As others have said, this doesn't suggest a good defence and you might just be scoring more to win more points. The results need to show how many goals were conceded using each setting
Hey, thanks for the comment. A number of people have said similar so I addressed it in the pinned comment under this video.
Good test. My suggestion would be to run the test as an underdog team against better opponents. That's where human managers need the biggest edge they can find, and it would be interesting to see if aggressive defense still ends up being the clearly optimal strategy.
Great work
Good morning Stybb. Great Video once again.
I’ve struggled with high defensive line so I thought about this a little more, and I think the player attributes play a key role here.
If everyone has 10, then a much defensive line is the best option.
But in Football Manager, not everyone has attributes of 10. Some players have less, some players have more.
I struggled in the lower leagues of Scottish football because of a high defensive line and I was only able to find success when I played in a lowblock.
Yo @DarkHorseFM2023, lovely to see you. I totally agree, and it's something I'd like to look at when playing against stronger teams, does the same system work?
Have you factored in the pitch dimensions? They do tend to impact the teams & could this play a part in the trapping settings. i.e. Trapping outside on your home pitch that is set up for narrow tactics?
nice video...The best
Interesting video. Two things; 1) player attributes are equal not stats, 2) I may have missed it, but on the settings section I saw that you looked at the difference each setting had i.e., trap inside/outside, but did you also test with none of these settings on?
1) Very true, bit of a slang term on part part but appreciate it can cause confusion. 2) Yes I performed tests with those settings not on also, their performance fell inside the range of the other two in almost all cases.
Interesting stuff and enjoying the approach. Two comments, though.
1) The emphasis on points gained doesn't really answer the good/bad/best defensive setting question, as such. I would like to see the goals against data for these as well as or instead of the points gained to understand the impact of these settings defensively.
2) Obviously the equal teams is very useful, but sometimes we are faced with better teams and so an "underdog" league where the other teams are better than the test team would be a very useful addition. Obviously a lot of work, I accept.
Hey, thanks for the comment. A number of people have said similar so I addressed it in the pinned comment under this video. In addition for 2) I agree! a number of people have spoken to me about this and this is something I plan to test in the future - how to defend against stronger teams.
Subbed 👍
In FM you don't have same players between the teams. You can have slow defenders or the opposition strikers are prime Usain Bolts, so it's better to set defensive line deeper. Also have you tested how the instructions correlate with mentality? Playing on attacking and setting everything like you say might be an overkill and less efficient
hi i really like your videos but i feel like judging defensive performance by points aquired isnt the optimal way to judge which setting works best
Hey, thanks for the comment. A number of people have said similar so I addressed it in the pinned comment under this video.
Hey guys, I'm going to add a comment here since a number of you have raised the same point, which I didn't address in the video, so my bad about that:
I wanted to look at the overall contribution of the defensive settings to a team's performance. Naturally any change in these defensive setting will affect both the teams goal scoring ability (by pushing higher up the pitch and winning the ball and creating chances) and their defensive performance. It's all well and good having a defensive setting in which you concede 30 fewer goals a season, but if it's also reducing your goal scoring by 50 goals a season, it's not a very good tactic.
That being said, after another look through the data there is a linear correlation between points scored and goals conceded, I think there is more I could do here. If there's something genuinely interesting in this I can address it in a later video.
Thanks for all the input, really appreciate you taking the time to respond to the video..
Thanks for the clarification. Thats a good point and much appreciated
Can we have a study of simming in comparison to playing the match somehow?
It's true that we are making an assumption the two are the same. I can put some time into testing it, though it might take me some time to get through the 1500 games a single experiment run takes me if I have to play them all myself!
Meta meta meta
It really is!
Using a high press is overpowered and boring.
Agree to some extent. It would be nice if low blocks were a little more effective in a balanced match
