- In this episode of the Wide Awake Podcast I spoke to ex-gangster, Turner Adams. We talked about life behind bars in one of South Africas most dangerous prisons, Pollsmoor, where he spent over 18 years. We also talked about growing up in the Cape Flats, his tattoos and much more.

you have big ears ...
Ey josh just wanted to say I love this video ❤️ haven't been prouder of my grandad❤️❤️❤️🥺
Really enjoyed this. What a cool guy who's been through so much. He reminds me of an old friend here in Aotearoa.
Wow your got big ears man
It's the amount of honesty for me.
This podcast hit on alot of crucial points.(Points which need to be unpacked in our families, communities and the society at large) What I had in mind though the entire time was :how can ex gang members stop this bad cycle of gang recruitments, will gangs ever come to an end? With that being said, I still have hope. Turner had to learn to be tough and learn to kill his conscience but he was able to unlearn those inhumane characteristics. This is beautiful.
Well said, he was able to unlearn those bad habits. I have faith that change will come one day
It's the unlearning that is the individuals choice, and I think it's a hard choice to make because people are scared of the unknown. They are scared of who they'll become if they lose "this" self. It's painful.
He lied about a lot. He doesn't understand a lot of his tattoos, he was forced to get a lot of them & he was used as a "book".

Amazing ✊✊👏🏻👏🏻
Brother I absolutely loved this and your previous episode! I am an art director, graphic designer & animator. I want to cook up a banner, logo & possibly any other elements you need. What's your mail so I can help out where I can.
@@bradleynaicker8052 hey, that would be awesome. My email is joshwideawake@gmail.com
As a Jong mother and a former resident from Lavender Hill.. all I can say is that its very very tough to live in lavender Hill.. especially for young children having to go to school in the morning and they be shooting the kids panic they don't know where to run or even where to hide.. it's traumatizing even when your at home watching TV or cooking or even just sitting around and you hear shots being fired you have to lay on the floor cause a lot of people and children got shot of bullets coming through the walls or windows.. it's a terrible thing really ..please pray for the people that live there 🙏
That moment when Turner told Josh, 'You are a lucky man" when Josh told him he almost went to Pollsmoor prison.
These people are so absurd. Theyre always lying. Some rich j 3w ish kid like this pretending that he Almost Went to Pollsmoor! Do me a favour. Their little media tribe lies for a living..
My brother was sent to Pollsmoor maximum prison for ten years, he went in with brown hair that turned grey within 6 weeks, I can't even begin to imagine what he went through, he never spoke about his life in prison.
I hope he and the family are doing ok under the circumstances 🙏 💛
Bro got his insides touched about grey hair
@@7eVen.si62 word is he turned trans and now has a vagina
Not everyone has it hard in prison. It's not always about you being punked if you aren't a punk. People will try you but you must fight back and make it known in the beginning you are not going to be played with.
He probably wasn't tough
My friends from Lavender Hill are some of the nicest people I've ever met. One thing I noticed is that their street smarts is unmatched. They would foresee situations and act accordingly. Myself, I grew up around the Parkwood area, rough as well, but so many success stories. I encourage people not to always believe the misconceptions about these areas. It's tough, but most of the people are lovely human beings who give despite not having much, who care about the community and have big dreams. Really enjoyed this podcast.
Yes, true. They have beautiful, and of the nicest personalities, man! 😃
Yoh bru I'm just here next to parkhood here in elfindale salutas

Guys like Mr Turner Adams can truly make a change in our communities,I feel it's not to late for this man to walk into his purpose and make a massive difference
It's true because he had to go through all. Of this for him to find his calling to make a change in others. Lives.
Word!!
Nee dankie!!! My kind sal nooit hoor ban die stik kak nie
Wow. I have respect for Turner. Some of the opening words : I was from district 6, I had to move , and I couldn't adapt, i couldn't adapt to Afrikaans. This is a good man at the end of the day.

Every kid who thinks crime is cool should listen very well here!
I once walked passed a car parked along the road in Belgravia Athlone and He was sitting in the car. When I saw him I got such a fright 😱. Seeing him on this channel really opened my eyes to never judge anyone without knowing them.
👏👏👏
I also walked pass him & another guy in a mall once. Both looked scary looking, but I ofcourse recognised Turner immediately. Watching this interview opened by eyes too. He is very wise, and well-spoken.
Incredible pod, man. Always found Turner to be such an interesting character. Keep up the great work!
I am impressed with the Guest's (Mr Turner) English, very good and when he said that he reads books. It all made sense. God bless this man to change lives of those behind him to not fall in the same trap✌. Thanks to Tiktok for introducing me to you Josh

Not a single dislike. Props to u Josh, we couldn't ask for a better host
Seems like there is a dislike now.. someone who doesn’t appreciate good, raw and real content

This was a really good interview! Appreciate the insights shared. Much respect for Mr Adams!
Just watched the start of this and I already knew where this is going. As someone who lives 5 to 8 minutes away from Lavender Hill I can agree to all of this. An amazing Podcast!!
Man this is one podcast that I wish was way longer! This is great! I really hope you keep doing this and maybe do like another 2 hours lol
I'm so glad I saw this videos, it's such important issues we face in society...coloured and black boys and girls for into generational cures over and over without even knowing it. I'm so glad it's being spoken about I'm sure it'll open eyes to the reality.

One of the best interviews I have ever watched, by far. I could listen to Turner Adam's speak for hours, I think.
Fucking incredible. Nothing beats seeing people overcome such great obstacles and still have all the time to smile and chat about how they've turned their pain into lessons and love. Great chat guys
I couldn't agree more. Great comment. 👍
A wake up call for kids in my area,I wish I could share this with all the kids growing up as they really believe with some of their parents that gangs is the only way out, glad you showing them that there's more to life👍 wide awake

This is the first pod cast I have watched and it was amazing

this is such a beautiful podcast and there is a lot to learn from here thanks Josh 😁👍
I love the bond, the mutual respect! Turner's intelligence is the first thing I picked up. He is not playing the blame game but he is owning up to his part in all that's happened to him and he going towards living a life of a role model he didn't have. How he's passionate about kids and the future is quite outstanding. All the to the best both of you. #respect

The interview is mind openning....keep up the good work
FANTASTIC, thoroughly enjoyed this episode
Raw content 👌... we need to hear 👂 and more from this channel 👏 🙌 🙏
Interviewing is a skill and being able to guide Turner in relaying his story in a Sequence for the viewer to be able compose a picture of the story is your job, i feel this was a missed opportunity to learn about his journey as it was all over the place With answers interrupted, let him finish what he was saying lol
(just my personal opinion)
I agree
Facts
Couldn’t have said it better
☝Agree. Bit frustrating actually
Eish
Pay attention people. The man said he was addicted to getting hurt. You can see it with the tattoos. Bless the man. Learn from the man.
They're also sex addicts....people with tons of tattoos. Yet they deny it up and down the "street "
Wow I'm impressed by hearing such wonderful words coming from both Josh and Mr Turner, God bless you all. It's never too late to repent, if you're going through such things, seek God's help and you shall be saved.Keep it up and good luck Josh.
Thank you for sharing your story Mr. Adams. Great interview. Doen jou ding! It might have taking you long in the darkness but you have stepped into the light and making right wa jy sleg gemaak it. "We are only human afterall"
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!
Great podcast and well done! I love that Josh has given us an opportunity to hear stories like this. Thank you for taking the initiative. This truly was an amazing interview all in all.
Just felt Turner Adams was a little cut off at times and wasn't able to flesh out his thoughts completely at some points. Totally understand that enthusiasm and passion could be the reason why Josh tended to cut Turner short at times but the interview would have been that much better if we got a chance to hear all of Turner's thoughts fleshed out. Im no hater just want this podcast to succeed so Im thinking a little constructive criticism wont hurt :-)!
Great work none the less. Praying God continues to use Turner! Keep up the good work Josh. I see you as SA's Joe Rogan! Liked and subbed!
Amazing story. I hope more kids from these communities can learn from him
Absolutely loved this podcast. God bless him on his journey of change
Amazing podcast well done! Definitely subscribed! 🇿🇦🔥
My main dealings in Cape Town were with the Scorpions OG at the Akker. While we knew that doing crime was wrong we also acknowledges humanity. My CT family grew exponentially because of the community we were trusted friends.. Where the cops failed (geez, that was a scary evening) the Scorpions stepped in and acted as mediators. The outcome wasn't a face meeting with the Young American but an apology from them, delivered by King himself. What a man he was, what a man. We are alive today because of his total commitment to successfully negotiating for our lives, on our behalf.
What an amazing man. Bless him, and you Josh, great podcasts.
I think we need another episode of this!!!!!!!!
Keep spreading awerness great episodes and I am looking forward to watching more of yiyr videos
A truly touching story. A reflection of the society that the poor Black and Coloured people live in South Africa
why are you making this a race thing?
True bro, Fact👈
@@andrebotha5684 but this is a race thing. White people don't really suffer from these types of things.
@@andrebotha5684 because IT IS a race thing.
@@andrebotha5684 Because IT IS very much a race thing! He literally says in the beginning, all his problems started when he had to leave district six and go live in the cape flats created by whites back then, this was obviously as a result of the group areas act during Apartheid.
What a heart felled message Mr Adams and Josh...thank you. iI am also a testimony of survival and overcoming a dysfunctional family and community growing up in the platteland. Me also originate from district 6 but my grandpa and some of his brothers decide to make the platteland they home. Salute from Italy masekind...
I am inspired to continue and seek positive change in my life. I'm so happy I came across your KSB podcast on tiktok
Awesome interview Josh.. I think a larger emphasis on the guests opinions and views would be more intriguing.. I loved the nitbits of your story, and I would like to hear all about it sometime... But when I clicked on the video I wanted to hear all about Mr Adams...
Please don't take this as being rude, it's constructive critism and I want to see your channel grow
I can listen to this man for days.. loved his no beating around the bush, say it like it is delivery...reminds me alot of my late father, absolutely straight talks, curse words included,..Glad that this man came full circle. Well done Josh on this interview. 💖.
🙌 found this podcast, that it's a South African channel. Great content
your videos are so raw and real, I love them. Well done :)
Thxs For the interview both of y'all
This was mindblowing. One of my favourite podcasts ever!
This pod is so interesting- im a 2nd year social work student. Before clicking on the vid, seeing the thumbnail, i felt discomfort. 5 Minutes laet, realised this guy is not bad. Keep it up!
I love this content. Please continue forever.
Great, honest interview. Ever consider interviewing people that were given amnesty during South Africa’s truth and reconciliation act?

Glad this popped up on my recommendations and I really enjoyed
W video
I found your podcast yesterday and I have watched so so many episodes already I haven’t watched the first one yet but what you said about you coming from a good family and having a good life and yet you still ended up doing drugs and in jail and how are those kids supposed to have any chance in life, I totally understand what you are saying! I have been clean for 14 years now and I’m a mother of 4 kids and I came from a good family and all that neither of my sisters did what I did but they are human and have had their own issues as well but now that I’m a mom well I’ve been a mom for almost 18 years now, times have changed so so so much and I see that my kids have a lot more to go through in life than I ever had to, I know what led to me being on drugs and I do everything in my power to make sure that my kids never feel the way I felt no matter what I go through in my life my kids know they can always talk to me and tell me anything and everything even if they are in trouble because they known I will make them take responsibility for their fuck up but they also know that no matter what I will always have their back and I tell them always your human your gonna fuck up but you got to let go of those fuck ups learn from them and move on
honestly this helped me to understand how tough and rough things are
Great content ...The world is not prepared for this raw energy
Thank you for this 😊
I could listen to this guy for hours... Let's hope you get him back sometime. How do we 'follow' Turner and all the work that he's doing?
Josh I don't even think you realized how deep it was when he told you you're a lucky man.
That's the title of the Movie of one of the most notorious gangsters in the Cape. In the end he wasn't that lucky.
Great content dude! Keep it coming
