I recently went shopping fully prepared with my sizes in cm but then felt like a fish out of water when this store had everything in shaku.
I like the designs of your yukatas! They look like scales or chainmail links. I can't walk in a straight line to save my life so I might walk funny in a yukata.
I have a question, is it rude to bring your own yukata to a Ryokan? I've been researching traveling in Japan as a larger size and some sources say to bring your own yukata if you don't think you'll fit the average Japanese sizes but I am not sure if this would appear as rude to those running the Ryokan. It's a fear for many plus sized individuals.
I was wondering the same thing, as I expect I would special order a larger size Yukata, before travelling, to bring with me since I' almost 6'6" (197cm) -- so I wouldn't expect hotels to have anything that would fit me... Same issue with shoes [and slippers for indoor wear) since I wear between size 17-19 US Shoes [so I'm fairly certain I would never be able to fit in the provided hotel footwear] -- and actually my biggest fear travelling to Japan would be the loss of my shoes at some point
RE: Getting up from tatami - There are many people who are unable to get up off the floor the way you demonstrated. There must be an alternative method for those who cannot roll up form their toes.
I'm curious too about this. Considering that a majority of foreign guests may not be able to ( Hi, I know only people who can't), how would getting up work??
Tomoko's demonstration is so proper, elegant and cute at the same time. Shogo is doing a better job than many men, but I guess men or even samurai were more relax when they wear yukata in the old days. Social expectation different between men and women, may be?

Shogo I bought a hakama with the coat and belt some years ago, I think it’s time to get it out and try it on again I use to practice with my samurai sword and do iaido sorry for the spelling jajaja 😜
This is a great video and very informative. I find myself struggling when my wife and I go to ryokan or any events that involves us wearing yukata or kimono and sitting on the floor because I have am unable to bend one knee because of an old injury. This leads to everyone else sitting properly around the table looking great and me laying out sideways with one leg sticking out of my kimono looking a bit like a drunken oni. Any advice for changing that? 😂

Having traveled with other Gaijin or foreigners I have seen some gaijin use binder clips or clothespins to hold their yukata sleeves up while eating. I am not saying that this is acceptable. I have watched the wincing expression on the Japanese host or workers faces when they see a binder clip or clothespin on the sleeve.
What if you'd need to run or be more agile? Options? Another thing I was wondering if you'd like to go sightseeing farther away would you switch into a kimono then (if you'd still like to wear traditional clothing)?

I randomly got curious: In western clothing, they usually put a logo slip, or some flap/tab with washing directions, at the neck or a seam down the side. Where do japanese dressmakers put them? I... haven't actively been looking out for them, I'll admit, but I thought I should spot them even through the UA-cam machine.
Kimono wouldn’t have them. If it’s a silk kimono it’s best to take it to a kimono cleaner because it / cleaned in a very specific way while polyester kimono can be tossed in the wash as with other poly clothes.

Leave it to Japan to make a strict ritual about how to put on and wear you pajamas! (By the way I am not talking 💩, I am a huge fan of this channel and I love Japan and japanese people and am fascinated by Japanese culture! But being a foreigner it is very confusing to me why so many rules and such ritual has to go into how you wear your pajamas!)
Yukata isn’t just a “pajama”, you do wear it outside around the ryokan, to bathing places and even to summer festivals. These methods are simply to make sure it doesn’t look too sloppy and easily fall off, same with how you’d tuck in a shirt, roll up sleeve etc
I have spent thirty minutes trying to follow but you go way too fast when explaining the knot. Plus being the same color on both sides, it's extremely hard to see what you're folding and what you're not. I'm not going to be able to make it to the onsen on time because I am trying to get the belt right. 😢

Currently staying at a ryokan and now I feel ready to try the yukata!

Yeah, you must never wrap your robe sash around counter-clockwise. The entire estate of world may come undone!

Can you keep the Yukata you get from the Ryokan or are they just borrowed for your stay there? Kinda like bath robes in western hotels.

Tying an obi seems a lot like tying a necktie.
The Woman Yukata has a lot more to do just to wear perfectly then the men 🙂😊
