It's finally here. A new year, and a new episode of Network Decay. It's the 2nd part of the History of SYFY. This time it's the SciFi Channel in the 90's.
Thank you for the incredible video.. If only we could go back to falling asleep on a saturday night to those classic channels in the pique of 1996 again 🙏
Let’s demand Sci-fi Channel go back to the glory days. It is nice seeing more horror related shows being produced for the channel. Let’s hope they are good.
I couldn't agree more that The Anti-Gravity Room was ahead of its time (and would've fit in perfectly on G4). The biggest draw to the SciFi Channel for me as a teen in the 90s were The Anti-Gravity Room, those Planet of the Apes marathons, reruns of The Bionic Woman, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Incredible Hulk (superhero stuff was popular, but still kinda nerd fodder back then)...and of course, the LEGENDARY Saturday Anime! Good times, man.
The original Sci Fi channel kind of changed my life. I was on vacation at a cabin with my family and they had cable. Between 3x3 Eyes and The Prisoner, my mind was blown; especially seeing as the insane finale was the first episode I saw. Television is just not the same and I don't think it can ever be again. :(
The SCI FI channel was scary at times. Remember changing the channel an Their was a guy in a scary grim reaper Suit looking at the screen. Scared the life out of me.😱 Don't get me started when it went off the air or the creepy clock.
Fantastic video. I stumbled upon this while looking for the crazy pre-rendered pre-SciFi Channel graphics and weirdness they aired 24/7 on the channel before it became.. a channel. I was 10, and my mom was wondering wtf I was watching on TV. Tried explaining to her to no avail. Anyway, great history lesson on something I adopted Day 1 as a kid. Even though I never like Star Trek or Doc Who, I loved all the weirdness this channel gave me as a kid and got me in to SciFi in various forms. Oh also, I grew up in Portland, OR (but have lived in SoCal since 2005 now) and we had the weirdest Cable Access channels. Look up “Jim Spagg”. Weird damn dude but showed titties for free on Cable Access in the 90s. Can’t unsee it to this day.
@@Productions-mo6bs Your scifi videos are so informative and I imagine it was very time consuming gathering all the clips for the different programs. I specifically searched for history of scifi channel and stumbled across your video because it's the only one on the internet I could find. So please continue to make more of them. Personally for me I'll always remember the scifi channel for the reruns of tales from the crypt when I was a kid but now since I'm older I've discovered the shows like Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, & I'll definitely need to check out farscape and sliders based off your vid.
Thanks, hopefully it wont take another year make part 3. If you're looking for more scifi to watch the first two seasons of Sliders are really fun. Farscape is great, and it's streaming on Amazon right now. If you haven't seen Babylon 5 make sure to watch that as well.
@@Productions-mo6bs I'll definitely checkout all three thanks for the info 😃. You ever see Perversions of Science that was a show that was like tales from the crypt but with a sc-ifi twist. It was pretty interesting but canceled after one season. The reruns aired on the sci-fi channel.
This was such a well-done video! I'm glad I found your channel. I recently discovered "Dark Matter," which aired on ScyFy from 2015-2017. It's such a great show! Then I found out they canceled it. I was genuinely excited that ScyFy was airing something good. It made me think about how, as a teenager in the mid-2000s, I used to love watching the old Sci-Fi channel. After school, I would watch Sliders and X-Files. Back then, I read a lot of science-fiction, so it was cool that they had decent programming on at the time. Why do good science- fiction shows always get canceled? What's the deal?? Anyway, I subscribed and I look forward to more of your videos!
I actually talk a little bit about why science fiction shows have such short runs in the video. Basically they're really expensive and thus have to out preform other shows. So it's always a gamble when a network starts producing a science fiction show.
The only show I watched on the Sci-Fi Channel was the original Star Trek TV show, back when they did the Sci-Fi Channel Special Edition in 1998, and I only watched it with William Shatner as the host. I liked the 90s era of the Sci-Fi Channel. Back when it was really the “Sci-Fi Channel”.
Same for me. I saw previews for this and thought it was a pretty big deal so recorded them all, 10 yrs later I dubbed them onto dvd. Still remember that “Spock Market” thing they did during the show?
@@patrickwilson1459 The Spock Market was something you could do while the show was airing. You started with a certain amount of “dollars”, don’t remember what they called the fake currency, but you bought shares of Kirk or Uhura etc... the price of each would fluctuate during the show. If it happened to be say Shatners birthday that day, his stock would sky rocket. A few years later the channel G4 did something similar with ST- TNG.
I'm still trying to find the weekday block marathons. Like Monster monday, thriller thursday, Weird wednesday. Sci-fi channel would play like 7 to 9 episodes on one particular show and those shows would have information bubble pop up during the episodes with information about a particular scene or episode. I really loved it when they did this for all the Kolchak the nightstalker episodes. Now I can't find them.
Idk if directed by Lynch but the commercial w/ a guy hauling seemingly heavier than usual black leaf bags to the front of his house w/ the captions DEAD.......LEAVES ? Sticks with me to this day so not all commercials were bizarrely forgettable.
7800 Productions: What happened to the third part (mentioned at the end of this video)? The part about the annihilation of the original Sc-Fi- Channel in the 2000's, along with it's rebirth as the Sifi Channel? Did you die of COVID before you could upload it?
I'm in the middle of editing it. 2020 killed my productivity for...obvious reasons. Then my editing hard drive died a few months ago as I was finishing the latest video. So I had to go back and start almost from scratch.
Can someone please tell me if the Syfy channel ever premiered studio Ghibli spirited away the reason I missed the old sci-fi channel is that was my first anime movie and I remember in 2008 watching it and being blown away.
I can't say for certain. If they showed Spirited Away it would have probably been a part of their mid-2000's "Ani-Monday" block. But even then, I'm not sure if it was the US premiere of it. It most likely would have been the "Basic Cable Premiere", since it probably would have aired on a pay channel like HBO of Showtime first. I'll look into it more for the next video though.
This was the golden age of the scifi channel. Now it's just a syfy channel that doesn't show scifi movies. All they show now is Harry Potter movies and movies that have nothing to do with scifi.
I cut it for time, and also because I didn't really have much to say about it other than just listing what cartoons they showed. Which is ironic, since most of this video is me just listing stuff that they showed.
