I can’t believe that no one picked “Jungleland”… holy cow!

      Agree
Jungleland isn't just Bruce Springsteen's best song, its the best song ever.

    My list:
    10. Living Proof - Never been married and never had kids. And it still gets me every time I hear it.
    9. Racing in the Street - Cinematic songwriting. My favorite song from one of his best albums.
    8. The Price You Pay - A song about consequences of some very big life decisions. Very weighty.
    7. Tougher Than the Rest - You never doubt whether he gets the girl at the end of this one. Such a heartfelt plea, and an effective one.
    6. Brilliant Disguise - I still remember the first time I heard this on the radio, the day it premiered.
    5. Backstreets - Another one that blew me away from the first listen.
    4. Incident on 57th Street - His best urban epic, which he was known for early in his career. It's even better than Jungleland, if you ask me.
    3. 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) - I had never been to the Jersey Shore before I heard this song. After I'd heard it, it felt like I had actually lived there.
    2. Born to Run - He intended to write one of the best rock songs when he took this on. He achieved it.
    1. Thunder Road - Best song I've ever heard. It cascades over you. That is all.

    10. Backstreets - This is one of the few songs of Bruce's that I didn't like right away and learned to love. The line "You can blame it all on me Terry, it don't matter to me now" may be the best sung line in Bruce's history.
    9. Independence Day - One of those songs that wasn't what I thought it was based on the title. Love the opening line of a son telling his father to go to bed.
    8. 4th of July Asbury Park - of all of my top 10 songs, this one is hardest to explain. I just love it, and sometimes that's all you need.
    7. Jungleland - Bruce at his most epic (maybe NYC serenade). One of my favorite 9+ minute songs.
    6. Badlands - just a powerhouse track.
    5. If I should Fall Behind - Glad Jason picked this. Respect: +50 after losing 100 yesterday for the "Bruce is phony" comment. Hauntingly beautiful.
    4. Thunder Road (Live) - I know it isn't a studio album but the first track and solo piano version of Thunder Road from 1986's Live 75-85 is stunning. The rest is of the box set was not so good. Well known individual concerts are a better listen.
    3. The River - I think his finest lyric. The line "Then I got Mary pregnant...and man that was all she wrote" No single line has ever hit me so hard as the first time I heard it. I thought I was listening to a a normal straight love song and then BAM! that line turns the song on its head.
    2. Thunder Road - What's not to love about this track? The piano especially is amazing.
    1. Born to Run - I first came across this song in a book of poetry and I found the lyrics fascinating. Amazingly it was years before I actually heard the song. (the world really sucked before the internet) And from the moment I heard it, it instantly became one of my favorite songs ever. Currently sits at my #2 song all time behind the Beatles "Hey Jude", and constantly threatens it to become #1.
Bruce isn't my favorite songwriter, but he is my favorite lyricist. He's not as innovative or poetic as Dylan, but at the same time I don't have to sometimes scratch my head and go "huh?"

Strong list. I have to push back on your comments regarding the "Live 1975 to 1985" boxed set. Having "a collection" of live performances from various shows was a gift. It seemed unique at the time. No one else was doing that (let alone putting out five (!) albums worth of live material). Not only that, but the versions of Sandy, Two Hearts, 10th Avenue Freeze Out and Jersey Girl are tremendous.

I only like no 9, 8, 5 and 3. Thunder Road and Born to Run are bombastic road weary anthems . Bruce does two to thee good songs per record but Nothing on Born to Run is good. Maybe the music to Backstreets? Rather hear The Fever or Rosalita or Atlantic City or Prove it all Night or One step back then any song on bloated Born to Run. Lonesome Day is a great song.

    • @oppothumbs1

For someone to write "You can blame it all on me Terry, it don't matter to me now" is the best line ever is not a good sign of someone's taste in lyrics.

@@oppothumbs1 Hey dumbass I said "sung line" meaning the way it is sung is the best not the words themselves.. Don't reply to me anymore, you offer nothing but vitriol and spite and in the end nothing of value.

Great discussion and lists guys. Mine is most like, at the top anyway, Joe's offerings. Also like Joe's my list is top-heavy with tunes from the early albums. So, here goes from best down:
    1. Thunder Road
    2. Born To Run
    3. Prove It All Night
    4. 4th Of July Asbury Park (Sandy)
    5. Brilliant Disguise
    6. Bobby Jean
    7. Incident On 57th Street
    8. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) - 7 and 8 have to be paired as on the album the piano outro from 57th Street merges seamlessly into the guitar and organ intro of Rosalita
    9. Racing In The Street
    10. Jungleland

    9. “Growin’ Up” (Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.)
    8. “Out in the Street” (The River)
    7. “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)” (The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle)
    6. “Candy’s Room” (Darkness on the Edge of Town)
    5. “Erie Canal” (The Seeger Sessions […a cover, I know, but still…!])
    4. “Born to Run” (Born to Run)
    3. “The Promised Land” (Darkness on the Edge of Town)
    2. “Atlantic City” (Nebraska)
    1. “Thunder Road” (Born to Run)

"Kitty's Back" showcases the greatness of the early E Street Band. For neophytes, find it on the second album. Also, "Iceman" is a non-album song that sounds a lot like "Racing In The Street" but definitely worth a listen.

    1. Backstreets

    3. Wish I Were Blind - "I wish i were blind, when i see you with your man". Been there, felt that.
    4. Racing In the Streets

    6. Downbound Train - about the only listenable track off "USA", about the only one that wasn't a single also
    7. Night - loved that it made one your 10's. Doesn't get the love that every other tune on BTR gets
    8. Moonlight Motel - I'm in the "bills and kids, kids and bills" stage of life
    9. I'll Work for Your Love - love the piano line
    10. Hearts of Stone - Southside sings it best, but give the man his due for penning it.

Edit: I added Backstreets. Growin' Up gets bumped. I have not heard many full albums by Bruce since 1990. I'm going with what I know.
I do have Lucky Town in Cassette. It's not bad. There are no songs from Born in the USA on my list. I think it's a great album but no top ten songs for me. There are others that I'd like to mention. I mean, I like Ramrod. It's cheesy as hell but in a good way. Thanks gentlemen!

    - When it comes to Springsteen songs it is worth mentioning that he gave some brilliant songs to other artists as well, e.g. Because the Night > Patti Smith, The Fever + Love on the Wrong Side of Town + Talk to Me > Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, almost half of the songs for the comeback albums On the Line + Dedication of his idol Gary US Bonds etc...
    - Another thing to say here is that Bruce is a very US American artist at times with a patriotic view on his country that gives him as well the right to put his fingers in specific wounds. While this is understandable it also means that some of his topics may be of lesser interest for people elsewhere in the world. I noticed this especially in the video yesterday when dealing with an album like The Rising.
    - I share my top 10 songs but I found I could do no ranking. Each of them is very dear and special to me and all of them have been part of my life ever since their release. Each one deserves to be number 1 on a given day.
    0. No Surrender ("we learned more from a 3 minute record than we ever learned in school")
    0. For You
    0. Atlantic City (The Band's version on Jericho is the highlight of that album)
    0. Blinded by the Light
    0. Darkness on the Edge of Town
    0. The River
    0. Candy's Room
    0. Growin' Up
    0. Outlaw Pete
    0. Thunder Road (when he started his career he was sometimes hailed as the new Dylan - later he released that Guthrie album. For me he is best when his New Jersey roots shine through and the music he really grew up with. It is that 60s R&B and soul that he copied from Gary US Bonds and that ties him so close to Steve Van Zandt and Clarence Clemons and that shows in the Phil Spector sound of Born to Run or other E Street albums.)

My song choices (based on my favs rather than what I think are his best) would be Because the Night, Lost in the Flood, Backstreets, The River and One Step Up. PS kudos to Jason for choosing Factory and Streets of Fire in his list - great tracks 👏

Always hard to rank a huge catalog if you want to judge the list based on all the records. I am quite familiar with Bruce Springsteen and have many of his records but some I haven't listened to enough. Here are a few songs I think deserves a mention:
    - The Ties That Bind
    - It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City
    - State Trooper
    - My City of Ruins
    - Surprise, Surprise
Talking about remakes I think the remakes of Bruce Springsteen done by Manfred Mann's Earth Band is well worth checking out!

While everyone obviously chose mostly good songs, the only thing I really agree with was Kramzer on Tougher than the Rest. Why was Born in the USA by far Bruce's biggest selling album by a very long shot? The answer: It had the best songs, almost absent from these lists. At least you guys left off songs from Human Touch on, though I did like Better Days on Lucky Town.

I agree that the official version isn't one of my favorite due to all of the reasons you guys mentioned, but this version shows how good of a song it really is. Some of my favorite Springsteen tracks are from unreleased sessions. He's definitely one of those artists who for whatever reason didn't always put his best songs or the best versions of songs on his albums.

When Born to Run was finally released, Springsteen knew that his life and career rested on the strength of the eight songs which, over the prior year and some months, he had poured every fibre of his being into. This sent him into a state of worry about the LP and he had seemingly convinced himself Born to Run was a piece of trash that nobody in their right mind would enjoy listening to.
“After it was finished? I hated it! I couldn’t stand to listen to it,” Springsteen would later admit. “I thought it was the worst piece of garbage I’d ever heard. I told Columbia I wouldn’t release it. I told ‘em I’d just go down to the Bottom Line gig and do all the new songs and make it a live album.”
So all of you who love the record I can understand the energy and the way it made Bruce the Boss but I really don't like it. I don't hate it, just not a record I would want to hear much.
