- Reading 2102 at work on the Blue Mountain & Reading/Reading & Northern railroads from 1988 to 1992. The first sequences are a Shoppers Special enroute to Norristown, PA. The balance of the video is coal trains from 3 different trips. Some of this footage is duplicated on other programs I have done, but I re-edited this to put all the 2102 clips on one video.
Incredible work! I love seeing this engine in action. Nice to see some of the "older" generation of railfans publishing their vintage stuff to UA-cam.
a mesmerizing iron horse indeed, it'll be a treat to see her running again
Wonderful to see an American steam locomotive being worked hard without diesel assistance. What a shame it is such a rarity nowadays.
+struck2soon well Reading and Northern are working to bring her back so thats a plus
+Dylan Ruppert certainly is! Let's hope they don't run it with a plethora of stinking diesels "assisting"....
well they may add their new GP30s but they may only be on there when needed but hey at least they're bringing back a piece of RDG history
+struck2soon well RBMN GP30 might help or their SD50s
2100 is also undergoing restoration by a consortium in Ohio. Maybe we can double head them some day!

I love these 4-8-4s. They are close to the top of my list as one of my favorites
Me too
A working T-1 is a sound delight. Love both whistles but the G chime is just marvelous.
The ol' iron horse actually pulling revenue freight in the late 80's-early 90's; just nothing short of amazing to see!
At 20:14, Chairman and CEO Andy Muller right at the throttle of 2102.
He has done pulling two coal trains including, the forty loads of Anthracite and eighty-three empty hoppers for the anniversary of Schuylkill Branch and Navigation Company.
Beautiful shots, amazing scenery and locations. And I absolutely loved the little red caboose at the end of the freight train there. Simply amazing and looking forward to seeing more!
Fantastic clips, as always.
With the RBMN announcing 2102's restoration a day or two ago, maybe we'll see something like this return in a few years.
First fireup in 23 years was done earlier this year so it won't be much longer
One month away!
And she's back!
I love that they added the Reading caboose at 17:12. :)
Surprising that such a large and modern loco should have a single chimney! Fascinating.
Nigel Terry Most late US steam was single chimney, UP FEF 3 4-8-4s being a notable exception?
Always nice to see the T-1 at work, thank you. I look forward to her being rebuilt and under steam next year. To me anyway the real gem of the four surviving RDG T-1's is 2124 spending her days out in the weather rotting away. If anyone had thoughts of restoring her, they'd better get to it, at some time you reach a point where it can't be done. Who knows? Maybe it's that way now. Very sad imho.
I agree. The 2124 has roller bearings on all axles.
That coal drag....N&W 1218 did something similar with 100 *empty* hoppers, but 2102 was dragging a loaded train IF you took away the Conrail marks on the hoppers, and repainted the tender correctly to RDG, it would have been 1950 again for a few minutes.
Interestingly, I've read that although they were mostly too late for World War II, the Reading T-1s handled troop trains for the Korean War or at least the postwar occupations. So those first couple of clips with the passenger cars are pretty close to 1950-ish too, apart from not having a bunch of uniformed servicemen aboard.
Nice footage especially the 88 shoppers trip! Guys I really doubt 2102 will have diesels with her. She can pull everything Andy's got coach wise by herself. She might need 425 for Locust Summit with all his coaches but that's about it. She can run for Tamaqua hill so she should do that with flying colors by her lonesome.
I would LOVE to have been in the cab when those conrail diesal engineers saw a Real Iron Horse!!!
That was a great video., Thank you for posting. I've ridden behind 2102 many times including an excursion to Harrisburg some time back in the 80s, I think. It's supposed to be operational again by next year. I'm looking forward to that.
Looking forward to having 2102 back on home rails and under steam!
@100235671872948007740 Yes, it's happening and will be a glorious moment. I hope it can visit Steamtown next summer for Railfest. It would be nice to pose it with 2124 for a photo shoot. I'm sure that could be arranged.

@@keithhazlett4274 Huh?
Love to see one of these old locomotives hard at work
At the film's beginning, this is the straightaway at Glen Gerry - the brick plant is on the right. Behind to the right at the top of the hill is the OZ Gedny foundry. Beyond that - was my home.
2102 is being repaired I can’t wait to see it
You and the 10,000 others who will be lineside on 2102's first run. Myself, I'll be watching for the drone shots on UA-cam with no people in them. Just can't stand the crowds anymore. And don't get me started on the driving habits of steam chasers.
fmnut I know a lot of people do that I just wait at crossings with my dad and it’s so annoying when we get stuck behind a steam chaser
You should be able to shoot 2102 in March doing shakedown runs on coal trains once again!
It's all fun and games until you see 15:55 and realize 2102 is pulling LOADED hoppers! What an engine the T-1 is!!!
T1s were the pride of the Reading and I can't wait for 2102 to be fired up again though it has taken time to do so
The rythmic sound of the smoke has me chilled, love it
She's officially back on rails as of last week
2102 just woke up a few days ago. She’s alive again.
Whistles Sound So Ghostly! P.s The Video Was Good!
Wish mainline steam excursions operations will just come back to life under steam again in the future! It's upsetting how they aren't like this anymore, not even on NJ Transit, Septa, Amtrak, Norfolk Southern, CSX and/or even in the United States and Canada.
Actually septa let the New hope railroad run 40 up around north Wales 2 years ago and they have plans to do it agajn
Great video Man...
Now it back for train rides for the 21st century
Number 2100 and 2102 are getting steam again.
First the 2100, and maybe, just maybe we'll try to make it to the others. But would be quiet the job, only time will tell.
It seems like a smallish Niagara class but what do I know...
Great footage
Thanx
Yes, Reading's 4-8-4s were on the smaller side of the size scale for that wheel arrangement. Most roads called them Northerns, Niagara was an NYC term.
@@fmnut Thanx man...
Maybe just maybe I ain't slipped off the deep end quite yet
The 765 was able to run without diesel help on the Lehigh Gorge trip so the 2102 should be able to as well. I think NS should just sell their line from Allentown to Hazelton to RBMN then the 2102 could run a trip from Allentown to Pittston with open window coaches. They wouldn't be able to board where the 765 trip did, though, they would have to board near Canal Park in Allentown if RBMN would ever get that line. NS already sold the Can Do line in Hazelton to RBMN, why do they still need the line to Allentown? RBMN could own it and give NS trackage rights like the line north of Old Penn Haven.
+Rob Krasinski I totally agree, If CP and NS merge then I doubt anything will be sold to the reading and northern, we can only hope the merger never happens because NS's game plan involves selling some 1500 miles of less profitable trackage. Only then do I believe it could happen.
Since NS owns most of Conrail's territory following the latter's demise in the late '90s, including former Reading territory and the Lehigh Line, I'm sure that NS will allow 2102 to occasionally operate on their territory in Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey.
Reading and Northern has enough of their own railroad to run it on, no need to pay NS through the nose to run on their lines.
Well, we got 765 on a special trip with NS last year that departed Bethlehem, PA and went to Pittston and Jim Thorpe and return also using RBMN tracks. It was my first time riding the rails between Bethlehem, Allentown, and Jim Thorpe. I never rode any of the 2102 trips to Jim Thorpe (or anywhere else) over Conrail in the 1980's. I was on that trip because it might never happen again. I doubt very much that 2102 will use NS tracks or leave RBMN property again. RBMN's coaches are unsuitable to run on NS. NS's new steam excursions used more modern coaches with sealed windows and roller bearings. If I have to go to Tamaqua or Port Clinton to board a future 2102 excursion so be it. 425 is running this month from Penobscot to Jim Thorpe and return with the Mountain Top Rotary, they did this trip in July, 2014. Unlike 611, 2102 is not roller bearing and NS probably wouldn't let it on their tracks.
Who said that the 2102 would use RBMN coaches on NS territory? And RBMN could install roller bearings on her. Several Reading T1s were in fact built with roller bearings.

A Reading 6 Chime.
JacksonAndLansing Railroad And reading Hooter.
0:30 does anyone what what kind of whistle this is on 2102?
As answered previously in the comments section, a Reading 6 chime passenger whistle.
@@fmnut sorry i didn't know or looked in the comments to find myself
@@fmnut that doesnt sound like a 6 chime that sounds more like a reading 1 chime hooter
@@atsfevan0242 at 1:45 is a reading 6 chime
@@Sano_Kiyoshiro the first whistle you hear on the video is a Reading 6 chime. To hear a comparison of both Reading whistles, watch my 2102 on the Perkiomen video. 2102 had both types on those trips.
wait, is the hooter or the 6 chime her original whistle?
The hooter was the RDG freight whistle. The 6 chimes were used on passenger engines.
@@fmnut that wasn’t my question
@@fmnut which one is 2102’s original one
@@amtrak_121 ok, I'll rephrase my answer. Since the T1's were originally freight engines, and the hooter was the Reading freight whistle, logically, therefore, the hooter was the original whistle.
@@fmnut ok thank you
Someone lay o. The tracks
Hello, I am planning on making a documentary on the reading T-1s and I would like to know if I could use the footage seen here? I’ll give proper credit
Feel free to use whatever you need.
fmnut thank you
Reading T1 4-8-4 2102.
How many loaded hoppers did she pull?
I think it was around 50 cars that time. They did it a couple of times.
@@fmnut Wow, pretty good for a solo T-1!
@@09JDCTrainMan they were designed to haul a 10,000 ton train from St Clair or Tamaqua to Port Richmond solo with the only assistance needed being a push up the Falls grade. So a 6000 ton train was well within 2102's capabilities.
@@fmnut Oh cool!
120th video like!
Make sure Conrail6370 a.k.a. Leonard F Shaner Jr doesn't try to copy and steal this .
How am I supposed to do that? If he copies it, so be it. I frankly don't care who uses my videos, if I did, they wouldn't be on UA-cam. I think people who get all riled up over copyright issues in amateur videos need to calm down. I'm not losing any money out of my pocket, nor any sleep over it.
White flags: An " extra "?
Norman Jaquemot Just for show. Under NORAC rules class lights and flags have no meaning.
Usually here in Canada, CN trains with white flags on signals an " extra ".
Norman Jaquemot it used to mean that in the US also, but those rules were phased out in the mid 80's
We kept them here in Canada though.
Norman Jaquemot In Canada Timetable & Train Order operation (where flags and class lights have meaning) was superseded by Occupancy Control System in 1990 with the adoption of the Canadian Rail Operating Rules. After that, white flags in Canada were just window dressing as there was no longer any such thing as an "extra" train.
