  • In this episode of the Wide Awake Podcast I spoke to ex-gangster, Turner Adams. We talked about life behind bars in one of South Africas most dangerous prisons, Pollsmoor, where he spent over 18 years. We also talked about growing up in the Cape Flats, his tattoos and much more.

It's the amount of honesty for me.
This podcast hit on alot of crucial points.(Points which need to be unpacked in our families, communities and the society at large) What I had in mind though the entire time was :how can ex gang members stop this bad cycle of gang recruitments, will gangs ever come to an end? With that being said, I still have hope. Turner had to learn to be tough and learn to kill his conscience but he was able to unlearn those inhumane characteristics. This is beautiful.

    • @britneymaiC

Well said, he was able to unlearn those bad habits. I have faith that change will come one day

    • @russelngcobo7531

It's the unlearning that is the individuals choice, and I think it's a hard choice to make because people are scared of the unknown. They are scared of who they'll become if they lose "this" self. It's painful.

He lied about a lot. He doesn't understand a lot of his tattoos, he was forced to get a lot of them & he was used as a "book".

As a Jong mother and a former resident from Lavender Hill.. all I can say is that its very very tough to live in lavender Hill.. especially for young children having to go to school in the morning and they be shooting the kids panic they don't know where to run or even where to hide.. it's traumatizing even when your at home watching TV or cooking or even just sitting around and you hear shots being fired you have to lay on the floor cause a lot of people and children got shot of bullets coming through the walls or windows.. it's a terrible thing really ..please pray for the people that live there 🙏

My friends from Lavender Hill are some of the nicest people I've ever met. One thing I noticed is that their street smarts is unmatched. They would foresee situations and act accordingly. Myself, I grew up around the Parkwood area, rough as well, but so many success stories. I encourage people not to always believe the misconceptions about these areas. It's tough, but most of the people are lovely human beings who give despite not having much, who care about the community and have big dreams. Really enjoyed this podcast.

Just felt Turner Adams was a little cut off at times and wasn't able to flesh out his thoughts completely at some points. Totally understand that enthusiasm and passion could be the reason why Josh tended to cut Turner short at times but the interview would have been that much better if we got a chance to hear all of Turner's thoughts fleshed out. Im no hater just want this podcast to succeed so Im thinking a little constructive criticism wont hurt :-)!

My main dealings in Cape Town were with the Scorpions OG at the Akker. While we knew that doing crime was wrong we also acknowledges humanity. My CT family grew exponentially because of the community we were trusted friends.. Where the cops failed (geez, that was a scary evening) the Scorpions stepped in and acted as mediators. The outcome wasn't a face meeting with the Young American but an apology from them, delivered by King himself. What a man he was, what a man. We are alive today because of his total commitment to successfully negotiating for our lives, on our behalf.

Awesome interview Josh.. I think a larger emphasis on the guests opinions and views would be more intriguing.. I loved the nitbits of your story, and I would like to hear all about it sometime... But when I clicked on the video I wanted to hear all about Mr Adams...
Please don't take this as being rude, it's constructive critism and I want to see your channel grow

I found your podcast yesterday and I have watched so so many episodes already I haven’t watched the first one yet but what you said about you coming from a good family and having a good life and yet you still ended up doing drugs and in jail and how are those kids supposed to have any chance in life, I totally understand what you are saying! I have been clean for 14 years now and I’m a mother of 4 kids and I came from a good family and all that neither of my sisters did what I did but they are human and have had their own issues as well but now that I’m a mom well I’ve been a mom for almost 18 years now, times have changed so so so much and I see that my kids have a lot more to go through in life than I ever had to, I know what led to me being on drugs and I do everything in my power to make sure that my kids never feel the way I felt no matter what I go through in my life my kids know they can always talk to me and tell me anything and everything even if they are in trouble because they known I will make them take responsibility for their fuck up but they also know that no matter what I will always have their back and I tell them always your human your gonna fuck up but you got to let go of those fuck ups learn from them and move on
