- In this video I show how to do a cranking No-Start diagnosis using only a $3 test light.
Be sure to visit my friend Oz who is a professional mechanic (unlike me, obviously!)- at his UA-cam channel here: / azasepul23 - Авто та транспорт
Thanks for putting driveway diagnostics videos up. It seems that with your video the only way crooked mechanics can rip people off is by NOT telling the customer whats really wrong with their car.
Hi Matt,
I have the exact same problem with my Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 Twin Spark.
Does not start, the fuel pump makes a noise but not the usual I used to hear.
Your video just reminded me of what's going on with my car.
No fuel coming in, just a tiny bit of fuel, not your usual spray.
Man, you ROCK!!!!! Your channel should be renamed the REAL MECHANIC.
Percussion Test was the best. Great video!!!
Logically reasoned and informative. Thank you
I'm glad your channel popped up on my feed. I'm also a limited do it yourselfer, recieving constant criticism from others to just "take it to the mechanic". With limited funds and 4 cars constantly breaking down, I'm forced to become the "designated mechanic". I have a new diy fire under my ass, thanks to your vids!
I learn more here than in the 5 year working as a technician. We need more real teachers like you.
I agree Marcus. Retired mechanic and college shop teacher hear, but you can never stop learning. He makes great video's

Your damn way to find out if it's a fuel pump and filter, is if one is to think, 'because of a precise time of failure, and when it runs 'intermittently', sometimes great, up until anti drug law protesters or Green Party protesters, organized crime syndicate and or NRA, KKK, BLM protesters find out what your doing', 'Using alien government satellites these people of the Roots Of All Evil are gonna shut down this high payed for car, in the most inconvenient times'; one would know it's a fuel pump or fuel filter.
This attitude, way of thinking, overwhelmingly, is obviously tormenting the users, when a filter takes out a fuel pump, a bad fuel pump. That's for sure.
Perhaps in the nearby future demented alien governments will zap your cars, but one will know the difference. That enemy will destroy the cars for everyone.
Except in the case of Dr. Bloomberg and them unwanted evil people who like to hurt us on a personal side.
Then everybody's gosh darn Gone In Sixty Seconds.
Except for if one has a 😮🎉early model Mercedes Benz. 🦜🦚Steal one of those. 🌵🌵🌵
I was gonna say the same exact thing. Beat me to it.

This is a great video. The little quirks that had to be dealt with like proper ground meant everything. These are the buggaboos that dog an amateur like me. That was as impressive when you you pulled out the power probe. GREAT STUFF!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your video! You really explained to the benefit of even a novice in car repair. Keep it up!
Love the new "Load Probe!" and all of $3 ... thanks for the video,Best regards
That bashing on the tank trick has gotten me out of the weeds before when I had a fuel pump on its last legs. Driving around with the rear seat removed bashing the crap out of it with a hammer at the stop lights as it stalled constantly under no throttle on the way to the mechanic, good times!
Very comprehensive troubleshooting. Details diagnostics. Real interesting. Anybody that can't appreciate this type of troubleshooting can learn alot from this video. It's also great for sifting out bad connections the major culprit in a lot of this.
Thanks for noticing!
That's cool that you're respectful to your neighbors, and don't make a lot of unnecessary loud noise at night. I try to teach the same thought process to some of the younger kids I work with. How it's not fair to work past 10 p.m. when you have other people that live close by.
Great advice, that initial lack of ground a good shout..
Thank you Matt. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I knew nothing about mechanics and over last year, especially this video has came in quite handy, I've learned to do my own work off Your videos
Way to go Michelle I as well have learned so much from these videos and I have been working on engines for over 50 years
but these newer vehicles are proving a tough challenge even for seasoned mechanics
👍
Thanks Matt restored my interest in true science.
No tail lights no signal lights 2003 2500 dodge pickup
Love your videos and the way you teach. Need more people like you to share/spread the knowledge. Very grateful to come across your channel
I appreciate that! Glad you found me!!
Nice dieggnosis with just a test light, thank you teacher,God knows we need to listen and learn👍🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Thanks for watching!
Nice support for OZ. That was classic. I truly enjoy your methodical approach to diagnoses/diagnosis? Anyway, great video and a good reminder to always check your test equipment. Thanks for the lesson.
Great video as usual.
Thank you for sharing.
So much packed into this. I gonna go back and watch it again...and again!
Yes sometimes it takes a few viewings before is sinks in.
hey so I just wanted to say great job on sharing with us. you did so in a way anyone can understand and learn. seriously thank you!
Excellent video. I enjoyed your humor. You are an excellent teacher. Very helpful for average joe like myself. Confidence inspiring
Another great diagnostic video.
Test light is the king! I use it more often to diagnose broken toilets! Please do video on evap!
5:30 Would have immediately removed the air intake, sprayed either some starting fluid or brake parts cleaner (carb cleaner? Either one I suppose, heard BPC is more atomized, evaporates quicker, not sure if that is true or true every time but this sticks in memory,) really good amount like spray for 5 seconds, see if it runs off of that. This of course will tell you if there is spark etc, if going int he direction of fuel.
This is my first comment perhaps ever but, Mr. Schrodinger, I really like your channel and I presently have a Corolla in the garage I am letting a lot of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) soak on the pistons for a very long time, for no reason really. Compression numbers when warm (I know, I know, but. Still) were 188-188-192-190. Car runs mint. Love your channel and I look forward to interacting more.. you have a channel for we intelligent folks.
I knew a parts changer once and it just didn't work out.. Had to tell her, "I'm done."
Hello GHT. Do you still have the Corolla?
@@coollasice4175 Yes! Still got it. Was going to maybe start putting it in videos on my channel soon...
dont you have to watch what you spray on those delicate MAP sensors
Shraeder is much quicker.
@@flightofthefatman What if your line doesn't have a shrader valve?
I love this channel massive mechanic swag hats off to u sir...
Thank you, awesome video.
Best damn troubleshooting video on the web
I figured it out at 16:17.
Love your channel
Good video matt and not a high tech bit of kit in sight. Good for us that dont have a big budget
You are most definitely the man I love watching your channel learn more from you then going to school!!!
Thanks for the compliment. I hear that a lot from people in tech schools. Glad to help you guys get ahead!!
Matt, again great work , the best tool ever is you brain. ;)
Regards from Spain my friend.
Merry Christmas Pablo!
Merry Christmas Matt for you and your family i hope you have a great Christmas.
Good video Matt thanks and glad to see you have a big following, please keep the videos coming.
common sense wins every time, thank u for the good work!
grinzzz.. until I turn around and shamelessly flaunt my new Oz t-shirt🤣
Thank you very much for this great idea. I’m a single mother and five months pregnant and I don’t have a whole lot of money coming in but I do have a test late. Since the car won’t start I can’t drive to Harbor Freight to buy a multimeter and couldn’t afford the $150 deposit to borrow a fuel pressure checker set up from O’Reillys therefore I thought I was out of luck lol. This message just saved me a lot of stress and extra time and money.
Hey there! I think you are great teck, It's really nice to know that you have a channel. I've seen a few of your videos and have learned a few tricks and I want top say thank you for your knowledge. I have become a subscriber.
Thanks for subscribing and enjoy the channel!!!
Hi there Mat, enjoyed the diagnosis, it makes you understand the circuits logically, especially without the wiring diagram
Thanks Typey! Yes it was way faster to just map the circuit than to look up a diagram!
Type y1
Thanks for a video using tools anyone can afford!
Nice quick logical diagnosis Matt!
They aren't always quick but they are always logical lol. In this case it happened to be both!
That was awesome... at the end, .you gave the guy a solid..
PowerProbe and Test light have their uses indeed! Nice troubleshooting with those tools.
Actually could have done the definitive diagnosis entirely with a power probe only if you think about it, but not with a test light only.
Happy ending. Percussion test goes in my notes. Tanx for the video. Thumbs up.
the realm of the "hammer mechanic"
Very good information 😎
Lol that was great the neighbors helped you push the car nice
excellent.. smart and logical.. what I like.
Great job!
Good morning thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge thanks some much
Thanks and Merry Christmas my friend !
Very good demonstration my friend thank you very much for your very valuable time like always excellent teachings
You are very welcome
Very good test
This is good. Thanks!
Thanks brother, have a great year 2024
Thank you!! So far it’s going well!
I love your videos they are really nice 👍
New subscriber here , as a DIY maintaining 3 cars in the family I thought my next move was to buy a scanner , which one I do not know, great to see a simple test light and a your FASTTEC method will take care of so many problems , learning so much , thanks for sharing !
Thanks for the sub!
Dude your the best thank you
I’ve watched it seems 100s of vids but you brother far exceed them all. You know your stuff. Soooo thankful I ran across you. Had to sub just no way around it.👍👍👍
Thanks so much!!!
1 of the main tools since I was a kid test don't guess light 💡I was 1 of Dr.0's 300 subs..time marches on!!
A good video.
Thanks.
Missed you man :)
Good diagnosis.
great video. thanks
Top work
Wow! Good informative video. I will definitely use your pay channel you are a genius!
lol I don’t know about genius but I can assure you the pay channel will make you able to do exactly what I did on this video and you’ll be confident you’re not going to damage anything.
Hi Ali Ur cute I subscribed to you :)

Great to have a working relationship with neighbors.
Indeed it is!! I can see where they'd get pissed with the air tools, tow trucks, and absolute jankity cars always outside my house in a nice neighborhood but they are very supportive especially when they know most of it is for charity!
Good job
Nice and simple
you are a superior at diagnosis.
Thank you! Its my passion!
LOL. Oreillys dropped by and gave us all one of those head lights the other day. We had good luck with them....well, I saw everyone using them for a while, I mostly use a magnetic light, but I'm happy it's in my tool box.
Brah, amazing video. Much Mahalo
You sure have awesome neighbors!
Yes I do!
I knew it. My car had a po340 code and before I even replace any sensors, when I try to start it it sounded just like this. There was an actual time when it started but then shut up. So I just did what the code said and replaced the sensor and the wiring and still no start. I kept saying that Obd 2 scan tool is wrong about the P0340 being a camshaft position sensor. Because this video confirms that my fuel pump went out I don't even have to do a diagnostics check cuz I already know. Your video helped me out.
thanks Matt
you are awesome .. i really enjoy your videos
Domo Arrigato!!
Thank you for this nice video
Thank you!
Lol love the integrity
Very good job you doing very good job
Nice video 👌👌👌👌
Very good teaching 👌 👌👌
Great job thanks
Ye have no shame, as always love your videos and knowledge
Man you are good
I have this same issue with my 2002 ls 3.9l, my replacement sending pump located on the driver side is due to come in tomorrow, have already checked the fuses as well as the relay and replaced, battery is new, so next option would be the sending unit as I was told the passenger side unit has already been replaced, and these pumps are rated for 10yrs/150k, good looking out on the diagnosis and being sure of the issue, hopefully this will stop me from spending money on unnecessary repairs.
"Your basic bitches are gonna say, check the fuses." Ah that had me rolling. 😂
Good ...info..thanks
Thanks man
“Of course your basic bishes gonna be all over me” 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for making me spit coffee all over my keyboard and monitor..You caught me completely off guard. When you turned around and I saw Oz Mechanics and phone number, I completely lost it...Oh my GOD, that was so funny....I love watching your video's....Thanks again...
Hahaha, Gotta keep 'em on their toes ya know!!
That caught me off guard as well. I loved it. Matt you're the best
You do good methodical. work. I wish I was your neighbor. Now I have a crank no start with my 2002 5.4L F-150. lol
FP is around 35psi. It will occasionally fire up if I apply slight amount of throttle before turning the key. Once it starts, it runs fine.
I would do a fuel trim analysis when engine is running to check for lean condition especially under load. if so, address fuel pressure.
@@SchrodingersBox Will do. How does applying 1/8-1/4 throttle, before turning the ignition, affect starting in a EFI vehicle other than letting in a little more air flow? It certainly does help, although not every time, start my truck.
There are several reasons for that including the possibility it’s not a lean condition problem- maybe the throttle body is dirty so the IAC is not allowing enough air when starting. But for a lean condition it might be the slight throttle application induces a higher injector pulsewidth to allow more fuel at startup but without throttle being open too much to still lean it out.
you are just like McGyver! you will soon be able to diagnose with a pen knife and a match stick! Man I would love a shameless plug! great video Matt!
Better yet how about i come to Pitt and we diagnose that car with the poor performance that probably has a rats nest growing in it by now.
Well I would be all for that but you still have a 4 hour ride east from from Pitt but you are always welcome and I have about 4 vehicles with codes that we can look at so no shortage there. So anytime my friend!
We'll talk....
Sounds like future videos! :)
I saw an episode where he noticed a 12 hp Kohler engine smoking and running like the choke was half-way on, MacGyver pipes up "Hey, looks like you've got a busted piston there!" Pulls the engine apart to reveal a broken-in-half connecting rod, then uses some coins (usually made of Nickel, a different metal) held in the alligator clamp of some jumper-cables to arc-weld the aluminum halves of the connecting rod together. I was disgusted, it isn't a compliment to refer to any mechanic as "MacGuyver"
Great video! I'm trying to diagnose my 4.3 GMC Sonoma and I've had similar issues. We thought it was the fuel pump at first because I couldn't hear it when I turned the key, but after looking it turned out the coil wasn't getting a spark. Traced it to the fuse box and the ECM fuse was melted! We could barely get it out. After replacing the fuse the fuel pump engaged and I can start my truck and drive it but after a while the fuse will blow again. I've got no idea what's going on or even where to go from here.
What amperage is the pump drawing? You need to start there for sure.
I think he was a Siamese cat in a past life . MEOW !
I’m very happy to follow you Matt, such a great teacher. Actually...the best teacher of all time, buddy!
Thanks my friend.
The Quantum Mechanic comes through
Matt Matt great video

Nice work with the test light! If you have not already and your vehicle is more than 10 years old, upgrade your AAA card for the free 100 mile tow. Diagnostics are great but you still need to get a broken down vehicle to a repair shop/mechanic.
Yeah I always do my best to try to save the customer any fees with towing etc but at the time there was no way I was getting under the vehicle in my suit lol. Towing was only option!
I thought about carrying tools. Realized that I cannot carry all the possible repair parts too. So, unless it is a battery jump start or changing a flat tire the vehicle is getting towed. The AAA upgrade to the Plus Membership for about $88 annually with the 100 mile tow will save your clients $$$. I believe you have to be a standard AAA member for 90 days first to qualify. The road side visit was good moral support though.
Great video my dude! Clear easy to understand, wish you lived in my neighborhood I'd take my caddy to you!
oi, great video!!!! and I ain't even finished it yet!
All with a test light ,even pushing the Schrader valve 💪
Hahaha you noticed!!! Indeed that is exactly what I did at the field call too. In fact the owner thought it was a special tool just for that purpose hahaha.
Schrodingers Box Lmao 😂
Killer funny. :)
what does a constipated Schrodinger mechanic deal with stuck poop? Works it out with a test light
Nice diagnosis. BTW, my daughter says you look handsome in your new Oz shirt.
The clothes make the man lol
Sometimes you can take a rubber mallet and bang on your tank and sometimes that fuel pump to start working sometimes
Having an issue with no crank, no start. The lights are nice and bright and all accessories work. Then after a couple of tries cranking it starts like normal, runs and sounds normal. The battery was replaced, went to Autozone and they tested bay, starter and alternator they came back good. The car did code with a p1399 misfire. I was wondering if the starter relay, cylinder or spark plugs, fuel pump or ignition switch, to start diagnose. The oil is maintained. I did find that I needed a cylinder coil due to rough idling about a year ago. This was an Acura TL 2001. Your insight much appreciated!
what data do you have?
