  • Jello (and Yam) play Signalis. This is another installation of CLEAN SCREAMS, the ongoing donothon where every time a horror game successfully scares Jello, he donates $1000 to help clean up the ocean.
No game has ever successfully scared Jello. Because horror video games aren't scary.
Will Signalis be the one to prove him wrong?

8:53 you know for a man willing to drop $1k for a scream, you'd think Jello would just bite the bullet and get a new controller

I love that these consistently raise over $1000 because it leaves some suspense even when watching the vod!

I mean the thing about *good* horror is that jump scares are never what get you nor are what you’re there for. Suspense and unease are what you’re there for, and suspense helps a lot by knowing what’s about to happen. Because in a game especially, you know about when it’s going to happen and approximately what it’ll be. But the wait is what gets you.
That’s the main purpose of horror. To give a sense of unease and unsettle you. Scares can do that, but they’re cheap that way, and if you use them too much they lose their value. That’s why the best scares are well telegraphed. Because that’s how you *earn* them.
Unfortunately, depending on who you are (Jello for example), unease doesn’t… unease you that much. Meanwhile I get unsettled so easily something slightly creepy happening with no scares is too much for me. It depends on the person.

And on the other end, you have people who can’t handle building unease at all (like me, who had to stop playing Portal early on because my nerves were so consistently shot that I couldn’t perform the required puzzles out of jumpiness).

Ah, Signalis. A game I love, but can't play. Too many rapidly flashing lights / images. Which is a shame, because cyborg lesbians are right up my alley. And existential mind trips can be good, too. So I'll just be keeping this video in another tab, podcast style.

I am also a stick haver. As a kid I used to bring home cool looking sticks because pretend swords and/or they were just cool and then just kept them. I just recently got this REALLY cool stick that I've been pretending is a claymore sized sword. Also there's the stick for hitting pinatas that my brother keeps next to his bed. Sticks are great.

Really fun to see Jello finally enjoy a horror game and then also be reacting much the same way most people do especially in regards to the shotgun. It really hits that this game knows what it's doing when everyone I see play this game reacts to these moments the same way.
I do also love that signalis gives you the solution to the water pump puzzle because they realized it would still be really hard with a guide lmao.
It's a bit of a shame Jello got sick of menu-ing using the keyboard as quickly as he did because while it sounds like it sucks, at least with a controller I never had any trouble with it and that would've probably made the puzzling less frustrating at least.
ough the bossfight... Jello not noticing Myna is invulnerable when the reticle has a cross on it and also not noticing boss rooms offer more ammo... it's interesting I suppose because when I played the game I just always immediately got what it wanted me to do but I guess one person's intuitive isn't always another's.
And like fair enough that even if you play the Myna bossfight correctly and get it done quick that it still wouldn't be a good boss by Jello's standards.
To end, this was fun I hope you continue to have fun with Signalis!

since Jello mentioned he tends to look at horror games with a game designer lens, i think he'd maybe like Greener Grass Awaits? Very weird horror game (it's a golf horror game) but i feel like it's pretty neat design-wise, antagonist is also like, human-adjacent and not eldritch IIRC

Sooo ehh the museum was about concentration camps in middle Europe so it was basically non stop dread but what got me the most were the drawings made by children and under it was their name, date of birth and dead and the worst part.
Where they either wrote that they survived or the name of the camp they y'know... and man my eyes kept slipping to that last part being filled with endless dread with a little droplet of hope

Does Jello ever find out that aiming and waiting for the square to get small increases damage?
I mean, I get it, it took me a while to find out, and he's streaming, which takes a lot of attention. But man, my heart aches seeing Elster waste ammo, you know?

It’s a nice little mechanic that can really emphasize “oh shit” moments; you get used to taking your time and 2/3 shotting them, which really emphasizes those moments when you’re surrounded, don’t have time to aim, and just gotta mag dump and pray.

About the survival horror boss rant, the final boss of this game is actually pretty fun. Granted it doesn't really have much to do the games mechanic and falls into the shooty shoot shoot formula but the way you have to fight it is actually quite fun. But yeah I agree it's rare to see a survival horror have good boss fights

Honestly love what i've seen of signalis, it NEEDS to do a better job telling you things, it has people and npcs who can and should tell you those things, even like a short tutorial vhs just to be like "hey, pay attention to your reticle, X mean you cant damage, and if you wait for it to focus you do more damage" even if it breaks the spook a little at the beginning, letting the player know that means alot, idk maybe there was a note jello just happened to miss or something

I wish I could watch games like these without them being edited down. I've already watched ManlyBadassHero's playthrough and after it NitroRad and a couple of video essays and I really love all of it. However in a long form like a stream? I can't. Too much back and forth and I'm not fond of gun shooty gameplay. Anyways I hope you loved this game regardless and maybe got to finish it/watch a playthrough on your own time. It's incredible, the existencial dread it fostered in me lives eternal.

“ARAST TWP204N UIE 09HUN 9WW2” is as much as I could make out...it’s clear code but it has been a while and I am loosing my hearing. 😅 So the validity of the code, I can’t fully validate but it is what I hate the most...nonsensical code as far as I can tell. 🤨

Hello Jello, I believe people with albinism generally prefer being called a "person with albinism" as opposed to being called an albino. I have read that it depends on the individual, but I do know that some people find being called an albino to be offensive.
