  • Most hams are not familiar with HF, VHF and UHF slot antennas. John, W6NBC, will discuss his research and development of unique small HF/VHF/UHF slot antennas. Most of John’s designs make great efficient stealth antennas. John, licensed since 1965, was in the technical side of broadcast television, principally for KNBC channel 4 Los Angeles, Ampex Corporation in Redwood City CA, and Sony Electronics in San Jose, CA, as a technical instructor/writer. He has written many articles for QST covering different subjects. This past February, John won the QST Cover Plaque Award - given to the author of the most popular article in each issue.

Dear Sir, you have solved one of the historical problems in the field of antenna that has never been solved before. Great work.

    Electromagnetic Greetings!
Watching a lecture by the master John Portune (W6NBC), is an immense joy. I recently contacted him by email to talk about how happy I was to find the article he wrote about building an artisan duplexer. I'm going to buy the book to gain knowledge and as a way of thanking him for his great work on behalf of HAM.

Great presentation! Thank you, John! I have been a ham for 44 years, and interested in electronics for about 65 years, but this is the FIRST explanation of a slot antenna that I could follow. Now I understand how and why of the various slot antennas construction articles that have been presented in QST in more recent years, many of which were written by John! It is like a veil has been lifted and I can see! --Mark, KE6BB

In the early 60's a good friend of mine worked for Decca in the UK.. He worked on the Decca navigator, specificly a base station and antenna in the South Atlantic.. The idea was to use one of the minor Falkland islands as a slot antenna...

    Amazing presentation.
On the note of not using a tuner at the rig with coax feeder, what about a tuner at the rig with parallel feeder?

I tried to make this very antenna from the article in QST. I didn't have a good experience with it.

Hlo Sir i hv just imagined using a 40 foot 4 inch pvc pipe erected vertically & using aluminum tape to make the Slot along the vertical length of the pvc pipe , the 40 foot high pvc pipe can be guyed with parachute Cord for support & stability, as you stated a vertically erected slot Ant radiates horizontally making this type of Ant an almost noise free Ant, what about this Sir !!!???

Awesome. Thanks ! Except for slot arrays in radar panels, I had not previously considered slot antennas. I watched a few videos on UA-cam about them, but your presentation helped me the most. 73's

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
On the subject of the Double DELTA Slot antenna; If size were not so restricted and in a permanent application would there be any benefit in super sizing it?
ie. Having something on the idea of a 16 to 24 foot cross section and whatever complimentary hight increase might coincide?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you kindly
    Gary

People have got in the habit of relying on 20m…. Sad that they don’t watch online SDR or WSPR for when it opens… but the FT8 crowd are buzzing usually.
