2019-2020 Toyota RAV4 FULL Size Spare | Will It Fit?

  • I've has a ton of emails come in lately about the RAV4 and my guess that a full-size spare might fit. So what did we do? We went out, bought a wheel, had a tire put on it, and jammed it in the cargo area to see if it fits.

Full size spares are becoming a thing of the past due to tires being more durable then they used to, more run flat tires being produced and auto manufactures doing their best to maximize fuel economy. 99% of people don't need a full size spare, which is why it makes sense for auto manufacturers not to include a full spare.
Keeping a tire gauge and portable 12V air pump is more valuable and comvinent IMO. 95% of the time it'll get you home or to a repair center. 1/2 of people can't/won't change a flat but adding air, anyone can do.

I have an 08 Rav 4 with the outboard spare tire. A LOT of people complained and moaned about that outboard tire, but it allowed my Rav 4 to have a FULL size spare tire. It also means that I have a spare matching rim, no steel wheel for the spare. I have always liked the look of the outboard spare. More Jeep like. 😀 😁

No way did people complain about that. The RAV4 had that outside tire until the 4th gen. It was made to be that crossover off road type vehicle. It completed the look. 3rd gen to me is best, besides the new adventure trim.

Most people are better served keeping a tire gauge and portable 12V air pump in their car. In the event of a flat you can air up the tire to get you home/repair shop.
Most urban dwellers if they get a flat are within 20 mins from home and can have someone bring out the spare in the unlikely event of a flat.

Drove a 2019 RAV4 in Panama. Their roads can be very bad in a lot of spots, and their paved ditches are wheel killers if you fall in while turning too sharply onto a perpendicular road-which is what happened. It had a full size spare thankfully, and we were able to change it. It wasn’t uncommon to see drivers pulled over and changing tires often due to flats from potholes.

It's so annoying that the Toyota dealerships play the "as it's not standard fitment, you can't have the wheel" card despite knowing it will fit. Apparently, in the UK, in order to meet emissions ratings, the additional weight of the tyre was unacceptable. So, UK Plug-in hybrid PHEVS (same as a Prime) are supplied with just the air pump and tub of gunge, which is as useless as a chocolate tea-pot when you've split your tyre. Luckily a do-nut does fit, although the wheel recess does need the shim at the back to avoid the frontmost part of the tyre pointing upwards and stopping the load floor from laying flat. We also don't have the double floor level options for these reasons.

For compact cars the compact (donut) spare is an acceptable alternative to a full size spare, but the inflation kit is just a bad joke. For full size cars and SUV/CUV a full size spare is the better solution, especially if you tow something. Tires are better than they have ever been, but tire damage and flats do happen. Good video Alex. If you get a flat on your RAV4 be sure to video the experience. Now days many people have no experience or knowledge on how to change a tire. In the past it was obvious you had a spare tire in your trunk......now with the spare and jack hidden many people have never even see the spare or may not know where the jack is located.

its not about a payload, its because fuel consumption claims. i wont buy any car without a full size spare, which drastically reduce the market for me.
nice video, thanks. i would like to see something simillar more often, but i know its not that easy. i think that most of the japan brands + kia and hyundai still offer a full size spare from factory as standard. i wish volvo would do the same, but the only chance to have a full size spare is xc40, and im not sure about that. i think there is enough height for it, but probably not enough diameter for a full size.

    • @kenc2257
      @kenc2257 5 років тому

Why (the market reduction)?! If a full-sized spare is that important to you, shouldn't you buy the car/vehicle you WANT to drive, and then just buy another another wheel/tire? Then, you'll be just living with the trade-offs: a bit of extra cost, and the reduced cargo capacity from storing a full-sized spare. But, at least you'll be driving the vehicle that you want to drive.

The Trail version, and maybe the limited, have 19” wheels and if you run a tire calculator and Plug in the stock 19 and 17 sizes, has a slightly larger diameter than the rav with the 17” wheel and tire. Will the trail version, which we are looking at for the towing capacity, also take a full size spare so you think Alex?

That is very nice to know as I am still 'Looking' at which RAV4 model I want to get.
To have a Full Sized Spare is needed in ALL vehicles. I usually get a flat when I am miles away from home or from my local repair facility.
And do I change out my own tires anymore....NOPE. That is what AAA Gold is for. LOL

Hi Alex, thank you for the video! I'm curious (as I'm very interested in this car), how is the wind noise while driving at speeds 70mph+? When I test drove the car I found it to be a bit noisy and have read it as a common complaint online. The road noise didn't bother me, so I'm not concerned about that, just the wind noise.

Good question, but since the wheel he bought was from a new RAV4, it should have the TPMS sending unit, but I don't think they function until the wheel & tire is spinning on the vehicle. It would be nice if Alex answers this question. 🤔

Looking at other markets doesn't always give you an accurate guide. NA Outbacks can't take a full size spare even though Outbacks in the rest of the world can. NA models have a bigger gas tank and smaller spare wheel well.

Last flat tire I had was about 5 years ago...heard a hissing noise while I was at the gas station pump, filling up. I had picked up a screw. Drove 50 yards over to the full-service repair shop (so, I never had to use the spare tire). That was my first flat in, maybe, 25 years--"knock on wood." Drove for 3 years in the Philippines, and also drove for 3 years in Panama (Central America)--never had flat tires there, either.

rav4 in Australia are also sold with a space saver tyre, like you i was also told that they do not support a full size tyre & rim, I was also told it would not fit in the boot, I proved them wrong. It is ridicules for car manufactures selling vehicles in Australia with space savers, this maybe ok in suburbia, but once leaving the metro area there are vast distances in between towns. I think toyota should re think this & go back to supplying or at least give you the option of having a full size spare.

Had a flat tyre, also have a spare tyre but not full size, since I’ll be travelling for 120miles in mostly motorway I will be restricted with my speed to 50mph. So I called for breakdown help, they don’t have a full size tyre to replace rather they will only repair it however on the receipt it warns you not to run more than 50mph. I end up going to a tyre shop to buy and replaced with new full size tyre. Spare tyre or repair kit does not really help when you travel on the motorway.

I had a 2001 BMW E46 with the full size spare tire and rim. Definitely a workout getting it out of the trunk, but a lifesaver in those difficult situations. Now BMW has those flat tire kits to save space. A flat tire kit will never give you the same peace of mind as having an actual full size spare tire.

Remove the rubber spacer at the front of the wheel well and the tyre should low enough for the floor to be flat. The cars are designed for a full size spare for markets where space savers are deadly. Spacers are used to lift the doughnut to the same height as a proper tyre. There is no logic in spacer savers. The makers say it is to do with weight, so the whole car is dangerous if you put groceries in the trunk? Pull the other one, it has bells. I'm in Australia and the two punctures I have had in the past 10 years were over 100 miles from home on patched and broken rural roads. No repair shop open the first time because it was Sunday. Second time the tyre was too damaged to repair and nearest town doid not have that size. There is still a good range of cars sold in Australia with proper spare tyres. Subaru generally have them but its new hybrid Forester has no spare at all. Don't go more than walking distance from home in one of them!

    Good job, Alex.
Since the tire is flipped over, I added a valve stem extension on to it, so I did not have to take the tire out to test it or add air. They do go flat, so I check mine when I check the running tire pressures.
Unlike GM, toyota does not give you individual tire pressure readings. Too bad. I find it a big safety feature.
I have added full size tires to my vehicles when possible. WILL NOT BUY a vehicle that does not have some sort of spare tire.
The inflation kit they provide on some models, are dangerous and about worthless, to say the least.
Some tire shops will not work on a tire that has that tire inflation junk sprayed inside of it.

Compact spares should be illegal unless you have offset tires. If you have a full time AWD (Subaru) you could possibly do some real damage to your differential and drive gear parts. Some of us actually have to do lots of driving . I carry a full size spare in my Outback. Its crap that it takes half of my trunk space.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide

Most modern AWD systems, Subaru included will run fine on a compact spare. The older Subaru systems with a torsen center diff would see increased heat and fluid temps, but the current clutch based systems are fine.

I’m thinking of doing the opposite with my CT200h and delete the spare donut. Instead I’ll put a portable inflator and tire repair patch kit. What do you think? Would you delete a spare? A smaller fuel efficiency oriented car would likely be better off losing a nice chunk of weight. Of course the drawback is you don’t have a spare. But honestly I’ve never had a flat tire in 20 years.

    • @kenc2257
      @kenc2257 5 років тому

I also haven't had a flat in decades... Really, it would depend on your circumstances, right? I live in an suburban area, almost never carry passengers and never tow, never go off-road, have Roadside Assistance close and on my cell-phone's contact list--a temporary spare is fine for my situation. I also have a bit of "Inflator Kit" anxiety [as in, "will it work?!"], so that's not for me (even though Roadside Assistance, or even a tow, is close by].
Unless you move to a rural area, and/or start driving on rough roads/go off-road, or start towing, I would think that an Inflator Kit might be fine for you. To backup an Inflator Kit, I'd have (and be familiar with) a good-quality Roadside Assistance service, and have that number on my cell phone. Now, if you routinely/frequently take long road trips, particularly to different destinations, then I'd lean toward keeping the temporary spare, even if you had Roadside Assistance. But, really...it depends.
