Lenticular animated gif meme commander cards would be an incredible finale for secret lair. The last card could literally be Fonzie jumping a shark.
Between the Spinosaurus/T-Rex weirdness, the flying Weeping Angels, and Ash not being legendary they've been really screwing up the flavor on secret lairs.
Not to mention that Polyraptor, a green card , is covered in blue colour in this version .
My theory on Ash is they didn't make him Legendary because Army of Darkness features a bunch of miniature copies of Ash, as well as Evil Ash. Kind of a stretch? Maybe.

I was also so thrown off by the switch up of the Spino and T-Rex. :( Also I think the Scorpius would have been a better choice for the Polyraptor.

Super easy to proxy them and nobody is gonna plain about them cause everybody has them.
I’m treating myself to that lair honestly. I love space and astronomy, and the art is stellar. Plus it’s Christmas soon. It may be terrible value-wise, but I don’t really care.

For a change, I'd want Wizards to collab with nature channels like Nat Geo or Discovery to make Secret Lairs instead of pop culture IPs. A lot of the most evocative cards are based on nature and having gorgeous wildlife and land art based on their imagery and style sounds intriguing. Imagine a Savannah Lions in mid pounce on a Nat Geo style cover, a Valakut depicting Mt. Vesuvius or a separate Shark Week Secret Lair. The possibilities are endless while staying consistent with MtG aesthetics.

Through the wormhole could have been a really cool 10 dollar "Commander essential" pack.
11:52 You know as well as these Secret Lairs having a false foil value, there is also the reverse case. When you get annoyed at a low overall value for the Secret Lair, but then the cards come out and they are worth a significant amount more. I'm talking about a $0.30 card that the Secret Lair version ends up being worth $5. I'd like to see you do a retrospective of some Secret Lairs and see if they ended up being worth the $30/$40 afterwards.

Very good idea! Would be cool to see a few examples and some analysis + ideas how to think moving on. In the end it's all guesswork but it can be better or worse guesswork

Egg tokens have been in foil for a while, atla palani was reprinted in a master set, they printed her egg tokens in it.
Really like that they did the Wormhole SL foils in Galaxy. Wish there were more unique foiling styles in secret lairs.
Just FYI on the Lara they did confirm it would get a Universes Within print in a set before 2025, but I think it was only mentioned on the EDHijinks preview ep afaik. Also the always sunny bit is golden, and these videos are awesome, keep it up Prof!
Appreciate the Doctor Who reference, that was from the 50th anniversary special where Tom Baker appears as The Curator, an unknown incarnation of The Doctor (presumably at the end of his/her/their lifespan, visiting a few old favourites).
I have a theory that there had been an intention to reprint Atla Palani with Lost Caverns, either in the set or a secret lair. The Huatli, Poet of Unity variant art very clearly used the original Atla Palani as a reference. I think they went as far as having the art commissioned before somebody shoehorned in the Jurassic Park stuff and didn't want to release a competing product at the same time.
The issue with this theory is that a few of these secret lairs have reprints either in special guest or in the commander precons. I do agree that Atla Palani should have been a special guest, they probably chose to not reprint her for whatever reason
Basic land secret lairs should really be at least 5 of each. So it's reasonable that one will show up every game if you play them.
Those snow lands are so pretty tho
My favorite secret lairs are ones where all the cards can go into the same deck, the Tiny bones and the goblins one from this summer were great, and with this release I'm a big fan of the Lara Croft.
Same with evil dead having Varina Lich Queen and the zombie creepshow ones, can go together.
I want more Secret Lair Drops like Through the Wormhole. Cards that I absolutely want to play with ridiculously cool art.
I like through the wormhole. Being able to take a full secret lair and put it all in one deck is awesome. I did it with the snakes one they did awhile back.
That through the wormhole SL needed one more valuable staple. A Prismatic Vista would have been great for the aesthetic, but a Reflecting Pool or City of Brass would have been good additions.

These basic land treatments are so good I’d happily pay $100 for $100 of them, but $6 a land is just robbery.
I have been wondering since 1995. Why not sell a 60 card pack with 12 of each basic land. A 75 card pack with 15 of each basic land. These should be sold cheap, and people will still buy new iterations of lands on future set releases.

I wish the land secret lairs came with a Land Station worth of cards. Or, at least, split into each type and have enough land for a monocolour deck worth in each. building a deck worth of them would be something I'd seriously consider with some of these but not at that price!!!

In case it's not clear, the reason monetary value is all over the place (and very often in WotC's favor once the dust settles) is because Secret Lairs aren't for players. Wizards is trying to tap the keg of Collector Whales which is why things are priced the way they are. 30-40 bucks for 5 basic lands should make this obvious.

I know it's been done before in past Secret Lairs and Judge Promos, but $40 for 5 basic lands is crazy!
Yeah the basic land drops are always the worst. Anytime I see a content creator "unboxing" them (meaning they actually bought the garbage and contributed to it) I roll my eyes

No clue. Only Secret Lair I've been interested in is the Mycosynthwave, only so I can grab Golem with a bonus Lattice for one of my decks.
@1krani yeah the only ones I buy are the ones that actually have cards that really REALLY appeal to me or are perfect for one of my EDH decks. But even then I would never buy the basic land sets. Like, I love the show Arcane, so I bought up the drop for that, but I STILL refused to buy the basic land set that was also part of the crossover. It's never worth it in my opinion for basic lands unless they make them like $10 at most for the foil version drop of them, and if they have 10 basics included, 2 of each
Through The Wormhole looks amazing to me. The price difference between 2 and 3 orders was around $12 so I grabbed a third. The art is so fantastic, I already know which decks I’m going to put them in. Plus the last round of SL Arcane Signets and Lightning Greaves fetch a decent price anyways, so that’s my money rationale
Those cards in Galaxy Foil will definitely be worth a lot, if not more than the drop

I actually love the Lara Croft Secret Lair. I understand that these are financial grades only, but the fact that it comes with Lara as the commander, and then provides 5 cards that fit her theme, card ability, and could definitely go in her EDH deck, is a very nice touch to me. It's why I bought the secret lair and will be making a Lara Croft deck (along with the fact I'm a fan of the game series).

Loved the art of cards and considered lara as a commander as im a fan of the games as well. Unfortunately I already have a treasure deck and other mechanic didn't really speak to me. I thought about getting it anyway, just to have but couldn't rationalize wasting the money.

I wonder how much of the false foil price is people over buying because they think it's going to stay high, and how much is that people... just don't like foils as much as they used to. They don't really feel special anymore and all they add is making your cards warp and sometimes hard to read from across the table.

Secret Lairs are one of those things I just have to admire from a distance, because I've just never been able to justify buying one. Now, if they ever did a MST3K set... then I'd be in trouble.

My husband got me the Gatewatch Baseball Secret Lair. I was so stoked because I had never gotten a Secret Lair and this was so fun. I ran into several problems: some of the text on the back was illegible, I couldn’t put it in our display binder because then they would need to be removed to read the back, and finally I don’t really want to play with them because they are hard to read and I would need to flip them whenever I cast them. I like those snow lands but can just wait for the secondary market. I also think my husband would like the Ixalan Secret Lair but that is definitely over priced.
Now I REALLY want a Joss Whedon Secret Lair. Or maybe just Firefly (Kaylee as a reskin of Lita the mechanical engineer, Mal, the Steadfast Leader)? No we have to include Buffy too (Spike as a Markov? Delilah as Olivia? Here, take my money.). And maybe Dollhouse versions of clones? As much as I would love a Dr horrible sing along blog version, I think they'd just make Bad Horse into Nightmare. Though there is an outside chance of Captain Hammer's Gauntlet of Power with absolutely amazing flavor text...
I agree with all of what you saod. The only one im treating myself too is the space one with the 5 staples. I love space and i love the art all them. I knew when i bought it the value isnt there but having that art is my gift to myself this year. Finally trying to play some magic so its the start of that jourey attempt.

Through the Wormhole (Galaxy Foil) should get its retroactive A+. Sol Ring is going for $48, Arcane Signet $28, Command Tower is $22. In 4 months if you bought it you doubled your money and then some.
This is something to consider in evaluating new Secret Lair's like Rovina Cai's that sold out in a day. People are thinking about Secret Lair printings the way people used to think about getting their pet staple cards altered by an artist. They're extra eye candy and bling for your EDH deck, and highly desirable. The Rovina Cai Secret Lair hasn't even come out and the whole package is selling for $140-$150 on TCGplayer, and I think most of that value comes from having staples like Arcane Signet and from its unique foil treatment. Archmage Inalla will end up being the cheapest card because she doesn't go nearly as many commander decks.
I think we can all agree, looking at previous Secret Lair Versions of Sol Ring, Greaves etc, that although the base version of those cards don’t have a high value, the Galaxy Foil SL Versions will definitely be worth a lot more than 10 Dollars. Blinged Versions of such Super Staples always guarantee to fetch high prices on the secondary market
Great analysis Brian. Yeah there is something to be said about being able to just buying a set of commander staples. You know what that seems like a great idea for am LGS. I am frustrated with the basic lands issue. My deck with snow covered lands has 28 snow covered mountains. But even in say my bird deck that say wants those lands with birds on them needs 3-5 of each basic.
I bet through the wormhole is going to have good value. Commander players like to bling out their decks and those cards will be pretty nice.
That's what I was thinking. I was looking at premium versions of those cards recently, and there are only a few foil printings of command tower that aren't in a standard frame, and all of them float around $10. And none of those have a galaxy foil treatment. All borderless foil sol rings are $10+ as well. The same is true for all 5 cards, so I'm not sure it's an apt comparison on the Profs part to say that a foil Command Tower is $1.02 and calling it a day.

@@talbotsolenberger4434 I agree. I have been saying something similar for a while now. It's just lazy at this point. Just look at my last comment a week or two ago about this through the wormhole lair. We are in the minority that see the problem and are basically shouting at clouds unfortunately.

The background is a secret lair arcane signet that is about $10. A helpful breakdown would be comparing them to past secret lair versions and prices, not the cheapest thing available.
It's something like looking at a beta birds of paradise and saying "Well, you can get one for $5." Not particularly helpful is it?
The actual expected value would be closer to 40 for the non foil and 70 for the foil. +/- 10. Based on comparing non foil to a box of rocks and foil to totally spaced out."

I purchased the foil Tomb Raider SL, I'm pretty excited and can't wait for it to arrive...even if I never play it in a game I'm pretty stoked as this is the 1st SL I've ever purchased.

I want a snow-coverd waste basic land. Also I remember pup up video. Basically music videos with facts not everyone knew about the artists. VH1 behind the music was great.
Something to note about the Through the Wormhole foil treatment: They have the Galaxy Foil treatment from Unfinity! So it'll be the first time these cards are given this particular foil treatment!
Also if you look at the other versions of Arcane Signet and Sol Ring that are secret lair they have all gone up in price not down.
For the past few drops they had a drop on sale for a couple of weeks that has been immediately replaced by a new drop, when it ended. The current drop ends on Dec 26. The perfect time to spend the money you may have gotten as a present on the new Secret Lair Drop. So there is a chance we will crack the 60 Lairs this year.

I hadn’t bought a secret lair in over a year but decided to order two from this drop. Ordered the ixalan showcase and “commander staple” ones, knew from the start I wasn’t getting the value back, but I actually really liked the art style for these, especially to replace commander art for my pirate deck! The secondary market value isn’t always the same as the worth to an individual.
I’ve never been interested but just recently built mono red krenko in commander and asked my gf for the goblins secret lair. And then went down the rabbit hole and found the shock land secret lairs and asked for the ones in my favorite colors. Ie. Grixis and jund.

Im sad i missed the frazier signets, i picked up the cute to brute deck, what a durdle-y dud. At least nicol and esika are valuable from the drop. Im looking forward to grabbing a calling all hydra sld, but out of all the drops this year, these are the only ones i even looked positively on.
I agree with the Lands. They need to just offer full play sets with the secret lair they would see increase in sales for it. Some might even buy two so they can fully customize their decks.

I won my first commander game using a Moonfolk--kind of like a Merefolk! The deck performed real well.
I agree with your take on the Secret Lairs. I like some of the reprints but it is hard to read the effects of these cards. I played such a card last night.
I'm still amazed/confused that nobody has suggested the OBVIOUS solution to the curling problem- WotC should foil BOTH sides of the card. When there's a double-sided card, with the foiling on both sides, they don't curl. It effectively solves the curling problem. So if they put foiling on both sides of every foil card, it would A) look really cool with the traditional 'Magic the Gathering' card back we all know in a holo foil, and B) and this cannot be stressed enough, IT SOLVES THE CURLING PROBLEM. I'll say that again, IT SOLVES. THE CURLING PROBLEM. Everyone should start pushing WotC to just foil both sides of literally every foil card, since they do it with double-sided cards anyway, and once again, (it cannot be stressed enough) it solves the curling problem. We CAN make demands of WotC that benefit both them AND us, people. We CAN do that.

The only secret lair that got me in this batch is the Space Themed Sol Ring/Signet/Greaves/Vessel/Tower. It's not value, but Galaxy Foil has an amazing feel. A must for my all foil Sharuum artefact deck.
Now I have to go Proxy Homer backing into the Bushes Teferi's Protection, thanks a lot!
