through town, and you'd never wait at a grade crossing long. In the days of steam, she remembered seeing double a triple headers as a matter of course. On this trip, I was 7 - and I loved every minute of it!
Thanks Rick! With all the steam locomotives around me, from both the Reading and the Pennsylvania, when I was a kid, what was I thinking when it came to those Rambles! I made sure in 1991, the very last year the 2102 ran, I was going to get as much of it running as I could. Twenty some years later, I'm glad I did.
I know Colorado has a lot to offer in railroading and it's close to UP's Wyoming operation where the steam engines are stored and serviced and the Big Boy is getting restored.
Wow, that's fantastic news! I don't know why there hasn't been more publicity on it, but I'm glad to hear somethings' being done. 2100 is under restoration in Ohio. Who knows? Perhaps we can double head them sometime maybe at Steamtown's Annual Failfest. If NKP 765 could come in all the way from Indiana, I'm assuming it wouldn't be impossible to get 2102 and 2100 there for a special event. I'd also love to see 2124 run again and NKP 759.
Got my ticket for 2022! Taking my father with me. Going to be one heck of an experience! I never thought id actually get to see 2102 in person. I just wonder what whistly shell have! lol
It wasn’t so much about this trip, but by September - look at my Reading T-1 2102 Iron Horse Ramble to Schuylkill Haven (1991) - she was leaking pretty bad. Charlie was getting afraid to run it anymore. He could barely look out the cab and see the track ahead because of the steam. She needed to be shut down, and they finally did the following month, for good.
+Jacob Woods 2102 had to run tender first one direction on the BM&R and on the Emmaus line and Pottsville, Tamaqua, etc. I last rode behind 2102 from Emmaus to Pennsburg in Sept. 1991. RBMN no longer leases that line since 1995, it's East Penn now. I don't think NS would let them transport the 2102 and coaches from Belt Jct. to Emmaus Jct. now anyway. Friction bearings have been banned from interchange since 1994. So that run was a one time deal on the Emmaus-Pennsburg line. 425 pulled the Perk branch trips from 1992-1994 and I believe 1990 as well. I just lost a grandmother, she was living with her son in Emmaus, and she will be buried in Tamaqua where she was born. Emmaus, Tamaqua, two towns that the RBMN had/have track in. Most likely, 2102 will now stick to RBMN owned trackage only. That probably means no off line ventures to even Steamtown. They would have to use NS to get there from Taylor Yard to Scranton.

Nice video. I took a ride on that when I was a kid, summer of 1961. Still remember it, the video brings back some good memories.

Another awesome video of this locomotive in the 90's!
I sure hope 2102 runs again some day. Took many rides behind it, including a trip to Harrisburg back in the 80s. Always a most enjoyable experience.

+g bridgman Actually, Reading 2102 is gonna run again sometime in 2017! She's undergoing restoration right now!!! :D

Still has quite a bit of work left, but she got steam up one day and is looking good so far!
Is the 2102 is going to be back in steam in 2020.
She’s returned to steam in 2021.
@@brianfalzon6739 oh year, it will return to steam this year ( 2021 ).
What Happened to 2102 after this excersion

I wouldn't consider it for good considering the RBMN is restoring the engine AGAIN
Did they turn 2102 at Tamaqua? If so how, was there a wye there then? With the old L&NE interchange possibly? Or did they return tender first?
Return tender first.
Wow that must have been an impressive sight, a mighty T-1 running tender first.
I posted a videotape (Reading T-1 2102 Tender First) here on UA-cam exclusively showing Charlie Kachel running the 2102 tender first.
I shall be sure to watch it.

I spotted a goof look at 4:38 and guess what it is.
The hooter whistle on the T-1 was so deafening, the video camera's microphone would cut out to protect it.
Gregory D. Pawelski No it’s the business car on the wrong end of the train.
Oh, and that too! LOL!
