I used nearly the same technique to help a frind of mine with his forrest.
With a little script, whos orrientating all the trees to the camera automaticly, we made a environment with over threethousands trees, using not even vray:

If you are interested, I can share the script with you.

I'm using Vray 3.4 for rhino, and when I use this technique, the background of the tree on the 3dmodel goes away and the sun creates the correct shadow. but then when i press render, the background goes back and the shadow becomes a square again.

Hi. Your tutorial is super helpful--I haven't been able to find anything else like this. However, I'm using Rhino 5 and the settings aren't quite the same. The problem I'm having is that the image doesn't become transparent. Do you think you could suggest some probable solutions for this issue?
    Thanks in advance!

Other than to make sure you have the render display mode on I am not sure how to help, sometimes you might have discrepancies when using certain graphic cards. if you have the chance try doing the same on another computer just to make sure you are not missing any step of this process! I hope this helps!
